Bought my EX490 a while back and has been a good little server. It resides on my multiplatform lan setup. I am currently running various versions of windows from 98SE to 7 and various implementations of Linux (mostly debian) and Mac leopard and snow leopard. I have software to backup images of every machine and use the native backup capabilities of WHS and also Time Machine for the Macs (handy when I upgraded the hard drive on my mac mini - note - all you need is 1 restore disc for all the macs). Recent modifications to the EX490 other than adding hard drives, are upgrading CPU to Core2Duo and special cable for connecting KVM. Guess I was trying to make it Vail compatible but I am pretty happy now with the way it is. Besides, I now have a 20 TByte HP 2008 server that I use to backup my WHS server. Thank God for Gb Ethernet.

BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK. I bought an EX485 and it just died barely out of warranty. Tried recovery of the server and the server is unreachable by any means suggested on the support website. The LED status lights do not match any conditions listed on the support website. I have a solid white server health light. Don't put your eggs in the HP basket. You'll regret it.

So far I've been really happy with how the server works, but there are a few things you should know that I don't think are very clear in the product description, or that you might not think about.

First (which is probably obvious to a lot of people, but I honestly didn't think about it), it only will convert HOME videos for use on the go, because your actual DVD collection of course comes with copyright protection. Still, this is easy enough to get around. If you download AnyDVD and CloneDVD, AnyDVD will decrypt the DVD, and CloneDVD will copy it to the server. From there, the HP software can convert the file into the appropriate format for your mp3 player, etc. Both of these programs have a very nice free trial period (21 days) so that you can make sure they work before purchasing them, and have worked great for me. I've ripped about 60 DVDs to the server so far, and the HP converter has had no trouble converting the digital copy made by CloneDVD.

Second, your streaming capabilities are only as good as your wireless router. If you have a really old wireless router, the ability to stream video from the server is pretty much non-existent. We haven't upgraded yet, but a Gigabit wireless N router should enable you to stream videos to your TV with the appropriate media adapter (we have an old D-link media server). Again, it's probably obvious to a lot of people, but I didn't think about it before I purchased the server.

Third, I assumed that the ability to install a printer would be part of the software, and for some inexplicable reason, it's not. You can still do it, but you have to log directly on to the server, at which point you'll get a dire warning about how you shouldn't do that because you can mess it up and void its warranty, etc. (To install a printer, the easiest way is to download the firmware from the printer manufacturer, copy it into the "Software" folder in the "Shared folders on server" folder, and then log directly on to the server (Start/Run; type "MSTSC.exe" in the box and click OK. Once you're on, open the Software folder from the server desktop and run it.)

Fourth, if you're buying it because of the remote access feature, you should be aware that most ISPs block the ports (80 and 443) that you need in order to be able to use that particular feature. In order to get them unblocked, you have to upgrade to a business account, which is considerably more per month.

Having said all that, I'm very happy with the home server. My husband takes all of our pictures and stores them on his computer, and I love that I can now access the pictures on his computer without getting a flash drive and copying them. Ditto for music and other media. The backup feature works great (I have it set to back up our computers in the middle of the night), and it is incredibly easy to install additional drives.

This MediaSmart server was a breeze to connect to our wireless network router. Once connected it has run well for some time now. Our only complaint is a complaint with many home servers and that is there appearance. I don't mind having the server visible to everyone, but my wife hates it. However, because of ventilation issues we need to have the server out in the open.

If you are looking for a non-complicated way of having a home server this is a good choice.

I thought that when I scored a HP LX195 MediaSmart Home Server from Amazon Vine, I would have a really sweet addition to my home network. There are four people in the house who all are very active on the network, and I felt that this would become the central hub for file sharing amongst us. Unfortunately, it never quite made it there.

While in theory the device looks to be good enough for the niche it's aiming at, I found it horribly slow. It often took me nearly a minute from the time I signed on until I got the administration screen on my computer. Copying things from my desktop to the server (over cat5 cable, not wireless) was also very slow, enough that I tended to avoid doing so on a regular basis. Couple that with the Mac user in the family not being able to get a good connection for his file shares, and this device was flopping badly.

I'd like to say that I could justify the box solely as a backup device, but that's not even very feasible given the slow connection. It definitely isn't something that made me want to drop my Carbonite subscription, for sure...

For the price, I would expect FAR more from this than I ended up getting. I'm not going to toss it out yet, as I might be able to find a use in a few other scenarios that wouldn't be the standard reason for installing it. But for hitting the target that HP touts here, it was a swing and a miss.

I'm very pleased with the Acer AH340 Windows Home Server. I use it in my business to back up four computers and to provide an Internet-accessible repository for upload/download of folders and files. I don't use it for the entertainment side; streaming of shared music, although I do exchange videos and pictures with family members. I pair the appliance with Symform ([...]) to send off-site my backups. I added a second hard drive, a 1.5 TB SATA drive for $149, and with two more slots available, I have virtually unlimited space available. I think the appliance could use a faster processor such as the Core 2 Duo than the Atom it comes with, and more than 2 GB memory. I'd also like more flexibility to customize the home page Internet users see, but for the $359 price I paid on Amazon, the value in the unit is amazing.

Small in size, frugal in energy use, it's the ideal solution for those of us who have too much "stuff" and several computers (some in different places, as in snowbirds) that should have access to them. I especially like that it automatically replicates all the data on an alternate drive (if you purchase one). It is so easy to add drives through the "hot swapable" removable trays. When you run out of space there will be bigger drives you can substitute ;-), and there's a bunch of USB holes on the back of the case. The provided (MS) software just plain works.

Just Received my Acer H340 this past weekend. I did some research prior to purchasing so I knew what to expect. This instructions from Acer are not accurate. They state that when you first boot the leds will be a solid blue. Not true, the (i) led and the HDD leds will be a solid purple. This is because the system has not yet been initialized. Also, I had to download the most current WHS connector from M$. This is becasue the one supplied by Acer does not support Win7. After I was configured and up and running I went into the server using remote desktop and removed McAfee this causes the (i) led to turn red at different times. I replaced this with ESET Antivirus and all is well.

This unit is a GR8 bang for your buck. Excellent speed, and ease of use..

I have had this WHS since July 2009 and it has worked perfectly. I have added 3 more HD's for a total of about 4.5 TB. I am a little computer savvy and have modified a few things on it by going into Remote Desktop - for one I installed the "Tivo Desktop" application so it can directly download and serve my shows to all the Tivo's in my house. The only trick here is that in order for it to run, you must be log in as the administrator and then exit Remote Desktop without logging out. I did remove the McAfee virus software as well. I just have my main computer monitor the WHS with its virus software. Another thing I have done is taken my old computers/laptops and backed them up onto the server so I can access the information. I am always afraid that I will forget to back up something and loose it when I wipe an old computer, this has set my mind as ease. This Acer WHS has really helped me get my computers, data and files organized.

I had to return the first NAS 210 due to a defect. ZyXel support was very helpful with trouble shooting the problem and determining that the device was defective. I bought it as a server for my Squeezebox Boom internet radio. The American site for ZyXel had an older version of Squeezebox Server (don't recall the number) that did not work. There were significant changes made to Squeezebox Server and only a later version (7.4.1)would work with the radio. A web search provided information on how to get a later version of Squeezebox Server for the NAS 210 through a European ZyXel site. This has worked fine for the SB Boom. However, I have subsequently purchased a Squeezebox Radio that can be operated with a battery. The SB Radio requires an even later version (7.4.2)of SB Server than that needed for the Boom radio. I contacted ZyXel and was informed that they have to purchase a license for the SQ Server from LogiTech/Squeezebox to be able to include it as part of the NAS 210. Apparently a new license must be bought for every upgrade of the SB Server software and they have not purchased the license for the version necessary to run SB Radio on battery power. This isn't a major big deal for me as I needed the server to listen to BBC IPlayer which does work with version 7.4.1. Personal music that is stored on the ZyXel 210 will not play on SB Radio without the later version (7.4.2). I believe the NAS 210 is also slower than some other servers and it does not allow me to stream to my radios at the highest audio quality available through Squeezebox. Still, it does MP3 just fine which is really good enough for my needs. The NAS 210 is a very affordable server with a surprising number of features for the price. I would recommend it.

Here is my opinions:

I baught 1,5 TB WD Cavier Green HDD. First I thought that I can run it without a internal hdd, just with my usb storage but it did not worked.

The torrrent downloading is simple. Don't expect the configuration on similar torrent client softwares. You can not arrenge bandwith per torrent. You can not select files in the torrent. You can not create torrents. Just download and give priority and total bandwidth. You can leave maximum 10 active torrents at the same time.

The other features are fine; you can host your images or your wordpress blog.

The price is good, don't expect too much options with this device.

bought this product and returned it, not sure how other reviewers say it is a great product, and gave 5 stars,
iTunes server did not work, all I saw in itunes is the drive, but did not see any files, network speed is 5-9MB/Sec, and CPU usage on the device is always 100% even when the device is ideal.
On top of all the issues, support is worst they they say they will call you back but they never, and they don't have a clue about the product.

I don't review things to often but I got to say this device impressed me so much for the price that I had to. The software is a little lame in fact im not even using it, but other than that I have nothing but good things to say. Out of the box it took about a min to put in a drive and my Mac recognized the dive on the network immediately. I average about 15 Mb on transfers and haven't had to reboot it yet. The quality housing keeps it running quite and cool even inside a cabinet its cool to the touch, and it is a great size. My 2 TB Western Digital found a happy home!

I had high hopes that I would be able to eliminate an old home server with this item. It was received as expected and was very easy to setup. It is unfortunate that it does not do the job of the old server, or come anywhere close. A backup of my small laptop takes from 7 to 9 hours to complete. On the old server the same backup took less than an hour. I would stay away unless you just need storage that can hold files and you don't need them in a hurry.

I purchased this time on 6/14/2010 for much less than the current item is being listed for. It was fulfilled by RitzCamera. Like one of the other reveiwers, the outside box was for a 500 gb. However, in my case, there was not a 2 tb inside but rather as advertised. Contacted the RitzCamera and they said they would not honor the advertized price. The only option they provided was to return the item.

They were very devious as well in that they said that after returning it if they had the 2 tb version I would then place an order for that time. I asked why they would not just send our the proper item and they said it was not their policy. I then asked them to look and see if they had the item and they said they could not. So, I got in their site and did a quick search and guess what they do not sell a 2 tb version.

Unfortunately, I can't really provide a rating for the server itself... because I can't seem to get Amazon to ship the correct server. I just finished printing the return labels for the SECOND 500GB version of this server that I've received! Yep... they sent the wrong one twice, and yep, I verified that the server actually contained only one 500GB Seagate drive both times.

As an added bonus on attempt number two, the box arrived looking like it had been drop-kicked from Lexington, KY all the way to San Diego, CA. In a way, I was relieved that the server inside the battered box was not the right item.

I'm giving Amazon one more shot at sending the right server. If they fail for on the third attempt, I'll be having them send me a refund instead. Frankly, it'd be a minimal show of goodwill if they overnighted the replacement to me this time, but I'll settle for just getting the 2TB server in a box that doesn't look like the loser in a demolition derby!

Does everything a NAS/Media Server should do plus more. The remote web access is awesome, I can share family videos/photos by assigning User names & Passwords to individual members allowing family to get the latest and greatest video/photos the day I put them on the server. Using "Home Server" dynamic DNS I can host these files on as a static WWW server with a dynamic IP hosted on my DSL line. The user interface is easy to navigate and the server is easy to setup, all my media streams easily. This thing will back up to a removable secondary drive I keep in a safe quickly and easily. The ability to hook up streaming security camera's is a plus if I ever chose to do so. Not to mention the ability to access my music/photo's/videos on various networked electronics throughout the house is a definite plus. I highly recommend this product, for the money I paid you can't beat this thing.

I only have the Asus TS Mini 2TB hooked up for about 24 hours now. It came as expected (3 days early even). The server is much smaller than expect and runs very quiet as other reviews have mentioned. The initial setup as very easy. I had my 2 laptops installed and backups setup in less than 2 hours total from the time I opened the box. So far I am very pleased. Another smooth buying experience from Amazon.com.

BTW - it did come with 2 TB as advertised if anyone is still concerned about that.

I got my TS Mini (2TB) about a week ago from AMAZON ([...]) and it was for $[...] with free shipping and got it in 3 days. The outer box said it was 500GB so I got concerned but when I opened it the product box itself said 2TB. I physically opened the server and yes I did indeed see two seagate drives each 1TB. When I booted it up it showed 1TB and also 2GB of memory. Not sure why some other people got the wrong one.

So far I am very happy with its performance as expected from an ASUS product. I own several ASUS products including motherboards, Video cards and related computer equipment.

PROS:
1). Easy to setup - was a breeze to have it "seen" by my other computers on my home network as well as PS3
2). The quality of construction is also good
3). Super quiet can hardly hear it even with my ears up against it
4). Runs surprisingly cool I can barely feel any heat around it the fans run super quiet
5). User friendly interface for management
6). Lots of USB ports and an eSATA port to expand
7). Gigabit port
8). Very low power consumption
9). Tons of great features

CONS:
1). 32-bit Architecture. I wish this was a 64-bit Architecture but for my needs to store and stream data I can live with 32-bit
2). Some of the "advanced" settings are not very clearly indicated/mentioned in the documentation but I was able to get around it by googling some of the info and setting it up that way. I really wish they had provided some instructions how to take full advantage of some of the neat features...they left it for the user to "discover"

Over all a 5 STAR but for the Lack of good documentation/instructions on some advanced features I give it a 4.

Did you know that HP dropped support of EX470/EX475 (earlier versions of MediaSmart) after the 1 year warranty, and they will not even repair it or provide spare parts? That's right - I was willing to pay HP to fix my unit, and they wouldn't... This may happen to your EX49x too, and you'll hear the same advice from HP tech support as I did: "Buy a new machine and plug your hard drives into it."

The unit was simple to setup. Some of the tools installed by HP aren't documented very well but a simple internet search will give you more info than you would ever need. Easy to add extra drives. Easy to manage. For those who are a little more experienced with servers, you can connect your printers to it and share them to every PC connected to the Server, which is great if you own a laptop and like to be wireless. (You have to remote in using the Start>Run>mstsc command on your Windows PC to install printer drivers/software to share them - a little extra experience is needed here, ALSO don't use this command to install a bunch of extra software unless you want your server to run slow or become unstable)

It has a Celeron processor but since you don't sit in front of it running applications you will never notice, it doesn't require too much power to backup files and share printers.

Overall, this is a very simple and reliable way to backup files and entire PCs, which nobody likes to do. It does it automatically while you sleep!

It's a good product once you installed the software on your computer(s). Everything seems to work quite naturally.

The problem and frustration? I have 4 computers at home. No problem setting up Windows Home Server on my two Dell laptops (like a breeze), but no luck trying to set up WHS on my HP laptop, even though it belongs to the same brand as the HP EX485 server! I called the tech support at HP perhaps 4 times already. To their credit, the tech support folks are very friendly, and tried their best to help. But after trying every trick they can think of, my HP laptop still cannot install the WHS Connector. And I do mean EVERY TRICK (from disabling/uninstalling firewall/antivirus to modifying NetBIOS to setting up new user account to changing registry). The same non-descriptive error message shows up every time I tried to install the software.

At this point, I don't know if the culprit is the HP home server or the Windows Home Server software (although I suspect the latter more). Either way, the experience has been decidedly mixed. I have never before had problem installing ANY software I want to install.

And by the way, my iMac with OS X 10.4 (Tiger) is not compatible with this server. You need at OS X 10.5 or higher.

My family uses the TS Mini to backup one desktop and two laptops, run SqueezeCenter for our Squeezebox internet radio, host our music collection, and perform off-site backups (via CloudBerry). It's run without a hiccup since we got it.

That said, it's a great device as long as you don't need to communicate with ASUS support. I upgraded the version of WHS that came with it, and once upgraded, one of the ASUS extensions stopped working. I contacted ASUS about the issue and after about two weeks, they responded that my TS Mini didn't come with the extension I had issues with. Even after pointing them to the documentation on their own website that shows that the TS Mini *did* come with this extension, ASUS support wouldn't help me to fix/reinstall the extension. I've since uninstalled the extension and everything is working fine.

In searching for a server, I wanted something easy on the electricity in order to keep it on all day. If this does indeed use only 27 watts when at max operating, it's perfect.

I use it for file storage, having WinAmp running at all times to be able to remotely (via Ipod Touch) turn on to stream to an Airport Express with Airfoil (iTunes gave me problems, read below), run uTorrent all the time, and stream to a WD TV Live.

It's doing all these things for me perfectly. The only thing I don't run on it that I had planned on is PlayOn to stream Hulu to the WD TV Live. The CPU is lacking for this, so I do run PlayOn from my laptop when needed.

In installing iTunes to WHS via instructions found on the net, I got it to install, but had the "stuttering/pausing" problem with iTunes. I have this happen once in a long while on my laptop, but with the Server, it was pausing every 3 seconds or so, continuously. I found if I had QuickTime player running, this got rid of the stutter for some reason, but QuickTime then consumed 50-60% CPU constantly. I didn't want to subject the CPU to this, so I switched to WinAmp and Airfoil, and the combination is working fine for my purposes. I'm still able to remotely control WinAmp with my Ipod Touch with a iAmpRemote, although with less capabilities that the Apple Remote and iTunes gives you (sort by artist, song, etc).

My server sits in my family room, so I also installed a USB sound card with XP drivers to the server, and can route sound directly from the server to my stereo via the USB Sound card.

So far, I've been very pleased with it. The Atom Processor is capable for what I use it for (and more so if you don't intend to run things like Winamp/iTunes, etc on it). Anything that takes a CPU power, like PlayOn to process video, will run slowly and not so well on it. So consider the trade offs of the small lower power consuming CPU, versus CPU power needed.

I defer to Apple's documentation and second Brian Stucki's Amazon review of this great product. It fills a niche of providing a real server at a bargain price. (In fact I use Brian Stucki's '[...]t' service to host my mini.)

This machine may seem a bit pricey for a mini, but it easily services at a small business level for email and other standard services. I have been running mine for just under six months without a hitch. Some highlights for me are:

1. The low power profile of the mini
2. The dual drive. Although it lacks an optical drive it allows a RAID-1 configuration (the way I set up mine).
3. The Snow Leopard Server OS. This is the next evolution of Apple's powerful UNIX-based OS's and it is especially good for me since it has the best UI yet. I got mine setup with basic services for about a dozen users within an hour. It also still has the powerful command-line controls that server 10.3-10.5 had and it's all documented well in Apple's pdf on 10.6 Server.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much of the open source movement is embodied in the Apple Mac Mini Server and Mac OSX Snow leopard. But, really, nothing comes close to the integration that Apple has pulled off with the graphical interface and the solid UNIX underpinnings. At times, things seem a bit obfiscated, but you don't ahve to live with this very long to appreciate that Apple really earns the margins they pull down with these models.

Because I wanted the Snow Leopard Server operating system, I decided to do without the internal optical drive. My later purchase of a Samsung external DVD wasn't quite what I had hoped, so if I had it to do all over again I might have settled for the faster CPU and optical drive of the regular Mac Mini. But that might just be because I went cheap on the DVD drive, opting to save half the price by going outside the Apple brand.

The included documentation is sparse, so you'll be online reading hours and hours of eye-straining material if you don't buy a book like the Snow leopard Server Developer Reference. I'll review that later. Right now I'm having too much fun with the extra-cost Xcode development environment and relearning C, C++ and Cocoa Framework. This is really fun stuff. can you Gnu?

Now our house has mostly Linux boxes and a few fading Windows machines. The MAC OSX Server supports acting as a Windows Domain Controller so you can centralize control, and also acts as an Active Directory controller for your resident Macs. And, it took all of five minutes to get Time Machine to start backups to my network storage unit and reduce any concerns about losing files. Time Machine is very cool - you should read about that all by itself. Nifty interface to your backups.

So, why buy from Amazon? Well, my state has Apple stores, so I'd pay sales tax here even if I ordered from Apple. There was a special deal if you took a credit card from Amazon, so the discount was material. Of course, Apple offered the "free" printer deals, but I'll take the discount every time.

Nice product. Totally silent. Too bad the Firewire is reaching end-of-support And where is USB 3.0, you should ask.

I love all 7 of my Macs that I use regularly, from portables to 8 cores. I even like the MacMini very much. If you have a spare monitor, keyboard, and mouse, it is a most capable machine to have for the kitchen, basement, or for the kids. With 4GB RAM, the performance is good, and of course, you get all the benefits of OS X, its software, stability, ease of use, etc. The MacMini hardware is worth the money, given the performance. (The server version has no CD/DVD. I bought an ASUS USB external, which works, but not reliably, especially if all the USB ports are in use, and they fill quickly. The power supply for the MacMini USB ports is not over-engineered.)

But this review is for the SERVER edition of the Mini, which basically means I'm commenting on the software. I have been hosting my own domain (web, mail, DNS, file server, firewall, DHCP, etc.) on a standard Mac for about 8 years very successfully, and on a Mac running some sort of Linux before that. I bought OS X 10.4 Server (Tiger) a number of years ago, but it was unusable. With 10.6 out, I hoped that improvements would make server management easier - analogous to OS X (desktop) versus Windows. Though 10.6 Server is substantially improved over 10.4 Server, it still is a royal pain. The server edition of OS X contains a user interface (GUI) intended to simplify the configuration of unix software - pretty much the same software is installed for both desktop and server versions of OS X, hidden in the unix directories. Almost any unix programs on the server but missing from the desktop can be downloaded and installed for free. (There may be exceptions for particular features, like pod-cast production, that you'd need to investigate specifically.)

Ordinary folks who want to host a vanity site at home or share a file server among a few desktops in a small office will find OS X Server daunting and frustrating. If you do not already know how to configure DNS/BIND, you will struggle from the outset - I have a pretty good sense, and still had a hard time. Many of the "aids" that OS X Server provides are just different enough from standard unix/linux conventions that you can't easily get under the hood to tweak it - the documentation may be clearly written, but is woefully incomplete regarding details and sometimes inaccurate.

OS X Server may support all the features described in their promotional literature, but in no way is it intuitive to configure or manage (in the same way OS X desktop is). For example, the "Internet Sharing" feature of OS X automatically rolls together DHCP, NAT, IP routing, firewall functions and the like. The Server edition requires configuration of each. True, it is MUCH more flexible, but you need to be a unix/network wizard to get it to work in all but the simplest configurations. Before purchasing this product, I advise downloading and reading all the manuals; there are 7 or 8 of them, available at Apple for free. You can decide for yourself your comfort level based on them. Start with a detailed list of requirements for your needs (e.g., hosting more than one web or email domain), then look through the manuals for the information you need to configure it. Plan on needing to reinstall and start from scratch several times before getting it close. Take notes by hand so you remember what you need to do and not do.

If you only need basic services (web site, email, file sharing), I'd recommend a standard OS X machine, MacMini or otherwise, plus a few very affordable utilities from CutEdge Software, which require minimal user sophistication. If you need some of the fancy features of OS X Server, you will need considerable expertise in server and network administration, so much that free alternatives, running on Macs or cheaper hardware, begin to look attractive. In fact, if you are at that level, you may be frustrated by the idiosyncratic and inconsistent use of Apple (e.g., /System/Library or /Network) versus unix (/etc or /usr/bin/) file location conventions. Sometimes they're integrated or compatible, sometimes not. You could be looking at a big investment of time to figure it out for any given issue.

You should also be aware that, unlike the desktop OS, anytime there is a major OS Server revision (e.g., Leopard to Snow Leopard), you have to buy a new license at full price. There is no upgrade path.

Bottom line: This is a fine computer (5 stars), but the extra ~$300-400 for the software is not worth it (a half-star). For basic domain hosting on Macs, easier, cheaper alternatives exist. If you require OS X Server's more advanced features, you probably should be using more robust hardware than a MacMini ... and you are looking at a big investment of time to learn how to configure/manage them, equivalent to the effort required to learn other server software which is available for free.

Couldn't have been easier to set up! In very little time I had this little wonder serving media to the entire house. I hooked up a WD 4TB Firewire 800 drive locally and then connected it to my 6TB Network Attached Storage device. The Mac Mini Server acts as the central iTunes server, photo library, Time Machine backup repository, and file storage for the whole family. It also has enough CPU Power to encode and upload videos. I rarely hear the fan kick on and it is uses very little electricity which was a huge selling point! You can either drive two 24 inch LCD displays at 1900x1200 using both the mini-DVI and mini display port connections or just use Apple Remote Desktop to run it headless in a closet.

Lastly, the iChat server is pretty cool if you have lots of kids like I do. I could see it also working great for a small office.

I would purchase this again if I had it to do all over and would recommend this to any of my friends.

Guys i am not one to post reviews, this is my very 1st time, however on this unit i had to. the unit is excellent, i have it up and running now for a month, with not one single problem. the only thing that i would would like to pass on to prospective buyers that i could not find clearly stated in any manual on the the web site is this. if you have multiple computers etc. on your network and have assigned static ip to all units you must, change your router to DHCP, AND ALSO ONE COMPUTEPER, then the unit will be found on your network, after you have done this and install the software, you will be able to go back and change your router back to static ip, and also the one computer that you changed over, you will only at this phase, be able to assign a static ip to the acers, this process caused me to make several phone calls, and none one on the other side could help. then then sent me to a department that i had to pay $69.0 for 30 minutes for help. and they could not help me. therefore do not pay this money, just change the router to DHCP. if your network is already set to DHCP then you will not have any problems setting this unit up. and you will love the benefits that this unit have to offer. by the way this is he only reason, tech support, why i will not give this unit a 5 start

It is very user friendly, although having some working knowledge of windows and disc management/formatting is helpful (it took me one or two tries to get the addition 2TB Hitachi HDD I added up and running), and more extensive documentation would be welcome. Other than that, however, it does exactly what it's supposed to do, and it has been 100% satisfactory in its performance. I am very happy with the easyStore, and recommend it whole-heartedly!

I bought this product, and 3x 2TB drives for a total of 8TB of space.

This product is very intelligent and quiet. It takes care of all my backup needs automatically and it even takes care of backing itself up to an external 1TB USB drive that I also had available. The approach it uses for backups if very smart, since if several computers on the network all have files in common (which is usually true since most of what is on each PC is the same as the rest), it only backs up one copy of the file, not one per PC.

The system responds very fast to media/folder browsing requests. I had a Linksys NAS 200 box before this, which was terribly slow to respond. But this box responds so fast that it seems like a local disk to me.

I also like that this network storage solution is a real computer, which means you can actually log into it using windows remote desktop and do things (if you want to, and are computer savy). That means that if something were ever to go wrong on the box, you (or a techy friend) can actually login and install/run standard windows apps to try to correct things. Most other network storage devices are linux based and not designed for login access so if something goes wrong, you can't easily get into the box to work on it.

I bought this little box so that I could centralize all my backups from about 5 computers in my household. I was getting tired of all these little external drives flying around so I decided to get this expandable home server. For the money, it's not bad. It's not the fastest backup server but it is quiet and the backups run with very little processor hit.

You can use Remote Desktop to get into the boxes operating system, which is a lightweight Windows 2003 Server. I wouldn't do this if you're just an average user. I've been developing and working with computer systems for 20 years so I know what I'm doing. Still, I make backups of the original files I'm about to change so I can put them back if I really mess something up.

Configuring the box for remote access was a bit of a challenge, not from the boxes end but from the routers end. I have an older router that does support UPnP but I had to manually open up the ports and also manually configure the server for a static IP address. Changing it off of DHCP did freak the box out a bit and I had to restart it but it was ok after that.

The server only has 2GB of memory so I wouldn't try to use it as a web server with high traffic but it's ok for your friends and family to go in, see your pictures and videos. I especially like this feature because I can keep some informational items I like to access on it and have some of my video podcasts subscriptions load to it too so I can merely access them on my netbook at lunch without having to remember to manually load it.

My main computer, which is a 2.5TB Quad Core system, does take a long time to backup. But I still can use the computer while the backup is running and I don't notice the processor hit. I wouldn't run a lot of music tracking software like Cakewalk or Pro Tools while backups are running but for normal use, images, watching movies, internet surfing, etc. is ok while it's backing up.

When I bought the server, I did buy an extra 2TB hard drive so I could have about 4TB's of space to start. After getting it set up, I can't wait to fill up the additional two drive bays with 2TB drives. That'll do me for a few years.

For the money, this is a sweet box and I'm very happy with my purchase. You get some decent server power for your home and it's just a little quiet box with flashing lights that sits on your desk.

QUICK SUMMARY: Acer's AH340 server, when configured correctly, provides home users and small offices a powerful solution for automated backups, restores, remote access and media server capability. However, configuring this server can be challenging, and Acer makes little effort to help its customers. Microsoft's Windows Home Server is a terrific -- and stable! -- operating system. Add a 2nd hard drive, too, and you've got redundant data storage. Cautiously recommended.

*** SPECIAL NOTE as of February 6, 2010: McAfee Antivirus automatically updated their software to Version 5, which totally screwed up my server! STAY AWAY from McAfee!! If you buy this server, immediately use Remote Desktop to open the server's Control Panel, choose Add or Remove Programs, and uninstall McAfee from your server! McAfee cannot be trusted! Read the end of this review to learn more.

What follows is my review of this Acer AH340 home server, based upon my personal experience with it since purchasing one in late June 2009. (Note: I bought the earlier Acer Aspire AH340-UA230N Home Server model, which came with a single 1TB hard drive. The AH340-U2T1H -- this model -- is exactly the same as the AH340-UA230N EXCEPT it comes with a *2TB* hard drive). If you read this very long review, you'll learn quite a bit about this Acer server and the Windows Home Server operating system. You'll also read about some minor issues I've run into, and how to workaround those issues. I've owned this server for six months now, and it's been a good experience overall. If you buy this Acer server, you're not going to get much help from Acer. So for any problems, your own technical know-how and the Internet community are your best sources of help.

In short, I bought this Acer server and successfully installed it on my home network. In very large part, it's doing what it's supposed to be doing, that is, it automatically backs up my four-computer home network, and it gives me remote access to my data, too. Thus far, I have only one small, re-occurring issue which I'll share in a moment.

The out-of-box experience is pretty good, but don't expect much by way of documentation. You'll need to look elsewhere to understand all the ins-and-outs of using Windows Home Server (WHS). Although the "Quick Start" booklet seems very thick, it's actually got the instructions in about five or six languages, and so when you read the English section (if you read English), you'll only see how to set-up the server with a little narrative and black-and-white screenshots that are difficult to read. Fortunately, the setup is pretty easy, and they do include a larger poster with just the absolute essentials (which is what I used), and the poster was good enough. In short, plug-in the ethernet cable from the server to your wireless router, and you're in business. The server is heavier than I expected, and *quieter* than I expected (much less noisy than my desktop computer).

Then, you install a CD in one of your available networked computers to install the Server Console on the installed-from computer, and to begin configuring your new server. One things stands out in my mind here...the instructions say turn-on your server and wait until the blue LED light is glowing steady. Trouble is, there are about seven or eight lights glowing at this point (one light for each of the four disk drive bays, a power-on light, a network light, an "information" light, and possibly a disk activity light), and some of the lights glow purple, not blue. Suffice it to say that you should wait a few minutes just to make sure everything is settled before you start server configuring.

The server configuration went pretty well, I thought. Do a Google search for "Acer Windows Home Server Review" and you'll find a website where someone has very helpfully documented the entire install process using color screenshots of each step. The installed server console program (running on one of your networked computers) is not resizeable and won't maximize, which is annoying. You can use Remote Desktop Connection to actually login to your new server (if you're not familiar with Remote Desktop Connection, it lets you connect to another computer from the computer you're using).

In a very short time, my old, quirky Gateway desktop computer (circa 2003, XP Pro, 2Ghz CPU, 512MB RAM, 80GB HD) was recognized by the new Acer server, and I was creating user accounts on the server that match my desktop computer (you should use a password on your user accounts, and be sure to specify the same password on the server as what you use for the desktop/laptop account).

At this point, I had my first problem -- the Gateway's connection to the server would get lost inexplicably during the first attempt at a manual backup. Long story short, I completely reinstalled Windows XP Pro SP-3 on the Gateway desktop, reinstalled the Windows Home Server Console, and was able to begin getting successful backups until I got to the point where I restored all my digital media files (using Acronis and an external hard drive -- not using the new Acer server) and then tried a WHS backup, which fails inexplicably. Could be my aging and quirky Gateway hardware, but it's a fresh install of XP and the error messaging is vague and unhelpful.

Notably, my three laptops (running XP Media Edition w/1GB RAM, Vista Ultimate w/2GB, and Windows 7 Ultimate w/4GB of RAM) backed up their contents perfectly -- no troubles at all, even backing up a very large VMWare virtual hard drive (which is a single, physical, 20GB file on my Vista laptop).

Very cool feature: This Acer will wake-up either a sleeping or hibernating computer to do the backup in the middle of the night! So, don't turn-off your computers, just put them in sleep/hibernate mode so they don't use much power, but will still get backed-up. (Note: WHS does *not* use Wake On LAN technology, which doesn't work reliably in all environments - the WHS technical strategy for waking sleeping/hibernating computers works much better than WOL). The WHS backups are incremental, so you can return to any previous point in time during a restore -- you aren't limited just to what was done last night. This is handy if you want to restore your computer to the way it worked one month ago, when it was working reliably (you'd probably do a 2nd restore, then, to load all your most recent data following the system restore).

To get remote access to work correctly, you need to modify your ISP's modem setups (your ISP's modem most likely has a built-in router, too). Choose "Bridged over Ethernet" protocol in the modem setups, and then configure your wireless router that's attached to the modem so it is a PPPoE connection (you'll need your ISP's account name and password for the router configuration). Once I got through this headache, I was able to gain remote access to my server -- very cool feature!! (BTW, don't count on any technical help by AT&T/Bellsouth - you won't get any that's helpful to you). You may also have trouble if your ISP blocks certain ports, like ports 80 and 443. One Amazon customer reported that Verizon blocks those two ports which are necessary to get remote access to your server. (ISPs generally don't like the idea of you running a server from a residential high-speed connection).

I did a successful restore of my quirky Gateway computer, just to see what that's like. Very simple. Install a Restore CD in the computer (which must be connected by ethernet, not wirelessly), and choose a backup on the server you'll use for the restore. I did this twice, and it worked perfectly and easily. A computer with XP SP-3, Office Pro and maybe 5GB of personal data was restored in about 20 minutes!

In short, it's a 4-star product because I can't backup my digital media files on my Gateway. My Gateway desktop hardware *is* quirky, so that very well might be the problem root cause, but even still, the WHS backup is unhelpful in diagnosing the exact issue for me. (The Windows Event Viewer alludes to a buffer space issue with a socket, but that's beyond the home consumer's ability to understand).

**** July 2, 2009 UPDATE

I've had this for just a few days now, and things are working nicely. I've got all my personal data on a shared folder, making all my data accessible anywhere on the Internet (by design - I could turn off remote access if I wanted). Everything is working very well. Using Offline Files and Folders (on XP Pro or Vista Pro/Ultimate), I've now got a great solution to carrying my data with me on my laptop. Note, though, that for the auto-backup function to work, your laptop should be plugged in, and I noticed this morning that the kids' laptop didn't go back to sleep after getting awakened for backup. That's only been a problem with one of my four computers, so it's probably computer-specific, and not a problem with WHS.

I added another 1TB hard drive: Western Digital 1 TB Caviar Green SATA Intellipower 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD10EADS [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]. (You might want the 2TB version since this server has a 2TB drive). There's no instruction on how to actually do that, but here's the key: slide the orange knob on the front of the empty drive bay to take the cage out -- swinging that cage door fully open will disengage a hard drive from the server (but at the moment, the cage is empty, so it really doesn't do anything). One side of the mostly-plastic cage is meant to be gently bent so you an insert the new hard drive and fit it into the four button-pins (it's not screwed into the cage). When you slide the cage back into the server, shut the cage's "door" halfway until the cage is slid back as far as it can go. Then, fully close the cage's "door" to make a snug fit between the hard drive and the server's pin receptacle. I bumbled my way around to figure this out, as there are no instructions to explain this.

When you power-on your server, it'll recognize the new drive. You need to add it to the server's storage space (whether you want to use it as additional storage or whether you want to enable data redundancy so your data is stored on two drives, not just one).

By adding a 2nd hard drive, I can ask WHS to automatically make a copy of all my shared folders onto the 2nd hard drive, giving me data redundancy. Note: The WHS database that keeps track of all your backups is *not* redundantly stored, though. There is a free add-in to the server console (called WHSBDBB) which can make a backup of the backup database, but that's a manual process. This is a limitation of WHS, not specifically with this Acer server.

I bought a one-year McAfee license for the antivirus (by default, the server runs Windows Firewall and not McAfee's firewall). The process was klutzy and confusing after I clicked "Buy Now" on the server console (under the McAfee tab). Although others appear to have gotten a six-month introductory license, my Acer server came with only 45-days, and when I renewed, it didn't begin the year after the 45-day period, it began immediately, so I essentially lost out on a free 45-day window to use McAfee. (Update 8/29/09: I suspect that McAfee is the reason I get the "WHS Console blue screen" -- keep reading.)

I bought a new APC-branded UPS for the server. By plugging in the data cable running from the UPS to the USB port on the server, the server immediately recognized the UPS. I easily configured my shutdown wishes by remoting into the server (Control Panel > Power Options > Alarms).

*** July 17, 2009 UPDATE

I took a 2-week vacation and had the server running while away -- it ran just fine, and although there was nothing to backup, I did have remote access to my files and I could remotely use the server console to control the server. However, shortly before I returned home, I did notice one small glitch: the server console apparently hangs and becomes unresponsive when trying to sign-on to the server (from another, connected computer) after a period of time goes by, or after certain tasks are performed on the server.

Today, for instance, I installed then uninstalled the AutoExit 2008 add-in program, and after uninstalling, I couldn't use the server console any longer. This is not an infrequent problem with WHS. Trying to logon just creates an empty console window after I give it my authentication credentials. Rebooting the server appears to be the only way to get the server console to work properly once more. (August 7, 2009 Update: I reported this issue to Acer. Here's what they said: "Unfortunately, we are unable to offer support for this type of issue..."). I've done plenty of Google searches, and this is not a widely-reported problem, but it *may* be caused by McAfee. (August 9, 2009 Update: After a few days of console unresponsiveness from a networked computer, yesterday the server console connected once more, even without a server reboot!)

For me, that's not a big problem because I can still reliably use Remote Desktop Connection to access the server. Get familiar with Remote Desktop Connection on your operating system. Windows XP, Vista and 7 all have Remote Desktop Connection which allows you to connect to another computer (though WHICH computer you can connect to depends -- for instance, you can connect to a Windows XP Professional or Windows Home Server computer, but not a computer running Windows XP Home Edition). If you can't remotely connect to your server, you'll wind up rebooting the server using the power on/off button -- very inadvisable for the place you're storing backups and shareable data! Also, if you plan on using remote access via the Internet to get to the server console, then look at the HP servers, not this Acer!

All other functions are working just fine: automatic backups, data redundancy, remote access to files & folders, remote control (of my other networked computers -- getting control of the server itself remotely is dicey due to the bug I've mentioned). I like this Acer-branded Windows Home Server, and would certainly recommend it to others with at least a hobbyist's interest in computers and/or networks. The installation was easy (except for the issue with the Bellsouth modem/router, which I had to resolve to get remote access to my server and data). It's not for grandma, though, unless you're providing grandma with IT support. :-)

One thing more: it is very easy to remove the Acer default home page from your server's personal website. Do a Google search "change the default Acer homepage" to learn how.

*** July 21, 2009 UPDATE

Last night I used this Acer to create a media server. I just moved folders from the My Music (XP) or Music (Vista) folder into the Music folder of the Acer Windows Home Server. When the server console is first installed on any networked computer, it also makes ready for installation the Windows Media Center Connector, which allows Windows Media Center to easily find all those pictures, videos and music on the home server. After installing and rebooting the Connector software on each networked computer, Media Center finds (slowly -- you'll see new albums added and appear while you're browsing your media library) everything on the server. Streaming from the server to the networked computer was flawless. Album art somehow makes its way to the server, too! Now I'm search of a solution that lets my old stereo tap into that digital storehouse on the server (without spending nearly $300 on a Squeezebox).

One last thing: When downloading data from the server using the Internet, if your download is large (say, 100mb or more), the download will finish but your web session seems to time-out, and you have to close the browser and reconnect. Short downloads of either files or folders didn't have this problem. My DSL upload speed is 512/Kbps (that's in 'kilobits'), so the download is no faster than about 52/KBps (that's in 'kilobytes'). For me, that translates to about 3MB/minute in download speed. Eg, you won't be streaming video over the Internet, but music streaming is fine.

*** July 25, 2009 UPDATE

I played with video streaming recently. I've got lots of AVI files taken with a Canon digital camera. The AVI's do not stream well at all, but that appears to be an issue either with the AVIs themselves or with the codecs I'm using (I have plain vanilla Microsoft Media Center or Media Player). Interestingly, I tried streaming a 720p, HD video clip in WMV format (across my home network, not the Internet), and the streaming was perfect! Note: both the CPU and network bandwidth (on a g-network) had plenty of headroom left to do other tasks while streaming the HD video clip. To stream my AVIs, though, I have to use a video converter to create WMV files.

Today, the server console icon glowed yellow (warning). Apparently the server monitors the Internet connection of its own website, and it was telling me that the website wasn't available to Internet connections. Seems as if Bellsouth was doing something to my DSL line, but I thought it was cool that the server would warn me that my website wasn't available! Soon after, when the DSL was up, the server console icon went from yellow back to green. The same icon glows yellow for other reasons, too, like if a computer hasn't been recently backed-up, or if you add a new hard drive but don't configure it for backups. Very nice features.

***** JULY 29, 2009 UPDATE

One last word. Yesterday I tried restoring one of my laptops (I figured, "No problem" because I'd restored two other computers just fine). However, the Restore CD failed to load a Windows default network driver that worked with my laptops network adapter! I learned two things: 1) Once you install your server, take the steps necessary to do a restore (even if you abort it at the last step) to ensure you *can* restore. 2) If the default network driver won't work with your computer's network adapter, download the right driver, unzip it, and put the (*.sys, *.inf) files on a USB drive's root directory, as you'll need to perform an extra step of loading the network driver during the restore. Once I did that, the Restore program found/loaded the right network adapter driver, and I was on my way once more.

***** AUGUST 4, 2009 UPDATE

Thought I'd mention to everyone that the Windows Home Server backups do **NOT** backup the Recycle Bin, temp folders, shadow copies, or the client-side cache (if you use Offline Files & Folders, those copied folders are stored in the Windows\CSC folder). This is important to know because if you restore your computer BEFORE you have synch'ed all your files and folders (using the Sync Center in Vista), you'll lose those changes after the restore is complete. The backups aren't image-based like Acronis (which saved my hide because I was able to get to the client-side cache in an Acronis image backup). Also, the nightly backups do **NOT** backup the shared folders on the server (Photos, Videos, Music, and all user shared folders). If you have 2+ hard drives in your server, you can turn-on duplication so the shared folders are copied onto a second hard drive (for data redundancy), but you won't gain the benefit of incremental backups that keep track of the changes to those shared folders. You can use an external hard drive to make a backup of the shared folders (to have an offsite backup of your data), but that method doesn't give you automatic, nightly backup of any changes to the shared folders. Lastly, shadow copies aren't supported in Windows Home Server. So, if you want to keep track of all your incremental changes to your files, store them on the local hard drive, not the server, so they're backed-up every night. If you don't care about incremental changes, store them on the server so they're shareable and accessible via your WHS website.

*** AUGUST 30, 2009

Thought I'd share the good stability I'm having with my Acer server. It's been running 24/7 for the last 18 days (18 days ago it performed an automatic update of the operating system and rebooted). I've had no further trouble with the server console not responding/connecting -- until today! This morning, McAfee ran a once-a-week virus scan, after which the Acer red information light began glowing (meaning "Critical" network problem -- apparently, McAfee real-time protection stopped working either during or after the weekly scan), and the WHS Console application got a blue screen when trying to logon. I don't know for certain that McAfee is the cause of the WHS Console blue screen (which, btw, is different than the Windows BSOD...the WHS Console blue screen just means that after entering a password, the console application won't appear...you can still reliably use the console by using Remote Desktop and launching the console directly from the server Desktop). However, I see others have had this same problem running WHS on an *HP* server that also was running McAfee. After waiting a few hours, the red light turned to blue and the McAfee service apparently starting running again on its own. The WHS console still doesn't connect from a networked PC, though. Throughout this, though, the server still was accessible. To get the WHS Console to respond, use Remote Desktop Connection to your server, open Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+END), click the Users tab and look for any connections (besides the one you just established) and logoff any hung-up connections. That's what cleared up the problem for me. I don't know why I had a hanging Administrator connection, but I did, and logging-off that connection caused the WHS Console to respond normally once more -- without rebooting the server, which also would have worked.

After 18 days, remote access from the Internet works flawlessly, streaming music over the Internet works fine. Backups happen every night (as long as my laptops are plugged-in to the wall socket). I was reading about Verizon's 4G network where upload/download speeds are fast enough to support streaming video. The future looks bright with Windows Home Server and this Acer!

Oh, if you want to remove the built-in McAfee software, you'll need to do so using the server's Control Panel (so you have to use Remote Desktop to get to the server). You can't remove McAfee using the console's function of installing/uninstalling server "add-in" programs because the McAfee add-in program isn't listed. Acer has somehow baked in the McAfee product in its implementation of the WHS operating system.

Let me reiterate one point I made earlier: If you buy this Acer, don't expect *any* help from Acer's technical support. Either you'll have to figure out your own problems yourself, or you'll engage the Internet community for help. If you're not comfortable doing this, buying a server -- especially from Acer -- isn't for you.

**** SEPTEMBER 10, 2009 UPDATE

My Acer server rebooted itself last night when it automatically installed the Windows updates from Microsoft. Unbelievably, I didn't ever have to manually reboot the server in the last 30 days! It quietly ran and did its automatic, nightly backups of my 4 PCs, and the server reliably streamed music for me every day at work over the Internet. The server's last reboot was after the August install of Windows updates. I never had a Windows-based computer that was this reliable.

**** OCTOBER 26, 2009 UPDATE

Still running like a charm! Backups are done every night, as long as the laptops are plugged in. BTW, the server does backup Windows 7 machines with Power Pack 2 (Power Pack 2 is a major software service release from Microsoft; it includes bug fixes and often some new functionality. This is a free download, and you should install it when you're first setting up your server.) The only time this server reboots is to install the once-a-month Microsoft updates. The server is simply rock-solid. (Note: As of November 24, 2009, Microsoft made available Power Pack 3 which adds some additional enhancements, especially for Windows 7 users. You should update WHS to Power Pack 3 to get the latest bug fixes and enhancements. If you already have a Windows Home Server and have automatic updates turned-on, then Power Pack 3 will automatically install itself).

*** NOVEMBER 17, 2009 UPDATE

My quirky Gateway desktop's hard drive crashed! I've never had a hard drive crash before! The Gateway had two 80GB hard drives, so I yanked the master drive which crashed, and made the slave drive the new master. Popped in the Acer PC Restore CD and the original C drive contents was restored in less than half an hour. Because automatic backups occur nightly, I lost nothing. Although I don't have the 2nd hard drive anymore, all that data is accessible from one of the backups on the Acer server. The whole ordeal was just a minor inconvenience, rather than a disaster. Very, very cool.

*** JANUARY 15, 2010

Weirdly, after a monthly update, my Acer server wasn't seen by Windows Explorer as one of the networked computers in my workgroup. It was still addressable by its IP address, though, and I could still see data in Explorer via the mapped drives I added earlier. I just couldn't see my server as one of the computers in my Windows workgroup. What's up? Long story short, this can happen with Windows workgroups. You can do web searches to learn all the gory details, but here's what you need to do if this happens. Power-off all computers (I also powered off my router and modem, too). Then, power-up just the Acer server, firstly (or the modem, router, then the Acer server). Wait 10 minutes or more so the server goes through all it's start-up tasks. After that, power-on all the other computers on your network. This seems the best way to make the Acer server the "master" recordkeeper for all the computers in a Windows workgroup. I tried this, and it worked for me.

*** FEBRUARY 6, 2010

My Acer server went on "Critical" status today. Why? McAfee's antivirus files are out-of-date. They haven't been updated in two weeks. Why not? I tried manually updating them via the console; no dice. I tried other measures, too, all unsuccessful. Finally, I had to uninstall/reinstall McAfee using McAfee's horrible web interface. But why did I have any problem at all? Here's why: McAfee's just automatically updated their software on my server from version 4.9 to 5.0. However in the process, my "McAfee Total Protection" stopped working correctly, and I've spent most of a day trying to uninstall/reinstall McAfee all without success! Lesson learned: Don't buy a license to use McAfee antivirus! Try another antivirus made for Windows Home Server. I'm trying Avast's antivirus right now -- 60 day free trial.

Avast WHS edition is a winner! I bought the 3-year license. The service works well, updates regularly, scans weekly, all without bothering or pestering me, or fouling up the Acer server. And, the WHS console has not ever been unresponsive or given me the problematic blue screen since I switched. Recommended!

This is a wonderful case, especially at this price. The included Antec 650 watt power supply alone sells for nearly the same as this case/ps combo. The case itself is very well made, with a convenient layout, tons of fan mounts, clearance for large heatsinks, and easy access points to all drive bays. The steel is a bit thinner than I'd expected for a server case, but it's still sturdy. The finish doesn't chip or scratch eaily either. Overall I'd highly recommend this for anyone looking to build a workstation or small office server.

The red light of death came on my drive and it was no longer accessible on my computer. A search showed that this is a big problem. Seagate's tools won't work when the red light of death comes on. The good thing is that I'm getting it replaced under warranty. I bought a WD 1TB at the same time -- and although less than two years old -- when it crashed they showed it was out of warranty. I got it at Best Buy and don't have a receipt -- but I'm sure it didn't sit on their shelves for a year.

Both the MY Book and the Maxtor eternal drives lasted less than a year -- and hosed all of my data. If you are using this as a back up -- you better back up the backup. If you are using this as a main drive -- get ready for heartache.

When my first drive failed I contacted Seagate. For $25 they sent me a new one (refurb most likely) and I return the failed drive. This happen THREE times before I got a good working unit. You read it right, THREE TIMES! Well, the one I kept just died with 500 GB of precious music. I can restore it but what a pain. Word from support guy? Sorry, you will need to replace it at your own cost. Not to crazy about purchasing anything from these guys.

I have had trouble with smaller external drives in the past. I figured it was because they were always in the back seat of my car, my backpack, the kitchen counter and occasionally hooked up to a computer.

I have 22,000 photos backed up and I wanted something big and reliable. I bought this and have never moved it off of my desk. About once a week I back up to it.

Then I discovered that I could not add a file or even create a folder on this drive, even though there was lots of unused space. I received this error code, "Error 0x80070571" I googled it and found out lots of people have this problem. I exchanged many emails with the support staff at seagate, and their most recent suggestion is to reformat the entire drive and start again.

I bought this to make my life simpler. It has not helped.

I also went through two Seagate Maxtor Central Axis units, because they got the dreaded blink red lights. I always noticed they seemed to run hot, and they didn't have a fan.

So, when I got my third replacement about 6 months ago, I put a small fan on it. It blow's air from the below the unit. A laptop cooler would work perfectly, and you would be able to power it from the USB port on the Maxtor.

Its been running 24/7 like a charm, and best of all, the case is cool to the touch, versus being almost hot.

So, the main problem with the previous units was they overheated. If you want you're to last, put a fan on it. Let me say it again, if you want it to last, put a fan on it.

The setup is easy for standard PC. But if the PC has some extra security mechanisms, such as firewalls, installed and running while you are trying to setting up, you may be in trouble. Out of the 4 PCs I set up, one had issues until I fixed the TCP/IP stack and turned off the firewall.

Saving files into the storage is quite fast. However, reading files from the storage is very slow. It is so obvious because when I drag-and-drop a 4MB file from a PC to a NAS220 shared drive the operation is finished instantly. But when I drag-and-drop the same file from NAS220 back to the PC the operation takes 10-15 seconds. I tried files of various sizes and the results are similar. All machines are connected to the NAS220 with 1Gb Ethernet switch. So the network is not the bottleneck.

I did upgrade the firmware to the latest. I think the slow read from NAS220 is a software issue. Seagate should put some effort in fixing the problem with another firmware upgrade.

After using this for a while I have to say that I'm disappointed with the speed to read from the storage. I have done several measurements. The speed is around 248Kbytes/sec. This is not acceptable in today's environment. It means a 1MB file takes 5 seconds, and just one 8MB picture needs 40 seconds.

OK. I did some more online research. The issue is with the 1Gb D-Link switch connecting NAS220 into the network. Changing to a Netgear switch seems solved the problem. Having said that, it is still a Seagate quality issue. D-Link is not an obscure brand. Seagate should have done a lot more Quality Assurance to make sure NAS220 is compatible with major brands of switches. And if it is indeed a D-Link issue that is not solvable, Seagate should put up a warning, prominently, in each package to list all compatible and supported Ethernet Switches so customers won't be as much frustrated as I have been.

I purchased this and within a week it would not come on line anymore. Dealt with horrible tech support and was told there was "no way" for me to get my data off the drives unless I had an enclosure and a "linux reader". I am a voice/data networking technician and could not believe the lack of concern for my data and for their ability to keep me as a customer.

The Dlink dns-323 is a much better nas device and since you purchase your own drives all of your eggs are not in one basket in case of component failure, unlike the 220.

I was so upset by the lack of support that I didn't even purchase seagate drives for the new nas device. I am also telling all of my customers about the poor support and my issues with Seagate.

Not sure why my other review doesn't show up but I'd suspect Amazon censored it or filtered it.

This device is absolutely worthless for anything but a connected USB hard drive. Do yourself a favor and check the blackarmor Seagate forums before buying. You will not be able to join this to an active directory domain, ftp doesn't work properly (Seagate even confirms this), and it is loud and slow. Like many others you will see in their support forums, I spent countless hours messing with these devices until I finally gave up. Save your money and your time.

To date I still haven't been able to get my print sever from Linksys to work as advertised. the problem lies with the print server's IOS, and the operating systems I am using. First they don't tell you that the Linksys print server does not work with a 64bit vista system ( the main reason for my purchase) Linksys has no drivers that will work with Vista or Windows7. So this makes it impossible for me to use it.It did state that it would work with Vista 32bit system.But when I tried to install it on the 32bit system, all I receieved were error messages, to date I still haven't been able to get it to work. I tried Linksys's tech support. But they were totally useless. They stated that Linksys hasn't produced the drivers for Vista or Windows 7 64bit edition yet. I still have two Windows XP system's that I haven't tried yet , So hopefully it won't be a total loss This will be the last time I purchase a recondition product, although, I never had a bad experience purchasing a recondition unit the time factor along with the lack of information for warranty repairs left a bad taste in my mouth.

I would strongly suggest that the description of this product on Amazon should state prominently that "according to the manufacturer, Linksys, the WPSM54G is not compatible with Windows7," because that is exactly what Linksys tech support will tell you if you contact them for assistance.

Two Questions:

1. Are you planning to install this device on a machine running Windows7?

2. Is your time worth more than five dollars per hour?

If the answer to both those questions is yes, then I advise you not to purchase this product.

Yes, there is plenty of chatter out there that says you can get this print server to run under Windows7, and maybe you can, if you are an experienced IT professional. But even if you are an experienced IT professional, the dollar value of the time you will waste tweaking everything to make the thing work with Windows7 would buy you about three wireless print servers that will run as Plug and Play under Windows7.

And, yes, if you are only an average reasonably tech-savvy consumer, you might get lucky and stumble upon the magic order of things within the first three hours after you open the box. But the more likely scenario is that, like me, after four hours, you will be starting back at square one for the umpteenth time, surrounded by the piles of the clumps of hair you will have pulled from your own head, hoping against hope that this time, maybe this time, please lord, maybe this time, you will get it to work.

I do think that eventually my stubborn persistence will "pay off," and I will get this thing to run under Windows7. But before that magic moment arrives--if it ever does arrive--the value of my lost time will have been sufficient to have paid for several wireless print servers that will run under Windows7. Really, if I weren't so stubborn, I would be money ahead just to buy a different device and toss this one in the trash right now with the other Linksys devices I've foolishly purchased in the past.

(Oh, by the way, even if you do get the printer to print off this device running under Windows7, the fax and scanner functions will not work under Windows7, so your "multifunction" device will be, at best, only a "unifunction" device.)

Did I mention that Linksys support on this device is pretty much worthless, which is quite consistent with my experience with Linksys in the past.

Bottom line. Do not purchase the WPSM54G if you are planning to run it under Windows7! The money you "save" will not be enough to cover the cost of your hair-replacement surgery.

UPDATE: Okay folks, after many, many tries, and retries, after about 6 hours of struggle, I was finally able to get this device to work running under Windows7. Unfortunately, because all my attempts were totally based on repetitive trial and error, I simply cannot say exactly what I did that made it work. Here's what I think worked: First, make sure you have the print driver for your printer installed on your computer. If you have made any previous attempts to install the print server software, make sure to disinstall the print server software from your machine. Reset the print server, by holding in the reset button with an unbent paperclip, while powering on the print server device. Continue to hold down the reset button for 10 seconds after power up, which will reset the print server. Unplug the print server. Unplug your printer. Download the firmware update and setup update from the Linksys website. With the print server still tunred off, connect the CAT5 network cable to the print server on one end and your router on the other end. With your printer off and with the print server still off, connect the USB cable from your printer to the print server. Power on the print server. Power on your printer. Open a browser window on your networked computer. Type in the IP address 192.168.1.70, which will bring up a login box for web based admin page for managing the print server. A popup asks for a login name and password. Leave the login name blank and enter "admin" without quotes, in the password. Hit enter, and the web based application for managing the print server should open. Click the "wireless" then the "security" tab and enter your network name and security details. Save. Next click the "status tab." And click the button to upgrade the firmware to the new version you downloaded. Exit the web based print server application, close your browser window. Next install the setup software that you downloaded, and when doing so, be sure to run the verions of setup.exe that is located in the "utility" folder of the download setup files. Follow the prompts. I believe this is the process that worked for me. If you get hung up and need to restart, be sure to reset the print server and uninstall the software with each new attempt. After a few attempts, you might get lucky like I did. But if you haven't already bought this device, save yourself some trouble and just buy something else.

Whew! 5 hours and it's finally working. Mine is a mixed household of PC and Mac. Running OSX and Windows 7 made this install a bit complicated. Linksys created install software for this device that is not kept current. I had to install it from Windows XP running on Bootcamp on my Mac because it is not supported on Windows 7. No updated downloadable installs that I could find. If you are thinking about purchasing this, be careful that the printer that you intend to use is on the short list of supported devices. I have a Brother Print/Copy/Scan that will only Print/Copy with this device. The install instructions are only useful if you are running outdated OS on a PC. I wouldn't discourage you from purchasing this item if you don't mind a bit of setup and you only want to print wirelessly from multiple devices, but don't pay more than $60 for it. Once the Printserver was part of my home network, I may as well have thrown the disk it came with away. I connected to the printer through IP on OSX and Control Panel Settings on Win7.

Nothing ever seems to work the first time, but this did! I am using it with an HP LaserJet 3050 printer, and can print from a Windows XP laptop (connected via Ethernet cable to the router, and over the internet using the IP address), and from a Windows 7 HP Touchsmart, connected wirelessly to the network. I used the installation CD with the laptop, taking the default settings, and it worked the first time. I was then able to use Add Printer on the Windows 7 machine to find and select the print server. I was skeptical about how easy this would be, having spent a lot of time plugging and unplugging and rebooting and crawling around on the floor in the past, but this really did work the first time. Cheap and easy, love it!

As a longtime user of the HP JetDirect spooler for my old HP 5P, this box had a lot to live up to. I configured the JetDirect about 7 years ago and literally have not touched it. No issues. Well, I've had the IOGear print server up for 10 days now and I've had no issues. Setup could not have been simpler. Using a D-Link DIR-655, the print server was assigned an IP address. I "told" my Mac what printer was located at that IP address (look in the router's config panel to determine the IP of the server) and I was off and printing. I had attempted to use the built-in USB sharing port on the DIR -655, but the interface is clumsy and essentially "claims" the device during the printing process. The IOGear server, however, makes the printer appear as a regular network printing device and will allow multiple machines to spool to the IP without issue. I'm using two new iMacs, and Airbook, an XP laptop, and a Vista box. All the boxes "see" the printer.

Get this. It works. At least for me!

Purchased this IOGear GPS21U to replace a NetGear PS121 print server that malfunctioned 95% of the time. The GPS21U works flawlessly. I have this print server on the home network hanging off the router and have an XP laptop, an XP box, a Win7 box, and a dual boot Vista/Linux laptop connecting via wireless. So far all work except the XP box (I think it needs "other" attention though).

Set up on the first box was pretty straightforward. For subsequent computers, I had to dig out the IP and port information and express it in a way that each OS could understand. That made the installation rather tedious. The installation CD was reasonably useful for the subsequent Windows machines if you knew what to put in for the IP and port. The Linux job was strictly seat-of-the-pants, but I got it on the first try (so given my admin skills it can't be that bad).

The printer is a Brother HL2140 laser printer. So, since this is not a really expensive high-end printer, this is a good product match.

Well this little box delivers. First off I haven't, nor probably won't use it for as a Web Server. I've set it up solely as a NAS device. It more than rocks for the $135 (after tax &shipping) I paid to meet my singular usage of it.

First off if you don't know how to setup a small network you shouldn't be buying a NAS for storage. They normally aren't very easy to setup especially if your using RAID. After setup they are normally No to Low maintenance. The Fusion setup is very easy for a NAS and I don't believe it will require much maintenance if any. I had the firewall/antivirus problem mentioned by another reviewer, but that should be expected when setting up any networking or web interacting software. After that it was smooth sailing.

It's isn't quiet but not near as loud as most simple NAS's. The add -on USB ports so far work well with my Seagate Freeagent Drives. I had to reformat to these drives to FAT32, but well worth it to clear up desk and cable clutter. Easy and near instant data access is a huge plus also.

I'll certainly will be buying more of these!

The Fusion installation CD didn't detect the drive until I turned off my Windows Firewall. Of course, this wasn't mentioned anywhere in the setup guide. Don't try to load a directory with more than a few high resolution (5 megapixel or more) photos, or it will take FOREVER to generate the thumbnails. The drag-and-drop popup Java applet file import is very slow to import (even over Gigabit ethernet), and dropping a folder into it doesn't create the folder with the files underneath it; instead, it just puts all the files into the root directory. VERY DISAPPOINTED in what had the potential to be a useful product. If you have 1-2 Megapixel photos or small documents, in just a few small directories, maybe this will work for you, but for $700? You can do better.

I bought the Fusion Drive as soon as it was available from JR. I'm really impressed with the ease of set up, the utility of the drive and software, and all around look of the drive. The instructions are clear and the setup wizard takes you through how to set up a dynamic dns, how to set up your router, and all of the other details that would usually require some real technical know how. The important thing is to follow the instructions closely.

One very important think to keep in mind when setting up the drive: if you have VOiP, make sure the internet phone device is hooked up to your router; usually companies ask you to hook the phone to your cable modem, and then your router to the phone; this makes port forwarding unusable. So other than this minor reconfiguring of your internet connection, everything works seamlessly.

I imagine the interface and the look (and the choices of looks) will develop over time, but I have to say I've been very impressed with how well everything has been working (I've tried out the software from home from a remote location), and most important, how stable everything is. I'm doing everything from a Mac, and I always worry if enought testing has been done to ensure Mac compatibility, and so far, everything's been fine. I also like the fact that Maxtor has included USB 2.0 ports for future expansion. It's a steep price, but I recomment this drive to everyone in the market for a NAS drive.

It's been a few days since these were announced and we've already installed 30 of them here at Macminicolo. (We host them as servers in our data center.) Here is what you need to know:

1) The image above is not correct (as of 6/18/10). This mini does not have an optical drive and instead has two hard drives. You can use optical drives of other Macs on your network though.

2) The two drives total 1TB. YOu can use them separate or in RAID configurations. New in this version are the 7200RPM drives (up from 5400 in the last version.

3) Apple now officially supports 8GB of RAM in these minis. Eight GB was unofficially supported in the last version, but did work fine.

4) These minis are quiet, don't get hot, and use hardly any power. Amazing build and design went into this machine.

5) If you buy this mini and want to upgrade the RAM, Apple has made it very easy. Just twist the bottom and put in the RAM. No tools required.

6) This Mac mini comes with an unlimited license of Snow Leopard Server. No yearly seat costs, not license per user. Totally unlimited.

7) The SD card slot can read SDXC. That's not a big deal now,but will definitely be so in the future. That standard can support up to 2TB. So, as that technology comes, this mini will be future proof. (In Theory, this means you could have 3TB of data in this mini. Incredible.)

8) The video card has been upgraded and is a great addition.

9) The power brick is now inside the Mac mini. (It used to be a huge white brick nearly the size of the mini itself.) This is very much welcome.
So overall, great machine. Nice to see the nice new look.

The Linksys Wireless-G PrintServer with Multifunction Printer Support lets you connect a multifunction USB printer directly to your network, eliminating the need to dedicate a PC to print sharing chores. Using a PrintServer frees up your print share PC so you don\'t have to leave it on all the time. It also removes the printing bottleneck, and sets your PC free to do more useful work.

The PrintServer is compatible with most USB multifunction printers, and allows full access to printing, faxing, scanning, and copying functions. Like any print server, users on the network can print anytime. The other functions are treated a little differently -- any user can request access to one of the other functions, and get exclusive use of that function until his task is complete.

Connect the PrintServer directly to your network by 10/100 Ethernet cable, or wirelessly at up to 54Mbps via Wireless-G. The wireless option lets you put your printer wherever you want to, without having to run cables. Whichever way the PrintServer is attached to your network, both your wireless and wired PCs will have access to it, and the printer it\'s connected to. And if you don\'t use wireless for general networking in your office, you can still use the Wireless-G connection in ad-hoc mode to print from visiting Wireless-G and Wireless-B PCs.

Your wireless data is protected by up to 128-bit WPA-PSK encryption. A user-friendly Setup Wizard makes installation easy, the compact case fits anywhere, and the big print buffer handles even large graphics

Took some time to get working, but was using a Mac. Needed to use parallels and windows for set up, but using in Mac-based network.

This experience with this product was very frustrating. Support from the manufacturer was with someone who had weak language skills and provided little information. I bought a new printer because the support informed me that my printer was not compatible with the firmware. AFter i bought & set up a new printer,i learned that i could download a new firmware that would make my printer compatible. Thanks for nothing!

Not bad at all! Scanning must be done through the HTML interface, if you multifunction printer is supported. It saves the image to your Hard Drive. It has allowed us to print from any computer in the house (except the one running Ubuntu) and that is why I got it! Yay!

I have owned this print server for about three years now. Each time I change my router I dread having to touch this print server. It is finicky with all the required steps that have been written here before. I work in IT and each time I touch this thing, it's a multiple day adventure and will then just start working one day for no apparent reason - FUN!! When you do get it working, it will just stop working for no reason and require a reset. Do yourself a real favor and just buy a printer with a wireless adapter... or if you really enjoy pain, just hit your head with a hammer - it's cheaper.

I love this unit. I purchased this over 1 1/2 years ago and it is still running 24/7/365. From what I remember, setting up the unit wasn't that difficult. I did hook up the unit directly to my computer via Ethernet to set up the unit for the first time. After that, it was smooth sailing via those WiFi waves... The web interface D-Link uses is a familiar one that I've used on other D-Link products.

I use this unit to provide wireless printer services to two USB printers; The Samsung CLP-315 color laser and a Brother QL-570 label printer. Both printers work just fine. The Samsung CLP-315 control panel really doesn't work in this configuration, though. (I'm assuming it requires bi-directional communications via USB.) However, the Samsung CLP-315 printer driver works great with the unit. I can print anything easily under Windows Vista. Ditto for the Brother QL-570 printer driver; I am easily able to print PayPay shipping labels through this D-Link unit.

As a result, both printers are in another room, hidden away from view, and not cluttering up my computer desk. Gotta love that minimalistic look! I do not have a multi-function printer or a dedicated scanner to try out the scanning fuctions of the D-Link unit. The only nitpick is that I have a 802.11N network running, and this unit only runs on the 802.11'G' spectrum.

This product uses the ID 192.168.0.1 which is the same as my home hetwork system. Therefore, the ID of the TrendNet product had to be changed. It took two days and four separate levels of technical support to finally get this unit to be recognized by my system. Simply changing the last digit to an unused number did not suffice. It finally became necessary to create a new TCP/IP port in order to access the print server.

I believe the instructions should provide a more complete installation information package.
This is not a unit that I would recommend for a person who is not very technically competent. It does work okay, however...

Although this product is not the most user friendly to set up, you can't beat the price compared to the Linksys device that will run you over $ 100.00 new, the very key thing to make this product work with your router, printer and computer is changing the IP address to 192.168.1.50, I almost gave up myself even when I talked to technical support, you have to change the I address in the software not on the website first.

This is a fairly basic print server with both Wired & Wireless capabilities. However, it is not exactly a simple plug it in, turn it on, and print sort of deal. It's a little more complex, but with some basic understanding of networks it's simple enough to get to work. After configuring the print server for my network & printer I still had an issue where it would not even print test pages from the device. However, this was easily fixed by changing the printer speed from High to Low for my LaserJet 6P.

I found the included software very lame and didn't work exactly correct under Win7 x64. I was able to get everything working by manually installing the printer.
1) Devices & Printers > Add a Printer
2) Add a LOCAL printer (You must select Local and NOT networked.)
3) Create a new port: Standard TCP/IP Port
4) Type the IP address you manually assigned the print server when you set it up.
The Port name can be whatever you want it to be. In my case I named it" LaserJet6P"
5) Select the correct printer driver. In my case I had to click "Update Windows" to have Win7 look for new printer drivers before I listed the correct one. If updating doesn't find the driver you require consult the manufacturer's website to acquire a Windows 7 driver for it.
6) Finish up and you should be good to go once it finished installing.

I brought this to replace a D-Link DP-311P that was driving a friend's Epson POS kitchen printer in his restaurant. The D-Link unit was trashed when the printer fell onto the floor, landing wireless printserver down.

Setting this unit up over a wired RJ45 connect was much more convenient than the ad hoc wireless setup on the old D-Link. I was a little befuddled at first, but eventually realized that the TrendNet unit kind of "fakes" being a Windows PC that the target printer is attached to, where the D-Link was more of a bridge.

Since the Epson POS printer used the standard GENERIC driver, I didn't need to install the printer driver on each machine on the network. But if this one fails, I'll replace the parallel card in the Epson with a USB interface and go with a more mainstream print server.
