I first saw these speakers on the logitech website and decided it was time for an upgrade to my sound system. So I went to a local shop where these were displayed, I plugged my I-Pod in and put some techno on, all I can say is wow! The speakers sound very clean, the midrange sings, the treble is tinny, but in a good way. The subwoofer..wow..every time the bass hit it was like the entire display stand for the speakers was shaking. I could not believe what I was hearing out of these. Then I got ready to cringe for I thought these were going to be in the excess range of 400 dollars. I looked at the price...149.99....I gasped at how cheap they were! These speakers are absolutely stunning at the price range that is offered. I Then took them home and hooked them up, which this took less than 5 minutes. The package is very sturdy and has no parts where the system is unprotected. I hooked them up through my headphone jack on my receiver and could not believe it! The neighbors were just as surprised as I was! I played the first level of halo 3 and the Z-2300 brought it to life! Puts the stock speakers on my television to shame! If you are thinking about buying them for music, games, multimedia, and anything you need good sound reproduction out of at less than 200 dollars, these cannot, will not and cant be beat at this price range. GREAT JOB LOGITECH!

I was very excited to finally own the Z-2300 system, which seems to be far and away the best reviewed set of 2.1 computer speakers still available. I guess having such high expectations can't ever be a good thing when it comes to home audio. These speakers sound very good overall, with solid bass and pretty good midrange and highs. The low end was not nearly as impressive as many reviewers claim though. I guess if you are sitting 2 feet away from the sub at a computer desk, then the bass would probably sound more consuming. In my living room the Logitech 8" sub sounded less impressive than a 10 year old Boston Acoustics 7" subwoofer, even when cornered. The 2 small speakers are also very directional and they are angled upwards, which makes placement anywhere but on a low computer desk kind of difficult. I compared this Z-2300 system directly to the old Bose Companion 3 series 1 set I have had in my living room for years......and the Bose won in every aspect. The Bose sounded richer and fuller with music than the Logitech, and on movies had crisper dialogue and highs. The Logitech can get very loud without much distortion, as can the Bose, but I would never use either anywhere near their maximum outputs. The Logitech was a strong performer for music and movies, but I still cannot believe cnet and others rate these speakers as highly as they do. If you can get them for one hundred bucks or under, they are a solid deal. At more than that, you could probably get some great used home audio components that sound much better.

The overall quality of this product was the reason I returned the Logitech Z-2300 set after just a day of use. The subwoofer enclosure was covered in some sort of sticky substance right out of the plastic wrap and packaging from Logitech. It was stained on all the black panels and looks terrible. Trying to remove it only made the discoloration worse. Clearly just a defect from the Logitech packaging or manufacturing process. Next, all the components have a cheap plastic feel, almost like a really cheap home theater in a box system does. The sub is weighty, but enclosure feels junky and does not have a nice finish by any means. Secondly, the sub periodically cut out and shut off by itself during light use. It was not pushed at all or cranked up, and suddenly would shut off or would not turn back on right away. I unplugged and plugged back in and tried again. The fuses seemed fine as well, but the bass unit would either not readily turn back on or would shut off during light use again and again. After this occurred 3-4 times, I knew it was going back to Amazon. I considered a replacement, but the quality of this product is just not at the level I need for it to be used as a small home theater setup in my living room. The original Bose companion 3 setup I have had for over 5 years is still working great, so I guess I should not have messed with a great thing. The Logitech speakers are very good sounding speakers at a decent price point, but low quality components and build quality were the main downfall for me. I would love to see a newer version of this set (Z-2400 ?) in the near future with better build quality, better 2 way speakers, longer speaker cords, and an updated subwoofer. Then I might consider taking another chance on this set. By the way, I have a set of Logitech Z-523 speakers in my office hooked up to my computer and really enjoy them. They have proved much more reliable thus far than the Z-2300 set did and are a great value at under sixty dollars shipped.

It's truly amazing how well this speaker sounds. I have the Kilpsch ProMedia 2.1 and at first I thought this was best sounding system but then I gave the ProMedia to my wife and decied to try this system for Logi. Well..let me tell you this system is the one. If there is anything negative to say...it might have too much bass!!. I really like the ability to power of the system form the control puck where as with the Kilpsch I had to either leave it on...which I did (for over 4 years) or use the switch on the back of the sub. Another plus was this system from Logi was cheaper than the Kilpsch.

after trying out several other systems including creative labs gigaworks t3, bose companion 3 (both $250.00 price tag and don't even come close to this one) also tried the altec lancing MX6021 Expressionist Ultra and a couple of others i still wasn't satisfied with any of their performances bass distortion was my number one issue with all the systems i had bought tryed and then returned i had lost hope in finding a system that would meet all my expectations but after doing more research and reading tons of reviews for the logi z-2300 and btw i have never seen that extreme amount of rewiews on any product out there and most of them possitive except for the few ridiculous negative rewiews about no mids or highs wich btw isn't true at all !! someone needs to educate those people on equalization ! come on a few simple adjustments and ur done!!
bass is clean loud and undistored in other words perfect it gives u more than u'll eva need!
as far as mids and highs u get the best performance and sound by adjusting ur equalizer settings after some tweaking u'll find the sweetspot and believe me u'll be trilled !
having a sound card is a plus since they have a user interface that includes graphic equalizer and other sound effect settings.
honestly this system is by far the best 2.1 computer system i've ever heard with out a doubt! it's even better than alot off 5.1 systems outhere exept for example the logitech z-5500 5.1 wich i almost purchased instead of this one but i didn't have desk space for the extra speakers... the z-2300 2.1 was more than enough for me. i recommend the z-5500 if u r looking for a 5.1 system.

if u r looking for top sounding 2.1 system with outstanding performance, clean loud undistored bass ... this is ur best choice with out a doubt i asure u that u wont be dissapointed on the other hand this system will excede ur expectations!!

Compact product with huge, crystal clear sound.

I do wish the on/off switch was on the desktop speaker instead of on the sub-woofer, but that is trivial.

I absolutely recommend these speakers.

My "stereo" system consists of a Netbook, an external hard drive containing my CD collection, and until now, tinny little laptop travel speakers. I have very little room and even less money for sound equipment right now. So I am thrilled with the big sound coming from these small speakers. It fills up my studio apartment nicely.

I do wish there were some way to control the bass volume--it's a little too reverberant for a small apartment with common walls. (I suspect the heavy bass masks thinner sound quality in other ranges, but I'm not that much of an audiophile, and can't afford to be picky.) I have swaddled the subwoofer with acoustic matting and will figure out some way to isolate it even better, and will keep the volume low at night. Be aware that this subwoofer could drive your neighbors up the walls, and no one deserves that.

When I first ordered the Altec Speakers I was attracted by the beautiful design and the promise made on the box of excellently balanced and clear sound. After receiving them I am not disappointed in the least. The speakers and base are very crisp and clean. The size is just right for a computer desk and the Tone knob on the speaker allows you to easily adjust the base to treble ratio.

These are by far the most quality speakers I've seen for this price. I highly recommend them.

With the subwoofer the sound is surprisingly full for computer speakers...good bass. If I had any complaint, it would be that the tweeters can be a bit sharp, and if you turn down the tone, you get more bass. Definitely worth the money, though.

I'm not normally the kind of person to be fussy about a set of speakers. I've used lots of different sets over the years, and I've never found a set I didn't like... until now.

For music, this speaker system is perfectly adequate. Streaming music via Pandora sounded every bit as good as I expected from the glowing reviews. Gaming? Great! I didn't notice any problems at all.

The sticking point was video. Especially at higher volumes but noticeable even at low volume, there was audible distortion when trying to make out human voices. This was especially bad when watching streaming video or standard definition video files. Voices sounded hollow and were difficult to understand; take a few steps away from the PC, and the problem got even worse.

Unfortunately, as someone who uses my computer as a TV on a regular basis, this didn't work for me. I'm shipping them back to Amazon and trying a different set.

The new Logitech S-220 Speaker System contains several upgrades to its predecessor, the S-200 Speaker System. Unlike the S-200, the new S-220 encompasses increased usability with a newly styled control base to manage improved acoustics, volume and VoIP connectivity. Bass tuning by the end user is often permanent once a setting is established. Pros: Sound Quality, Price, Sleek Design, Headphone Jack which is really nice since the one on my computer is almost impossible to reach. I've accidentally dropped and knocked the speakers over as well as banged one into the wall a few times and none of that affected their performance or the way they look.

Cons: The built in Volume Control wheel works great Except when you plug-in headphones, then you have to adjust the volume through your computer directly. Extra features = extra cords to get in the way.

Other Information: I bought this speaker system on July 18, 2009. I would recommend them to others and would buy them again in the future if I damaged them through my clumsiness.

After I was thoroughly tired of the horrible buzzing/static like noise the speakers my husband had hooked up to the computer for Forever; I started looking for speakers. Had I known I could find such good quality speakers for such a great price I would have started looking sooner. I thought I would have to pay at least $100 for decent computer speakers, so imagine my surprise when I found this well reviewed speaker system on Amazon for less then $30.

These aren't going to give you the same sound quality as more sophisticated (and generally more expensive) speaker systems, but they are More then sufficient for watching music videos, TV shows, and listening to music with good sound quality on my computer. When I want Great sound quality for my music then I listen to it on my home stereo system, but my stereo doesn't play YouTube videos. ^_^

The sound is absolutely incredible! I connected it to my Mac and then my ipod and both fill up my entire house with no diminish in quality despite the speakers and subwoofer being tiny. The downside is that there are just too many wires. When I opened the package I was concerned because there are two 3.5mm jacks. I have 5.1 logitech speakers but they require three ports into the computer and my new Mac just has one headphone jack. After testing the speakers and reading the manual I discovered that the 2nd 3.5mm jack is for the microphone functionality of it. I guess it's nice if you use mics but otherwise it's just another loose plug. The speakers look decent, not great. In fact they even look and feel a little cheap, which is partly why I was so impressed by the sound. Anyway, I still give these speakers a 5 out of 5 because the most important thing is sound, which it does amazingly.

There are lots of good reviews for these speakers. I think that may have caused me to expect too much. These speakers are definitely better than standard desktop speakers. But the sub-woofer simply does not have enough power to balance out the highs coming from the satellites. As another reviewer indicated, there are absolutely no mid-range frequencies.

Even still, these speakers deserve a 3.5 star rating because the sound quality is decent enough, considering the price.

it is awesome!!! the wires arent very long but for me it was a big deal. for such a cheat price compare to the other speakers i wasnt expecting much but it is very good!!! i was worried at first but it is compatible with a laptop. and even an iphone!!! that was what i was most worried about bcuz at first i couldnt decide if should get speakers for my laptop or my iphone but i choose my laptop. i got the 2 for the price of one! but yea its really good. i would recommend this to anyone!!! to all of you speakers finders out there you should def check this one out!

Save ur money on this set,if like like a lot of bass,or loud music period,speakers break up at 4 on the volume dial,i liked the remote but thats all,,exchanged for z-2300 with 8 inch sub,they are amazing clear as a bell at volume 10!

One channel of audio is very low, almost imperceptible, the other is very hot. Returned the item. But I also think the build quality is pretty poor and the sound quality is fair or below average at best. I have tiny Dell speakers that sound as good. I guess I'll have to go with Bose because even though several reviewers loved this set, I found them to be sub-par and not worth the money.

Great product for the price! Plenty of power in case you want to crank it up a bit... just got to watch the sub-woofer level b/c it will distort with the higher volume if set too high but other than that... couldn't be more pleased!

Suggestion..... if you buy this product, but some extra RCA type wires because the speaker wires only have maybe 3ft of length- it will save you alot of headaches trying to place the speakers where you want them.

Decent quality Speakers. Bass is too strong (I can adjust) for 2 small speakers. Midrange is ok.. This is one area, where you miss the detail.
Speakers don't have protective grils. If you have kids, sone thing to worry about..

This is the third pair of these speakers I've bought ... which should be all I need to say, no? To be sure, there are higher end speakers available but for size, price, quality and ease of use it's hard to imagine a better deal than these. They make a huge difference in the audio quality of smaller flat screen TVs. As a bonus, I really like the extra RCA jacks and supplied cable so I can easily plug my iPhone in and listen to radio, podcasts, etc. Takes 5 minutes from box opening to using.

I have to admit I know close to nothing about speakers, but music is very important to me, and I bought these speakers and am pretty disappointed in them. Unless I'm missing something there is no way to control the bass/treble output and there is WAY too much bass. I don't think they sound that good sitting at the computer or across the room. I didn't want to spend that much money on computer speakers, but I do play most of my music off my computer now and thought this would be a good compromise. I have the Bose small in ear headphones and think they're amazing, and figured these would be along the same lines. We often now unplug the speakers from the computer and just use the computer speakers because the sound just does not sound right, no matter how we try to control it in iTunes. The other thing I really don't like about them is that there is no way to turn them on or off so they stay on all the time and there is always a constant buzz. Very disappointed.

Having been someone that has been in the home theater business for at least 5 years..I know my speakers, I also know that when it comes to home theatre...there are far better speakers than BOSE....HOWEVER. I have always had a passion for the quality of speakers that I choose when it comes to music. I needed a pair of new computer speakers. I was ready to upgrade. So I did my research as I do with everything else. I really like the Altec Lansing speakers that I owned when I had my dell, they lasted 10 years. Anyhow...I almost didn't purchase these...but I am so glad that I did. They sound AMAZING!!! especially with classical, New age, Jazz, Blues and world music~they rock for the price, and well worth it! Anyhow, their great little speakers for the money. You won't be disappointed. These are NOT my main speakers, they are used primarily for listening to music when I am at the computer.

With electronic dance music such as SWV's remix of Michael Jackson's "Human Nature," a variety of tracks by Kaskade, and Madonna's "Jump," (both studio and concert versions), the Bose Companion 2 Series II speakers wander between treble and bass settings. The sound also repeatedly cuts out for a moment. I switched to the second audio input channel, with the same results.

I have tested this with different sources (CD, MP3, AAC, online streaming), using different software players and by comparing the Bose speakers and two different sets of USB speakers. The problem is either with the Bose speakers or with my audio Line Out jack. I will try to track down some other speakers that use Line Out. Until then, I believe these speakers are sturdy and look great, but given my own experience and others' complaints of various bugs, I fear Bose has surrendered to shoddy manufacturing in pursuit of low price.

When i saw this system advertized i figured it was just another cheep speaker system. Well i ordered it and expected to return it but the sound was unbelieveable. Granted, this is not the best system out there but for those who just want a serious upgrade to there mundane sound and all for $29.00, this is the system for you. The woffer really works and does not distort. In conclusion try this system for yourself and see. Bet you keep it.

I purchased these because my older (Altec Lansing 2.1) speakers finally shorted out. Those Altecs were AMAZING, loud, clear, well defined. I had to go "cheap" so I chose these Creative speakers (since I have a Creative Audigy Platinum ex soundcard, thought they'd be at least a good pairing.
These speakers on a totally flat EQ setting-"NAKED") are TOO bassy, the highs are thin, papery even, and the mids are VERY lacking.
To coax a good sound out of them took some tweaking in the advanced mixer/volume settings where I had to cut the bass and trebble some (not all sound cards will allow this adjustment, so if yours doesn't, you're outta luck. To check, right click your volume control, click "Advanced" and see if the bass/trebble sliders are active).
My Altec Lansing 's had bass and trebble knobs, AND there were midrange speakers incorperated into the base of the tweeters as well. These only have volume knob and VERY small tweeters (and the subwoofer) and thats JUST what they sound like, all high and low. (They do sound a bit better at a distance of say ten feet or more)
At lower volumes they are okay, but the more you turn them up, the more they distort- even with the computer's internal volumes turned down quite a bit as to not overdrive the speakers.
EVENTUALLY I found a reasonable setting so they didn't sound terrible, but that's pretty sad.
THERE IS A NEW VERSION OF THESE SPEAKERS COMING OUT SOON (same name, different look), they may have improved them, I don't know.

I didn't put 1 star so you wouldn't assume this is one of those ridiculous rants. But my recommendation: DO NOT BUY.

Several other reviewers noted this and I have to agree: it sends too much power to the subwoofer. If you're thinking "oh cool, I really like to feel the bass" hold on a second. The problem is it overloads the subwoofer circuit. Put on music with strong bass and the thing crackles and pops and sounds really awful. The only way to fix it is to use some sort of EQ software, like the equalizer in iTunes, and cut out so much bass that it defeats the purpose of having a good strong subwoofer. The other problem with this solution is that it only applies to music being played through iTunes.
There are fixes like software that runs in the background on your soundcard or if you have an expensive soundcard it may come with controls that let you tailor the EQ for all output from the sound card. But, again, that defeats the whole reason for having the unit.

I really WANTED to like these speakers. They have a very nice sound -- the highs are crisp and not shrill or tinny, midrange frequencies are full and punchy, and the bass would thump nicely if it wasn't constantly distorting.

This is somewhat revealing ... you can go to the Creative Labs website, look up the unit, and find a troubleshooter FAQ that includes "the bass distorts." I got in touch with their customer service via email. They have been very responsive and are ready to issue an RMA to return the unit to them for repair/replace. But how much work am I going to put into a set of speakers that cost $30? Get a copy of my receipt (which they require), pack them up, pay $15-20 dollars to ship them, etc., you get the idea.

I'm actually thinking of selling them at a garage sale and buying the Eagle Tech ET-AR504LR-BK 2.1 speakers, which are well reviewed and about $20 more.

So, in summary: not recommended.

This system is excellent!!! At first it is a little hard to setup and understand. By reading some reviews and tips you get it going and the final result is REALLY great!!! This system is powerful enough to drive your neighbor crazy! The sub is awesome and the quality of the sound is amazing. I am a professional musician and audio quality to me is very important. You can't go wrong with this system. I purchased other cables to install the way I wanted but it was worth it!!!

This is a nice little speaker set for the price. I was updating my surround sound system and purchased these to go along with an Onkyo receiver. I'm very happy with the results. They produce crisp, clean sound and are aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I enjoy playing video games, and realistic, immersive sound is a big part of the experience. I feel like I achieved that with the help of these speakers. I haven't compared them to any high-end speakers, but I can't imagine gettng significantly better results even if I spent 3-4 times as much. Bottom line, I'd definitely recommend this product.

great speakers!!, i set it up in condo and its plenty loud for that application if your want to setup a dedicated hometheater room i would suggest spending more.

I think is great for any condo/appartment due to is very small size and good sound quality, i have also set up a hometheater using klipsch and jbl studio series speaker which cost over $3000 for spekers alone, and i can tell you that this is the best setup for the money

After spending weeks looking for a good middle of the road quality speaker system I finally found this gem and I am pleased with the results. This was the last piece to my home theater setup and for the price, the quality just can't be beat. I bought this to be used with my Onkyo RC160 receiver and the two go together nicely.

Once of the things I am pleased about is the great quality of sound for the small size of these things. They are literally about the size of pc speakers but deliver such clear sound. The L/R Channel in both the front and rear are the same size and deliver great highs and good medium range sound and the Sub takes care of the lows.

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is the center channel. The center channel itself delivers great quality sound but the volume isn't quite there. I had to turn up the dB's on the center channel via my receiver to balance it out so it worked out in the end. Othewise I would find myself reaching for the remote during dialogue rich scenes to turn it up.

I have seen a few reviews with people who aren't happy with the subwoofer but my experience has been pleasant. The lows come through clean and have a great tone. It sounds great during action movies with lots of explosions as well as listening to your favorite cd or radio station. The sub itself has its own on/off switch that I just leave on as well as its own power adjustment. I keep mine set at about 45% because anything higher and everything in the house starts shaking.

The bottom line here: For the price this just can't be beat. Yes there are other setups that will deliver a better experience for some but will cost you much more money. At this price point you will not find a better setup for your home theater and unless you are a complete audiophile you will be completely satisfied.

What baseline stock speakers should be. I wanted to replace all my factory speakers without spending a ton of money. I used to be somewhat of an audiophile so $23 a pair speakers worried me, but I was pleasantly surprised. They are sized for factory replacements as well.

These speakers are way better then my old ones that where stock. the front of my stock speakers where 14w i was like wow i really did upgrade. Then i went to my back speakers and when i got the stock ones out an they where only 8w i was like how can they do that. so when i was finished putting these in i was blown away on how great they are they are better then my sony speakers in my other car. i may get some more pyle speakers at this price.

Picked these up half-off on Amazon 2 weeks ago. Having installed polk DB series in all my past cars I am usually very picky. Being on a very tight budget and needing to replace my speakers quick I picked these up and WOW i have to say for 11 dollar speakers they are VERY good. Running of a Sony headunit they are way way better than I have expected.

360-watt???? I call BS on that claim but with 35 watts a channel through them (4 installed) they kick really good and have OK bass. (Nothing CLOSE to a subwoofer but just enough if loud enoguh to shake my rearview a bit and shake my side mirrors).

Will buy again and again. About 75% as good as my old Polk DB series for a FRACTION of a FRACTION of the cost. $110vs$11!!!! That is a a HUGGGEE Difference.

Just installed a pair of these Pyle speakers and a pair of Infinity 612 speakers in our boat this week. I bought these "cheap" speakers with thoughts of replacing them with the more expensive Infinity speakers when I had the money. Well that won't be happening... These Pyle speakers out play the infinity's by probably double! If anything gets replaced, it will be the Infinity's.
You will not be disapointed with these speakers!!!

I didn't have any speakers for my desktop computer. I dont have a TV at the moment and wanted speakers so that I could watch netflix. While the quality from the speakers is good the sound is not very loud. I can barely hear the sound if my a/c is running and have to move the speakers pretty close to where I am sitting. If I were just using these speakers on my laptop while studying they would be idea; although not super portable.
I will keep these speakers as backup for my laptop but I am currently looking for another set to use with my desktop computer.

I purchased the Altec Lansing BXR1220s to replace the tinny, rear-firing speakers on an Insignia 22" HDTV. They do an admirable job - hardly room-filling sound that would drive us out of the kitchen, but nevertheless wider-ranging and much more "listenable" than the set's built-ins. They look nice sitting on the countertop on either side of the screen, and I was able to plug the power cord into a spare USB slot on the back of our cable box. You might want to put a small piece of black electrician's tape on the power LED if you have the speakers facing you at eye level. For the price, highly recommended.

I have been using these speakers for over a year now on my Acer Laptop - the sound quality is superb -- I cannot imagine Pandora without them - and they are super convenient too - just plug them into your audio and USB ports and like magic, they work flawlessly - no external power supply needed. I actually prefer these speakers over my expensive stereo system - now that's really something!

Got this two weeks ago. Didn't expect much for the price, but I did expect for it to at least turn on. The power knob is clearly broken. I've sent two emails to Altec-Lansing's customer service about an exchange, but have not have any reply. I needed cheap speakers for my secondary system, and fast. So, I ended up going retail. I'll try to get my money back, but I'm not optimistic, and I'll add this company's products to my "do not ever buy" list.

If you buy, pray that it works out of the box.

I read the reviews and followed thru and bought these speakers and was not disappointed! great sound great volume. the speakers on my laptop are very poor i had to practically put my ear to the computer to know what was said. so i used earplugs which are okay but not convienent when u need to move around. within 2 minutes of recieving and opening these speakers were up and going and i could not be happier and all for the low price of less than $10.

The sound quality is not the best, but I set these up on the family computer so it didn't need to sound great, it just needed to have sound. They are nice and heavy, with volume control knob and power button on the front, so they can be turned off and on fast to save power.
These speakers have an external power supply, so I wouldn't recommend them for a laptop user, I also wouldn't recommend these for a power user, as the sound is not the best in the world, but they are perfect for someone who is just looking to get some kind of sound output for their computer.

I purchased this so my middle son could watch movies on his computer. Not having experience with sub-woofers, I wasn't ready for the rumble that can be heard throughout the house. Of course, my kids think this is "way cool."

What we all love is the clarity of the sound. My only advice is to check the connections in the back of your computer before the purchase. We had to upgrade (if that's the correct term) the computer first. Since this is my oldest son's field of experience, it wasn't a big deal.

We've had the set up for about three months now and there isn't one negative thing I can say about it. I love Logitech products, so it's not a shocker for me to be thoroughly satisfied with the purchase.

These speakers are color coded so you can't make a mistake whe attaching the cords to the speakers. The colors did't match those on the back of my computer but if you check the software that came with the soundcard or the paperwork, you shouldn't have much trouble figuring it out.
The sound is great. I use the system to play games, to listen to music and to play movies and the speakers give off phenomonal sound. You won't find a better bargain than these for under $100.

I have owned logitech speakers for many years now and they continue to blow me away. I have had my current set five years now and it still has amazing quality sounds and this set is just as awesome. I have seen many other sets much more expensive that do not come close. I can also easily switch use between my laptop, desktop, and tv pretty easily. I have them pretty loud at times (it's awesome during action movies, it sounds like somethings exploding right behind me. I can even feel the sound vibrations) and never have to worry about them "blowing out." Don't let the cheap price fool you, it will definately out perform your expectations.

Getting a new laptop some time ago with Vista Home Premium is one of my nearly daily regrets. Vista is so finicky, so user-unfriendly and nearly adverse to any additions (software or hardware) we have attempted to add.

I was heartened to receive these speakers, noting it said "Vista compatible" on the box. We have a 17" Acer laptop that we were hoping to watch movies on at times, however the existing laptop speakers were totally unacceptable as far as any volume when playing any DVDs.

These however have made life wonderful! The sound is very decent (especially considering I paid less than $11 for them which included Free SuperSaver Shipping). I plugged them into a USB port and up popped a little window in the bottom right-hand section of the computer screen saying the system was installing them. Fifteen seconds later, the box indicated they had been installed successfully.

Upon inserting a movie DVD, the sound was not that loud at first, however was very adequate (and a huge improvement over the speakers in the laptop). However getting into the Control Panel (Sound), I found a new addition there for the recently installed Speakers ~ where I was easily able to add "Equaliziation" and the option of a few other settings ~ plus adjust the sound of them to full volume. Now, we seldom need to turn them up past the halfway point (either by using the controls on one of the speakers or using the on-screen controls). The "Equalization" option also seems to give them more oooomph/depth and seemed to add a little bass to them as well.

We have no problem with the sound of the music played on many of the DVD movies or any other sound for that matter. These are not high quality stereo speakers, they will not come close to imitating the sound/output of a boombox, but for the money, they put out a sound and volume far more than what we were expecting.

The USB connection allows the freedom of not having to plug them into a wall outlet, the wires on them (speaker to speaker and from the one speaker to the USB port) seem ample and then some for our particular needs. And they are a nice little size that is proprtionate to the laptop. Also stable, not top heavy or wobbly, they stay where you put them.

This is one of those products that I wish I had had the foresight to purchase long ago as they have definitely added to our DVD movie watching enjoyment. Amazon shipping as usual was fast and efficient. I plan on purchasing more of these for our other laptops as well.

I bought these speakers as more or less a "starter pair" for when I dock my notebook computer at my desk (I've got a monitor, larger keyboard, and hence speakers - to make it sort of a desktop notebook, so to speak.) I wasn't expecting like a BOSE level quality or anything...but these speakers are really only decent for playing the random sounds a computer makes - beeps, buzzes, whatever. Also, like maybe Skype, even though it sounds a little grainy (my fiance's bass voice sounds tinny and high-pitched when we converse over Skype when he's deployed). But music? Definitely not. I admit that I'm kind of a snob about my music sound - I want some bass, and these speakers do not have any bass to speak of. My iPod headphone sound better. If you really can't afford anything else and you're just going to be listening to computer sounds, then I guess these are fine, but if you like to listen to music at your desk I suggest something better.

Warning to those who do not know:

If you do not have a sound card that supports USB sound connectivity, do NOT purchase any microphones or headsets that run on USB! These will not work unless you plan on purchasing and installing an all-new sound card in your computer that will support playing & recording audio via USB port.

For those with older computers, it is a simple task to look at your sound card port (where you plug in your speakers/microphone - usually in the back of your PC)... If you see the green, red, and black standard audio ports, but NO USB on the same metal plate, then you should not get a USB driven audio device unless you are ready to upgrade your sound card in order to fully support these devices.

There may be updates to the software or drivers on your sound card manufacturer's website, so check there as well before you decide not to get a USB sound device. However, 99% of the time, these USB speakers, microphones, headsets, etc. will not work without the proper physical USB plug on the sound card itself.

Just a little FYI for those about to buy without checking.

There were a number of problems with this item. For one, it only worked with batteries which I had to replace fairly often. Secondly, I could not get a lot of sound out of it. When a friend and I tried to listen to music, we couldn't get it loud enough. After a while, the on and off switch was getting more difficult. I had to keep pressing it to turn on and off. Finally, I came into the room one day and the thing was making a death-rattle type noise. I hadn't turned it on, it just was dying right in front of me. I would not recommend this item. All in all it only lasted for several months with moderate use.

I bought this for my husband to use on his desk at work and we are both disappointed with the sound quality. We were not expecting much because of the price but thought it would be a little better than this....the speaker phone on his desk sounds better. It is much smaller than expected also (should have read the fine print) but you live you learn. It now resides in a drawer in the office with the rest of our "dead" electronics/cords/extras.

These are not going to replace your home sound system, but they work great for carrying into the bathroom for soft music while taking a bath, or putting on a hotel night stand while traveling. It packs up easily, it's really small and it works really well. I was surprised at how loud it can be and still sound OK. It was a good purchase, for what it is and I'd recommend it.

Broke after a few weeks of regular use, the stand/cover is now gone. It took a 16 inch (yeah, I actually measured, I know) fall and the hinge connecting it broke in half.

Nice sound, decent design, but fragile. There's surprisingly few options in this space, but I think you can find something better.

i bought a pair of these last yr after christmas to go with 2 more klh 8in towers just like this. they never really got used because i had one big stereo in my room that i used and that one with the 4 8s in the living room for movies and such. well i sold the rest of it and now i have the sonys hooked up up stairs in my room. the are excellent. i usually turn music up pretty loud and go down stairs so i can hear it all over the house. these speakers do great on the low mid and high end. i listen to rock and country. i throw it a rap song every once in a while for the bass and it sounds good no matter what u throw at it. dont expect the pounding bass from these speakers because u wont get it. it has great sound on the low end just not pounding. i have 2 12s and 2 15s i use for the pounding. the only thing i dont like about these sonys are the screw type things that hold the speakers in. the dont really have any grooves so u cant tighten or loosen them. since ive had them for a yr and have always had it up loud when i used it the mid in one of them has came a little loose and has a slight rattle when i turn it up. not a big deal, its the only con about these speakers

I listened to my niece dance around with her IPOD Glee music and thought, damn. When I was a kid we had huge floor speakers that rattled the neighbors windows and summoned the police. She was happy with her docking station. I was UNHAPPY with her docking station, so... I found my old 200W stereo receiver I had since the 90s and bought these bad boy speakers. I could have gone for huge, but I just wanted to go big enough to blast her "docking station away". She came knocking on my door to see what was booming and was blown away when I reached over and hit "pause" on my IPOD plugged into my receiver. That's right, you can plug an IPOD into a 200W receiver and run these awesome speakers that are loud enough to run a house party. Don't let the size on these fool you. They have the full sound of the old floorstanders of my youth and they sound awesome at low levels. The tweet, mid, & 8" Woof do a song proper. Now, I know I'm not gonna get a 15" Woof rattle like I had when I was younger, but my receiver has 7.1 surround, I can just add a powered Subwoofer If I want to. For now I'm satisfied my IPOD niece gotta taste of real home audio.

Purchased a Roland Juno synth to replace my aging Yamaha DX7. Great keyboard but what I didn't know was that it did not include built in speakers. I wanted to get rid of my rack of amplifier, mixer, drum machine, reverb, etc. because the Roland has it all built in so I considered active speakers and after all the great reviews on the AV 40 bought a pair (BH Photo had the best price). Unbelievable!!! makes the synth sound great. Note that with 1000 different sounds speakers need a broad sonic range and the AV 40 met the demands of the synth AND the vocals which run through the synth via michrophone. There is a switch for extended bass. Having that on is a given. Putting the speakers on separate stands to ear height is also a must. the AV 40 comes with a booklet on setting up for optimum sound. Follow it and you will not be sorry. It sounds tons better than my $500 BOSE Companion 5's and you really do not need a subwoofer.

These AV40 speakers are replacing a pair of M-Audio units I had for 8 years or so. The AV40s sound amazing, I was shocked to think I could get such high-quality sound for so little money. I've got these hooked up to my laptop and they fill my home-office with rich, booming, clear sound. I am very happy and highly recommend these speakers. They are sturdy, heavy, well-made and include pads to reduce vibration and good instructions for placement (which after following I got a much cleaner sound).

When I think of the word beware, I usually think of it written on signs at fork in the roads in Scooby Doo or on doors that hold dangerous creatures behind that have been sealed up for centuries. When people ignore them, everything appears fine, and that the warning was unneeded. But eventually it catches up and you realize you should have heeded it.

Since this is my forte into better speakers, I can't really comment on the sound quality (nor can I when most recordings are victims of the loudness war and are not adequate for testing anything). I can say that to me these are not bright, though I do like that kind of sound. Bass is ok but I'm not really a basshead. Everything sounded fine.

The box includes a manual with technical details of the speakers and another book that tells you how to prepare your room for best performance and how to position the speakers, etc.

Now, the the problem. Quality control. My right speaker is louder than the left one if the volume is really low and then after that the left speaker is louder than the right. Sometimes they are close in volume but not problem fixed close. I did some research on M-Audio's site and apparently this is VERY common. I found a lot of threads about this issue dating back a couple years and it affects AV30 and AV20 as well. You may be able to remedy the problem by turning them up louder and then adjusting the volume from within Windows but this is annoying and not a real fix, others say the problem is inevitable due to design. I also did some research on headphones they make (Studiophile Q40) and found that has it's own set of problems too! One review off site actually broke during/slightly after testing (don't remember which) enough for him to debate whether he should recommend them at all and now I'm in a similar situation. I am convinced that the quality control for this line is out the window. And who really likes exchanging or repairing products, especially when their warranty has you cover shipping both ways? And since these not light lightweight, do not expect it to be cheap.

The AV40's are really directional as well. If you don't have stands or a way to get them to ear level, forget it.

You MAY get a good pair, but had I know better, I wouldn't have taken a chance. Too many lemons floating around.

Sound quality is very very good, and loud enough for normal use.
worth the money spent on them, super value.

with some little issues that could be better:
1) can hear very light buzz with power on and no signal input, as found on most speakers, but not for serious professional use as studio monitor
2) earphone output power is not very strong, and sound quality is not that good, at least not as good and powerful as Sansa Fuze/Clip MP3 player direct earphone jack output
3) the back ofleft speaker with power adapter built-in gets very warm/hot evertime in use
4) it would be better if power switch is built into the volume control in the front, instead of being on the back
5) some people found their right speaker with lower sound level. it should be some M-Audio QC issue. Mine is good, with well balanced sould level

I got these speakers hoping they would be a good fit with my laptop. They've turned out great so far. I've used them for about a month now and there have been no problems. While they are a little bit hefty in size, I do like the fact that you can put stuff on top of them. Adds a new element of desk decoration :P

The speakers are connected via speaker wire (incl.), the left speaker being the one with all of the controls, and the system is connected to your cpu via 1/8". Easy enough. No drivers or any of that nonsense. They sound fantastic, filling up the whole room with full bass and crisp tweets. For the money, I can't think of a better product. 5 stars.

these pair of speakers are great and affordable.
i hooked them up to a rx-v365 yamaha receiver as my main speakers
they may not be the loudest speakers but i can turn up the volume
up to -10 without distorting the sound. the sound is great for such small
speakers besides the base is great too. im creating my review based on the size
of the speakers.

Basic facts: $50 for a PAIR of good sounding speakers. Even after reading the reviews, I'm amazed how good they sound when I compared them to my regular $600 the speakers! You probably want to get a subwoofer to get full range with music and movies, but even then, a good budget subwoofer works fine for maybe $100-150, and these Sony's are still a terrific deal.

Yes, you can spend a lot more to get ones that sound a bit better; but for someone on a budget, even a medium budget, these are definitely the way to go. For $150 you can get 6 of these as main basis for a home theater system.

The only other equivalent [5 speakers] I can think of is the Energy Take 5's, which also sound very good and are modestly priced, but you're getting five speakers at once that way. Regardless, these Sony's are a fabulous, fabulous deal.

I wanted to get the digital sound from my cable box music stations into my bedroom so I bought this amplifier, a pair of SONY SS-B1000 5 1/8-Inch Bookshelf Speakers, and a 20' RCA cord (red/white).

Sounds great and all for under $100.

The amp is barely cranked, and I mean barely, but I have more than enough sound.

The SONY's sound great and for the price represent a real value.

It is probably pointless to add yet another review to this speaker that says "good for the price". Everybody knows that by now. What I have noticed is the few reviews that say the sound is muddy or there is no midrange or highs. (I will discount the complaints about "needing an amplifier")

I will start by mentioning something I have seen in no other review: When I opened the box, there was a notice from Sony taped to the top of the wrappers on the speakers. A warning, actually. It said to be sure to connect the speakers to an amplifier "near" the maximum rating of the speaker. It went on to say that failure to connect them to a "sufficiently powerful" amplifier would result in tweeter burnout.

So, the question is: What is "sufficiently powerful"?

I will spare you the boring details of my research, and give you the bottom line. Do not connect these to an amplifier of less than 40 Watts RMS per channel. At 40 Watts and up, you are pretty much safe no matter how much you crank it. Below that, you risk clipping the waveform going to the tweeter. The clipping will distort the sound and apply what amounts to a straight DC voltage to the tweeter voice coil. This voltage heats the wiring until it melts the lacquer coating on the wire and shorts out the tweeter. (maybe more than you needed to know)

The tweeters use a large amount of the power in, and handle the upper midrange as well as the highs. Severe clipping and/or burnout would result in weakened midrange, no highs, muddy sound.

Not exactly a review, I guess, but maybe it will help some buyers decide whether they want to try these or not.

If you are curious, I have these hooked to an amplifier putting out 105 Watts per channel. Plenty of reserve power, achingly clear and bright highs. Bass is barely adequate, but OK for most stuff I play. You can always mess with tone controls, but turning up the bass doesn't boost the bass so much as richen the lower midrange which is carried by the woofer. Voices are quite clear. I could use better speakers, but these will do until I get around to upgrading. It could be a while.

I was excited about these for my office. I wanted something that had a little more clarity and range than the Dayton B652's that I am using now. Boy am I disappointed. I can't say these sound bad, they don't. But, they are not clear in the mids and don't have much in the higher ranges, they seem to just fade off. They seem to have just a little in the lower range but I have not tested them yet. I was disappointed with how they were not even as clear as the Daytons (which only cost me $25 for the pair!). They are a little smaller, which was nice, but they are just not as clear and as bright in the mids as i thought they would be. There is no crispness and they get even muddier with higher volume. They'll do in an office but I can't recommend them for much else.
