Well, when I decided to buy this I had gone through some of the reviews, but apparently not enough negative ones. The negative ones that say about the monitor basically dying and turning itself off is exactly what is happening to me, and rather than having it for a year I've only had it for 2-3 months.

The first monitor that came to me would not turn on no matter what I did (I also used my own power cable in case it was just that with no success). So I returned it and decided to have them just replace it... which I am now regretting. Since moving in to a new apartment it has decided when it wants to turn itself off. Even when I am in the middle of using my computer (looking on the internet, etc) it'll just go black and turn itself off. I wasn't sure if it was because I only had it connected via Analog (because my computer is older and doesn't have Digital), but it sounds like this is not uncommon for this monitor. It just totally sucks that mine decided to turn to crap after 2 months.

I haven't decided what I'm going to do about it because the other reviews that said they called Samsung directly sounded like they had limited success... but I also don't want to blow the money that I spent on this goodbye.

So overall... DON'T buy this!

I love this thing. It puts my older flat panel to shame (they live next to each other for now). The stand is a bit flimsy and the screen is ridiculously bright, even with the settings toned down. I'm using dynamic contrast for now. Some websites that are rendered in darker colors tend to make the monitor switch to a very lowly-lit contrast setting which can be annoying. Might have to go back to a standard contrast. Overall, this monitor is great though. Oh, to whomever complained about the blue led at the base of the monitor... get real. It's barely noticeable, even while sitting on a reflective glass table. I don't even notice it at all anymore.

This is a very nice monitor with high quality features. I've had this monitor for a couple months now and I am extremely pleased with the wide screen that this monitor has. Viewing multiple applications is a breeze. This monitor has a 21.5 inch viewing. It also has 1080 full high definition resolution which means that I am able to see more applications at one time. The picture is extremely clear. The colors contrast is brilliant and bright. I can also open multiple applications and set them side-by-side and when viewing pictures and video I am able to see more of the picture using this 21.5 Samsung high-definition widescreen monitor. This monitor is stylish with a shiny black polished frame. It is slim which allows you to have more room on your desktop. The monitor sits on a polished black glass stand. It also tilts backwards and forwards for easy viewing. The function buttons are located on the side of the monitor. The monitor is very durable and sturdy. Overall this is a middle of the road monitor with a high end function. The quality is great and the price was reasonable.

This monitor offers great resolution and dynamics for viewing a variety of information including live television and internet video. Both text and graphics is easy to view at the high resolution. Only thing that would make it better is incorporated USB jacks and speakers.

I picked this viewsonic up just before i was about to by a Samsung that was an inch smaller for the same price. I had a used 19" veiwsonic before this but it just went black on me one day. I looked up the problem and its a common malfunction in LCD's so i didn't hold that against VS. The only reason I'm rating this a 4 and not a 5 is because it came with a single dead pixel, not that big a deal because i can't see it unless I'm on a sold white background and then only when I'm really looking for it.

All in all a good buy for the price.

I wanted to add an external screen to use with my Macbook. This screen has met all my expectations and I am very happy with it. For the price, you get a product that performs it's job well. I don't do anything fancy with it (photo retouching etc) so I can't comment to its capabilities in those areas, but as a basic computer monitor, it just plain works.

This is the first of two recently purchased Viewsonic screens, both 1080p and both are great, and the price of less than $200 is the best around. the picture quality is a little shy of the more expensive screens but in almost no cases will you really noticed the difference. At first I was dissapointed since there was a back along the sides and could not make the monitor to the display the full screen, but finally I got the way to solve it and if you have an ATI graphics card you'll need to investigate to resolve this issue. Picture quality is great, it's thin, light, elegant.
The only cons are: 1) they should include an HDMI to HDMI cable that is not bundled with monitor and 2) the stand is so poorly designed that makes the monitor to be tilted and looks unstable.

Conclusion: great deal.

First of all I have to thank M. Vaughn for his review! I have been admiring my new MS238H for most of the day now. I ordered it yesterday "late" and received it today, less than 24 hrs for only 3.99 thanks to the prime deal. What a world huh, only in America they say. Anyways, M. vaughns review was the first one online and I thought I would read it again because I had that familiar 1 inch black picture frame aswell. Lucky for me I already had the catalyst control center installed on my machine. I was still able to bring it up, move it to the right, read the review and make the proper adjustments. When my screen magically went out, Like I had it on a string instantly i couldn't help but to do it over and over hahaha finally resting it on its outer limits! Not only did his review help me decide on this monitor, it was helpful in the finishing touches I needed to get the full benefits of the lil Black devil. I've been on hulu half the day in amazement of the quality I am receiving now on videos, WOW!!!! I designed and built automated machinery for 15 years, so the instructions hit the floor as soon as I saw the size of the font. The lil black piece that pops of with your finger nail, goes right back on after you install the circle rest with your thumb and index finger. Readers may find that lining up the triangle of pegs on the circle rest is ASUS's way of keeping you from damaging the thumb screw provided to lock down the rest. just lign up the rectangular male guides into the female slots when reapplying the black cover, Its a snap and your finsihed with setup. I loved the packaging and the cables provided too, nothing but sexy in my book. Also, some folks who don't know, that when running full resolution of 1920 x 1080 your desktop icons and fonts will get too small for some folks. All you have to do to make these bigger keeping the resolution we all want is right click on your desktop, choose properties! Then go to settings, click on advanced and change your DPI settings to 125% and you'll be right back in the game again. You can make this larger if you need to grandpa, its cool. If your into Hulu or watching TV and videos on the net. Definetly change your settings there in the Vid window too 480, most are set on 320. WOW I love love love it. I have been running an ASUS motherboard for years now. Asus has really hit a homerun with this product. I really feel sorry for those people who had bad luck or Karma with their Asus experience, hard to beleive them if you ask me. Some people complain about peanut butter and Jelly though, so I suppose it takes all kinds here. Don't look past this product if your here buy it and be happy. Thanks again to M. Great product, the LED backlighting is a revelation! I replaced an aging Samsung 20" 204b with this Asus, and after a month or so I am STILL not used to the monitor not sitting at 90 degrees to the desk! The least amount of pressure on the bezel allows it to lean back, making image quality suffer. I am not a videophile so I can't comment on the latest Hi-Def movie displaying on it, nor am I a geek gamer who sits up all night playing games, I just USE it as a monitor, and for that its GREAT except for the stand. I had been looking for an LED backlit monitor and was browsing Amazon from 34,000' on Friday when I ran across this one. After reading the reviews I decided to order one and chose 1 day shipping ($3.99 with Amazon Prime for Saturday Delivery! Gotta love it)

Received the monitor at 10:30am Saturday and plugged it right into my computer.

First, while I didn't need the cables this is the first monitor I ever purchased which came with everything one needed to hook it up. DVI to HDMI and VGA.

The power cable is plenty long enough and is similar to many laptop power cables with external power supply.

The stand works well for my implementation but it is definitely not versatile enough for everyone.

Right out of the box I really liked the color but I ran my X-rite monitor calibration tool and the before and after colors are only very slightly different. This monitor has individual RGB controls so you will be able to get an accurate calibration.

I didn't find the touch controls sensitive enough and they were a bit of a pain to work but I was able to muddle through it.

The size is great for Photoshop leaving plenty of real estate. I may even replace my second monitor (dual monitor setup) because I really like this one and the price is outstanding.

Moved up from a 17" Samsung so this monitor has ALOT of real estate for the eye.

Pros: Very Sharp, good colors, Solid blacks, very adjustable. All at a very nice price point.

Cons: Viewing angle both vertical and horizontal is disappointing. Really need to be looking straight at it or the screen begins to fade. Samsung touch controls are stupid.

Well worth it if you are looking to upgrade to a bigger screen

I was really hesitant in ordering a monitor online because of the issues with dead pixels... Amazon nor Azus will exchange the monitor unless it has more than 8 dead pixels!

This monitor is great. As expected from other reviews, the color/brightness/contrast factory settings are somewhat off though they might be acceptable to some users. I tweaked the settings as recommended by J. Raymond in his review and everything is very good. The instructions that came with the monitor were nominal and I had to play with the menu selections a little to make the adjustments. Have had the monitor for 5 weeks and have not touched the settings since setting it up. The DVI cable that came with the monitor is about 6 feet which was somewhat tight for me so I ordered a 10 foot cable that works fine. I definitely recommend this monitor so far.

This monitor is a great value - giving you a large screen with a crystal-clear hi-definition image for a relatively low price. I bought this to go with a new Gateway desktop. The internet looks great, DVDs look great, and high-def TV looks fantastic. I've given this a 5-star review despite the built-in speakers, which are adequate for ordinary TV viewing in a relatively quiet room, but not nearly what you need for enjoying your music collection or internet radio. For the price, though, I didn't expect much of the speakers so I wasn't at all disappointed with this.

As someone else mentioned, there aren't any extra USB ports on the monitor, so you can't plug your mouse, keyboard or other peripherals directly into it. With my setup this doesn't matter all all.

I've been using it several days and it is a great monitor for the price. Display is sharp and fast. For VGA connection, the hookup needed no adjustment for my taste. HDMI hookup did need adjustment. My desktop image would not fill the entire screen (about an inch border) until I stretched it. There may be a different/better way to do this but I haven't found it yet. Stretching caused no apparent distortion.

The monitor has some adjustable features that allow fine tuning. I haven't gone through these yet, but I can say that the built in speakers weren't that good for me right out of the box. I suspected this would be the case before I bought it. Not an issue for me.

I bought a 2710m from Amazon. It's being returned. I bought a second 2710m from Amazon. It's being returned. First off, Amazon was very willing to take back the units--as Amazon has always been. Second, the good news is that every feature on the monitor which I have tried so far has worked well. The picture quality--and I do a lot of photography work--seems very good. The bad news is something very silly which got past HP. There is one of those nice adhesive advertising stickers on the top flange of the unit--tells you useful things like it is a 27 inch monitor, response time, contrast ratio etc. When my first unit arrived, I carefully attempted to peel it off. About one fourth of the way through, the sticker started leaving adhesive blobs on the flange. By 1/3 of the way across, the printed layer of the sticker separated from the adhesive, and the adhesive remained on the monitor. For several hours I attempted to carefully rub the adhesive off with my finger--it would have taken a year or two, if ever. Rather than attempting any sort of liquid, a no-no with LCDS, I notified Amazon and they agreed to take it back. They shipped a second unti a few days later. This time, my very careful wife attempted to remove the sticker with the same results. Calls to HP reached India and yielded no real help as the agent there suggested water, then glass cleaner, then alcohol, none of which worked and quite possibly poisoned the display integrity. Teh agent did bverify that consistent with the photos and manual that the sticker is supposed to be peeled off. Amazon kindly agreed by phone (866-216-1072) to take the second unit back, and they are shipping me a Samsung instead.

Both units were manufactured in May 2010, and I received them in early June 2010. I suspect this is a problem with an early run of the sticker which will hopefully be quickly corrected by HP. Maybe the QC folks didn't try peeling any of the stickers. If you don't care about staring at adhesive smudges on your new unit or don't mind leaving the feature sticker in place, my comments are not meaningful. But if you do, I'd wait a while for HP to clear the problem. And I'd recommend Amazon pull the product till they verify the extent of the problem and make sure they sell no units which have the defective sticker. Otherwise I suspect they will get quite a few returns.

I wanted to use a large monitor for my computer and initially purchased a Panasonic TC-L32S1 32 inch IPS lcd tv for this purpose based on recommendations out on the web. That TV was way to large to properly read documents and browse the web, no matter how fun it might have been to use for games. The pixel pitch is very important and sitting at a distance of 3 feet from a 32 inch tv does not work, as the pixels seem way to big. I wanted to find a better option that was a little smaller and this 27 inch monitor seems to be the perfect size. I sit about 2 feet away from it and even though it is considerably smaller than the 32 inch tv, it still feels MUCH larger than the 23 inch samsung monitor I also own.

I've been using this monitor for a week now and have noticed the following:

The native resolution is NOT too small for this size of screen. Some people complain that 1920 x 1080 is too little of a resolution for anything over a 23/24 inch monitor. I also use a laptop with a 17 inch screen with a 1920 x 1200 resolution and text on it can seem very small due to the small pixel pitch. After using this 27 inch monitor with a much larger pixel pitch, I can tell you that if you sit at normal distance from this monitor, you will not "notice each pixel" because of their larger size. Text looks large and sharp, but not lacking in detail. Of course, if you get very close to the screen you can see each pixel, but the monitor is meant to sit 2 feet away from you or more. At this distance, the resolution of 1920 x 1080 is more than enough for this size of a monitor.

The glossy screen finish on the monitor makes colors pop a lot, but might bother you if you have windows or lights behind you. I wanted a glossy screen monitor because I have no issue with the reflections of a glossy screen and prefer the pop that glossy screens give to colors. Direct sun light hitting the screen from the side is not much of an issue, as the anti-glare properties work pretty well. However, the screen can still be very reflective of things behind you. The brightness setting on the monitor should be set to half of the default setting, which is blindingly bright out of the box.

Response times on the monitor aren't the best I've experienced (even though listed at 2.5 ms) but are still decent. The low response times can only be achieved by turning on the "Video Overdrive" option, which is turned off by default. I have it on and did notice the motion blur decrease slightly on some motion tests. It is good enough to play games such as first person shooters, but its not the best performer I've seen in this department.

The black level produced by the monitor is not very dark, but the perceived contrast caused by the pop of the colors makes it a very pleasing image. The brightness setting on the monitor seems to only change the strength of the backlight instead of the brightness of the picture, so no matter what brightness setting you use, the black level stays pretty consistent.

The dynamic contrast ratio setting works very well compared to other TV's and monitors I've owned. It is very slow and gradual in adjusting the backlight depending on the scene instead of quickly changing like older tv's do. This makes it a much more seaming-less transition, much like your eye would behave when going from a very bright place to a darker place. I had it turned on for a little while, but decided to leave it off permanently because the monitor goes back to its blindingly bright backlight setting on bright scenes and it hurts the eyes at night time.

Like other monitors, it has pre-exisinting "Text" and "Movie" settings. These seem to just modify the brightness and contrast settings. I decided to leave mine at "Custom" and use the brightness at 50 and the contrast at 80. Setting the constrast any higher will cause white crush (not showing all the details of the brightest range of colors like white).

The color settings allow you to change between 9300k, 6500k, and sRGB. 9300k seemed way to blue, sRGB seemed a little too red and 6500k seemed the most pleasing. I'm unable properly test for the gamma accuracy, but with the Avia calibration tool, there seemed to be very little difference in the gamma/color accuracy of sRGB and 6500k settings.

You can also adjust the Red, Green, and Blue colors individually for better color accuracy. However, like other monitors, there is no Hue or Color Saturation setting to help you do this easierly (with less accuracy).

The viewing angles for the monitor are limited just like any other TN panel. If you sit in front of the monitor, you won't have an issue with the viewing angles. If you plan to have people using it to watch it from steep angles, you should get a different monitor, as the colors will change a lot if viewed from anywhere besides the center position.

In summary:

Great for:
-Great Pop of colors due to glossy screen
-Good size and easy to read text from at a regular distance
-Decent response times for games with Video Overdrive turned on
-Decent black levels due to the contrast caused by bright colors and glossy screen.
-Sturdy and attractive design (monitor does not wobble much on its stand like other big monitors of this size usually do)

Cons:
-Black levels cannot be adjusted very much and stay pretty much the same because the brightness setting is just the backlight strength.
-Limited viewing angle for accurate colors due to TN panel
-Turning the dynamic contrast setting on leads to the monitor using blindingly bright settings in some scenes.

Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase and recommend this monitor to anyone who is not bothered by regular TN panel viewing angles and want a good pop of color from their monitor. The color reproduction might not be as accurate as an IPS panel, but they are darn pretty and POP much more than any IPS panel I've ever worked with.

I have deployed over ten of these monitors and they all work fine. Basic monitor without any bells and whistles. Screen is bright and colors pop.

The reviewer that posted about the blurry pic is having a technical issue not related to the product. You have to set your computer's resolution to the "native" resolution of your monitor which for this montior is 1366x768. Most people think you can just unplug an old monitor and connect a new one but that is not correct. In their review they stated they had a CRT monitor which is not widescreen and therefore their resolution is probably 1024x768 which is probably causing their issue.

Buy with confidence as these monitors have a three year warranty. I have purchased Acer monitors that required warranty service (they were almost three years old and were on non-stop). The warranty process is pretty straight forward. Go to Acer's warranty site, fill out your information, ship the monitor to a repair center (Texas in my case) and receive the monitor back repaired in about a week.

I invested in a HG281D Hanns-G Plasma to replace my Viewsonic CRT late 2008. It's now May 2010 and I'm beginning to pay for the money I saved over a year ago. Up until now, it's been great, bright vivid colors, the best gaming monitor I've ever played on by far. Unlike a lot of monitors, the screen is not glossy and does a good job at not reflecting light. The darks could be blacker but this is minor and most likely more of a problem with the video quality. The Bright blue power indicator at the bottom right corner can be an annoyance when trying to watch movies in the dark. The inputs of the back are easily accessible and out of the way. The monitor itself feels like a tank, a bit heavy for a flat screen, something I personally liked. I almost forgot there is a built in speaker, this is probably nice if you blow your main speakers or are away without headphones, but overall sound quality is atrocious, 1 of 10. Overall a pretty useless feature I guess. So it's been over two years now and I've began to get horizontal flickering black lines across the screen. Sometimes letting it warm up helps, other times it takes me whackin the top or turning it on and off. I've been told replacing the capacitors will fix the problem, however I've yet to look into it. Regardless of it's short life, it serves its purpose like a champ and looks awesome doing it. Nothing good lasts forever and in the end, you get what you pay for. If the price is worth 2 years of a quality plasma, go for it, otherwise, and I would definitely recommend, considering a more expensive name brand.

This is a good buy and an okay value if you need a big monitor for basic computing. It is less expensive and gives a better view than 2 19" monitors. I bought mine in Oct 2009. I hadn't noticed that the max resolution is rated lower than I expected (varies from model to model) when I bought it, so check that out if you are expecting a high res monitor where you can fit lots of information on your screen. It didn't quite fit everything on the screen I had expected--but even so I was okay with it for the price.

The color on mine is uneven. I kept trying to correct my Photoshop documents until I realized there was a color shift from top to bottom. If you are heavily into graphics work and need consistent color information, this is not the monitor for you.

After about 16 months though, I was really ready to replace it. It makes an intermittant popping noise and also goes black for no apparent reason. Then from after a few seconds up to a few days it just comes back on. I have unplugged it and let it sit for a day as recommended elsewhere on the Internet and that usually DOES NOT work. There are no updated drivers or any actions that seem to improve its performance.

It is an inexpensive product (comparitively speaking) and I got okay service out of it for less time than I would have expected. In better economic times I would buy something else--but I may find myself purchasing another one and hope I can select a more reliable monitor when the next one goes bad in 2012.

I loved this monitor. I work from home and could put up everything I needed all at once on a single screen. I was a happy camper.

Then, one day, it went black. I fiddled with settings. I fiddled with video drivers.. I fiddled with windows settings.. I fiddled with the operating temperature (cooling the room down). The monitor would work for a while, but, eventually (within a period of 5 to 20 minutes) it would simply go black again.
I fiddled for 3 weeks with this...

During my research I found that this is just what this monitor does after you have had it for a tad over a year. I am disappointed that some $2 part is probably at fault.

Now I have a large chunk of electronic junk to dispose of properly.

I picked this up from Woot a few months ago and brought it up to my workplace. I have been using it since then and absolutely love it. While I'm sure there are bigger and better monitors out there, this is a great product! I would definitely buy another one if I ever needed it.

Yes it may have full HD with a 1920x1080 resolution. But what's the point if it will not scale some movies to that resolution? I tried watching The Shining, Matrix and Tombstone in fullscreen with Windows Media Player and it just has a tiny box in the middle of the monitor for the movie in Widescreen and half the Widescreen for movies in Fullscreen. I usually have to make my resolution lower to watch movies made before 2005. Then it just turns up looking stretched. On the flip side newer releases look great and it has an HDMI port for Xbox360/PS3gaming. When it comes to viewing websites the colors are certainly bright. The white on Amazon right now is killing my eyes and the Brightness/Contrast adjustment doesn't seem to help that much. Not to mention the monitor doesn't even have a sharpness control. I have to go into my NVIDIA control panel to change it. But I can't use that when playing the Xbox through the HDMI port. The Internal speakers are nothing to boast about either. Don't bother listening to any kind of Audio if you are more than 10 feet away.

It's an ok monitor but I would purchase an HDTV instead. That way you can watch TV and use it as a monitor.

Got this as a gift.

It's a pretty monitor with great adjustment features. However, I ultimately returned it. Admittedly it was a rushed decision, since I didn't want grief at the return counter.

My objections were that I couldn't get the colors quite right, but most problematic was the glare. I could see my reflection (and that of the room around me) in various solid fields of my computer display. My eyes got a little dizzy switching focus between the screen and the image reflected in the screen. This monitor will be the one I stare at many hours a day, so it needs to feel like worn tennis shoes.

Probably the glare issue would be resolved with a cheap anti-glare screen, but that's like putting plastic over your couch.

This monitor is excellent. It is crystal clear, has good colors, and the speakers are not bad, either. I like that the display is not glossy and does not have problems reflections from the windows. We bought this for our family computer that sits on a desk in our main living area. I purchased this monitor in March and have had no problems with it. It looks good. It was easy to unpack and install. I have no problems with it other than the fact the sound isn't as loud as I would like. I have no problem hearing the sound but when I am playing a music video or song I like to have it up pretty loud but this monitor has the built in speakers and doesn't seem to amplify as much as I would like. If you don't need a louder volume or use the sound for just normal volume levels this monitor is perfect. In the future I would purchase a monitor with the speakers not being built in.

Very nice for text work.

Be sure to use the supplied VGA cable. The ferrite filter cores on the cable ("blobs" near each end) are necessary to maintain signal quality for a sharp display. A plain VGA cable I tried produced very blurry video.

Viewing angle is narrow if you unmount it from the stand and use another stand for portrait mode.

Excellent value.

I ordered this monitor to replace the last CRT in the house. I have a HP L1710 17 inch at work that is great, and the dying CRT was 17 inch so I figured I'd go cheap and get this Acer with free shipping. Also the resolution matched the highest resolution on the old desktop that it is plugged into. I think the 1710 is a slightly better screen, but not so much that it matters. The Acer monitor is just fine, and we have bunches of Acers at work with no problems. The problem for me is that now I wish I would have gone 19 or 20 inch. I had a Viewsonic 20 inch widescreen before, and it quit working on my computer, and for some reason will only work on our Toshiba netbook now, and not on any of the other six computers in the house. Will never buy a Viewsonic product again. Anyway, aside from being too cheap to up the size, I recommend this monitor. By the way, it came with a SVGA cable, which I needed since the old CRT had its cable built in.

the monititor itself is just great. it doesn't say hd on it anywhere and if it isn't it might as well be. the picture is clear, bright and crisp. the problem i have at least with the one i have is the the stupid pain in my ass base stand? the stand keeps coming apart if you move the monitor to wipe and clean the computer desk? it is very irritating and bothersome to put it back together as there is a power cord and a cable connected to it and it is off balanced. major pain in the ass. but like i said the monitor itself is really nice. so just don't move it to clean your desk? lol!

I bought this to go with my new HP computer and it matches perfectly. The picture is crisp and clear. The sound is decent as long as you don't plan on using this screen for an entertainment center. I'm on my third HP laptop/PC system. Generally my purchases have been problem-free, which is why I continued to go back to HP. However, this monitor -- which I am using with the Pavilion 6240 -- has been a problem.

One issue is the integrated speakers, which are weak and lack sound volume & quality, imo.

The second issue is more troubling. The screen picture always needs adjustment, especially after reboots and system changes/tweaks. The picture reverts to a horizontal picture that is slightly off-screen (horizontal right) and an off-kilter clocked image. The image issues are noticeable and require a manual fix, which are some combination of factory resets and auto-adjustment of 1, 2 or 3 clicks. What the exact combination is ... who knows? The combination that works changes from day to day. This is such an irritant.

The image control problem with this monitor is well-known. I just wish I knew about it before making the purchase. I can't wait to replace this monitor, and I will think twice before purchasing HP again.

Love the monitor, HATE the engineering. Works great as a secondary monitor for computer, etc., but if you want to connect any peripheral composite video (RCA) source to this monitor, like a game console or a pro audio device (e.g., a digital keyboard, etc.), you'll be out of luck, and the right adapter will cost you a 'grip'!

We have four (4) different Samsung monitors here in our studio ranging from 20" to 27" and ALL of them have Composite Video (RCA) Inputs, but not this one, so if the opportunity presented itself again, I would NOT buy this monitor, period.

Since day one my monitor has had a problem with a high pitch buzzing. The buzzing comes and goes. I won't hear it for weeks. I purchased my Samsung monitor from Best Buy, and it had a 36 month manufacturer's warranty. At almost exactly 36 months, the monitor started flickering upon startup. I contacted Samsung support via their live chat, and the tech convinced me that it probably wasn't the monitor. (He suggested that it was the computer or the cable.) However, within 2 weeks time, the flickering became continuous. When I determined that it was indeed a monitor problem, I called Samsung support, and guess what? And when I asked to speak to a manager, I was told that the manager was busy, and would return my call within 30 minutes. Surprise, surprise... no call. I use this monitor at work and for the money it gives a great picture. There are two things about it which I find annoying:

1. I use it with my laptop (MacBook Pro) and it is not uncommon for it to lose synchronization when the laptop is left for a while and the monitors are put to "sleep" mode. To resync you need to power the monitor off and on.

2. While the base is removable, the swivel portion is not. If have the monitor mounted to a swing arm Ergotron LX Desk Mount Arm - mounting kit ( 45-179-195 ) and so you see this silly riser sticking out of the bottom of the monitor. This piece comes inserted into the monitor itself and there is nothing in the documentation that describes how it can be removed.

Bottom line: if you want to use this as the only monitor for your workstation and you do not plan to use a monitor mount (desk or wall) other than what comes with the unit this is a good buy. If you plan on using it in any other situation I would keep looking.

I really like this monitor, assembly issues aside. The contrast is excellent. The color/contrast controls are perfect. The monitor is definitely wide enough. The back light is even, except given certain conditions, when you push the brightness too high or low. However, despite my good experiences, I can not give it 5 stars, through the following details, which cause me not to 'love' it:

* Tends to be a bit short in height, with a display of only 768 pixels tall. I didn't know from the website that this was the case. I blame myself for not selecting what I wanted. What I found out is that a 19" regular aspect monitor seems much bigger than an 18.5" widescreen, but you can't do the side-by-side tricks that you can with the latter.

* There is no way to push it past the native resolution, to 1080p. So, I've gotten used to the lower screen size, which is barely tall enough to web browse. The medium-ish resolution makes it easy to read small text, but there is a lot of scrolling--more than normal. I just couldn't install all of my favorite browser toolbars, because I needed every bit of vertical space.

* Watching movies is good, but not superb. You kind of have to sit right in front of the monitor to see anything. But, it's widescreen, a plus.

* I have already considered getting a more upscale monitor, after 6 months of using this one, but I didn't want to waste this purchase. So I'm 'stuck' with it, until I can figure out who needs mine on the cheap.

In conclusion, I can definitely rely on the Samsung brand in the future and I'll get a more upscale model that has 5-star potential, from them, in the future.

After reading dozens of reviews on this site and others, as well as viewing the monitor in person in 3 different stores, I purchased this monitor this afternoon. First off, the Dynamic Contrast spec has been bumped up from 15K:1 to 50K:1, and it shows. Really great punch, yet very natural looking colors, text really pops off the screen. And no dead pixels (yay!).

Also, the monitor base now comes partially pre-assembled. The "egg-shaped" part and the stem or post is already attached - now all that's needed is to screw the actual base onto the stem/post, with an attached folding-key type thumbscrew - all done in less than 30 seconds. Not exactly the widest range of tilt is available, but sufficient.

One warning for those who might be visually comparing monitors in stores - first, request that the monitor being considered be taken off a slide-show or other demo-mode visual, just request to see the standard desktop. Check the text beneath the icons for sharpness, ghosting, color fringes, etc. Also, bear in mind that multi-monitor feeds (a whole string of displays showing the same thing) introduce a great deal of line loss, severely diminshing display sharpness and clarity. And second, at least with Windows 7, the Clear Type text adjustment can make a HUGE difference in text clarity. Be sure and run this adjustment upon installation of the new monitor.

After trying HP's 2009m and 2338h (the first was excellent but overpriced IMHO and the second exhibited horribly uneven backlight spill in the lower right area of the screen), Dell's IN1910N (yuck!) and Asus' VH232H (excellent, but too big for my desktop), at $100 (OD in-store sale from flyer), this one's the charm!

The monitor is fine once you are able to attach the base to the monitor. Both my husband and I struggled with the assembly and the misleading directions. Samsung customer service was useless. During the first call I was told they cannot stay on the phone to guide us through the process and we should refer to the directions on the disk that came with the unit. I reminded her that seeing the disk required the use of the monitor which was not yet functioning. During the second call they admitted they had no practical assembly experience - they had only the info available to the customers. Finally, our son, who is a genius, figured out a way that made much more sense than any of the company's suggestions. He popped the egg-shaped part of the base into the monitor and then assembled the two base parts. Whew!

ASUS monitor model VW246H, date of manufacture April 2010. Monitor performs acceptably well in higher-resolution modes.

In the standard default VGA text mode that is used by boot loaders, BIOS setup, and other software that needs maximum compatibility with "lowest common denominator" hardware, the Aspect Control menu option is grayed out and inoperable. This problem also occurs in the standard VGA resolution of 640x480. The impact is that these standard, legacy 4:3 display modes are always stretched horizontally to the width of the widescreen monitor, which is not the correct aspect ratio for these modes, and there is no option to display them correctly.

In a similar but slightly older ASUS monitor (model VK246H, date of manufacture October 2008) it was possible to work around this problem by setting the Aspect Control in a higher-resolution mode. The setting made in the other mode would then somehow "stick" in the lower-resolution modes. Unfortunately, this workaround did not work on the newer monitor.

When asked about a workaround for this problem, ASUS Customer Service stated the following:

"640X480 is not a routine resolution. Most of the functions cannot work in such a low resolution."

"The issue is really casued 640*480. 640*480 is not usual resolution for operation. Aspect control is disabled at 640*480."

This problem would seem to be solvable with a firmware update, but there is no update available at this time, and there won't likely be one in the future if ASUS does not agree that this is a defect. This monitor therefore is not recommendable for users with older PCs, users who work with boot loaders or BIOS setup, users of classic low-res video games, or users who value VGA compliance.

I've had this monitor for about a week now and I consider it one of the smartest buys I've made in a while. I've got my computer hooked up with VGA. It looks good for text and general use at 1360X768. One feature I like is the 4:3 aspect control on the menu if you are using an older game or an application that wasn't designed for widescreen. It just puts black bars on the sides. I also have my xbox360 hooked up via HDMI and it's great for gaming. I don't have a device that uses DVI input so I can't comment on its quality. The display speakers actually sound pretty good, but they're not quite loud enough. you need to set it to 100 just to hear anything. fortunately you can output your sound to whatever speakers you have which is a good feature. One thing i noticed is that out of the box this display is on the "bright" side. All i did was bump the brightness down a few notches and I was satisfied with the picture. However there are plenty of color settings to play with if you need to get that picture juuuust right, i'm sure you'll find a setting you like.
bottom line: $219 is a pretty good deal for "24 of good looking picture. buy this

Purchased this monitor a few days ago to "upgrade" from my 20" Dell Ultrasharp 2005FPW. The ONLY reason I decided to upgrade is because I felt the screen size was too small. Here are my initial thoughts:

PROS:
- Much bigger than a 20"! (Although after a few days it doesn't seem so big anymore)
- Cheap (Inexpensive)! (I was surprised lcd prices have gone down so drastically the last few years. I paid almost $500 for my Dell 5 years ago)
- 1080p! (Dell was close but wasn't true 1080p)
- No dead pixels! (My Dell had one dead pixel on arrival and had to exchange it)
- No tax and fast free shipping from Amazon (Arrived 4 days after I ordered. Not bad for free shipping)

CONS:
- Base is FLIMSY (Base is just a piece of circular plastic. The Dell base was plastic on the outside but had metal weights on the inside to hold it down. This monitor is extremely wobbly when I press the power button)
- Not height adjustable (The Dell was height adjustable. This one sits pretty low although I'll admit its actually a perfect height for my sitting position)
- Color, contrast, brightness need to be adjusted! (This was a huge con for me. On my Dell, I NEVER had to adjust anything. The Dell seemed to be calibrated MUCH better out of the box. Even after adjusting this monitor, I cannot get it to a similar calibration as the Dell.)
- No USB connections (My Dell had 2 on the monitor)
- Horrible viewing angles (My Dell was a near perfect 180/180 viewing angle. If you're at a slight angle on this monitor, colors get distorted pretty fast)
- Amazon shipped without double boxing. I was pretty amazed no one had stolen the box from my front door. It was clearly marked ASUS and 24" LCD Monitor everywhere with ASUS taping. Pretty obvious what was inside)

I already knew of a few of the CONS before I purchased. Initially, I didn't think they would be a big deal and I thought I could live with it for half the cost of a Dell 24" Ultrasharp. I decided on this monitor based on all the positive reviews from Newegg. Now, I feel like I have taken a step back with this monitor. For me, in car terms, it is like trading in a small German car for a bigger Japanese car. Just not in the same league. Next time, I'll stick with Dell.

This review is for an ASUS VW246H 24" monitor, written on Jun 20, 2010 purchased for around $225 with shipping. I've had it for a week now. The view area is 11 13/16" H by 21" W. You can comfortably view two 8.5x11 text documents side by side. The picture is superb, crisp and bright. Videos look great. Text looks great. The stand tilts but can't adjust height. The front controls are cheapy and would probably break if you used them everyday. Of course once you have it set (and the preset environments are great but plenty of manual control if you want it), no need to touch them. Has power-saver mode when computer is off. Has 3 video interfaces in the back - hdmi, dvi and vga and speaker-in plug. The built in speakers are mounted in the back at the top. Sounds good but soft. Never will replace external speakers for good sounds. I would not hesitate in purchasing another one.

I did a lot of research before selecting this monitor. I trust the Asus brand having used their mother boards to build PCs. The monitor was in perfect condition right out of the box. The first thing that strikes you is how light it is compared to the old CRT monitors. Installation is simple. Fine tuning via the front buttons was intuitive and easy. This is a large monitor that is bright, crisp, with excellent colors. I really appreciate the large screen territory for multiple windows. I use the included DVI cable as I already have excellent speakers and have no need to use the monitor speakers. That means there is no need to use an HDMI or speaker cables. Excellent product, you won't be disappointed.

This monitor is great for the price and setup was super easy. It's nothing really fancy but it has a great picture and I don't do anything special on my computer that would require me to have a high-end monitor. The size is great for watching DVDs or video online, although it can be a little awkward for web browsing. I have separate speakers so I haven't heard the sound from the monitor's speakers. Good purchase!

Excellent monitor for the price, fits perfectly on the desk in my workspace. As others mentioned, the built-in speakers aren't of the best quality but are perfectly suitable for listening to music while working or playing a computer game. Haven't watched any movies yet, but am sure I could do so without many complaints. Besides, I bought the monitor for the quality of screen rather than speakers (I kind of view them as a perk since it allows for more room on my desk).

The price is right on this monitor and that's about it. The picture quality is fuzzy and awful in the native resolution. There is a large amount of flickering at window borders and in certain types of textures. I have an old Samsung 170T side by side with this display that looks so much better, and it is from 5 years ago. It doesn't have any of these problems on the same images (running them in dual display mode).

Games look awful. Windows desktop looks awful. Everything looks terrible on this monitor. It actually hurts my eyes to look at it. It is one of the worst LCD displays I have ever seen.

So I ordered a replacement because I thought maybe mine was simply defective. The replacement send by Amazon was completely broken. It didn't even turn on. Amazon did not pack this well enough, and I could tell the monitor was bouncing around inside while it shipped. I'm not sure if it broke on the way, or if Asus send Amazon a broken product. I suspect the latter.

Now I have two monitors, one of which is completely broken, the other of subpar quality, and I want neither of them.

Terrible product. Stay away from this monitor, and in my opinion, stay away from Asus products, in general, if this product is any indication of their quality.

I've been using this monitor with its "out of the box" settings for almost a month. The monitor arrived with a single dead red pixel near the center of the screen, which makes it annoying but it is otherwise not a problem. The colors are not great, at least not out of the box. I also have an Acer B243W bdr 24.4-Inch LCD Monitor that I was using on the same computer, and the colors and quality of that monitor were quite perceivably better. Having said all that, the Asus monitor has performed well through nearly constant gaming (World of Warcraft, Crysis, and Dragon Age). Overall, the monitor is adequate for being under $200, but I would probably choose a different monitor if I had to do it all over again.

I'll keep this short. I use this monitor for work and gaming. I've only had it a couple weeks but so far it suits my needs perfectly. It arrived in great condition with no dead pixels. I like the presets, especially "theater" mode, which for me is perfect for gaming. I play hours and hours of games and this monitor looks great.

Good res, no dead pixels, speakers quiet and a bit tinny. Box comes with a convenient handle on top for transport. I've kept the box to lug it around to LAN parties and stuff. The speakers come in handy for that and for when i use it with my Xbox 360.

Pros:
- Large for a monitor (27")
- Bright, colorful picture
- Fast response time (no ghosting)

Cons:
- No provisions for a wall-mount (I actually welded my own wall-mount just for this monitor)
- Some backlight bleeding along the top and bottom (mostly top)

I think any monitor should be wall-mountable. I don't have enough room on my desk even for a thin LCD. And, since the monitor is pretty big, you don't want it right in front of your face. It just makes sense to mount it to a wall. Luckily, I just happen to be an amateur welder. So, I fabricated a big adapter that allows me to mount this monitor onto my existing wall-mount. All I have to do is slide the monitor in from the side (see my customer image). Of course, not everyone should have to weld their own freaking mount.

I've had a Samsung Syncmaster T220HD for over two years and I love the Samsung ToC brand of TV/Monitors. I thought that stepping up my game to a bigger monitor would be a wise choice...and it was.
This monitor has amazing clarity and the colors are quite vibrant. I bought the monitor thinking it was similar to my T220HD, but I should've read more clearly (sadly Amazon doesn't always list all the detailed specs for their items, so I should've looked at the Samsung website or other reviews elsewhere).
Pros: This monitor is amazing for gaming. The 2ms response time makes a bit of difference, and even at 27 inches, being in HD is amazing. It's thin so it has a nice design and doesn't drain a lot of power.
Cons: Somehow, both from being mislead by a review on here and my own assumption, I thought this came with a remote (which is does not). Don't assume it's like a TV, because it's not. No cable input, RCA or Composite inputs, and actually no VGA input either. Sorta confusing why the box includes a VGA cable without supplying a DVI-adapter for it, and then also including a DVI cable too. They should've included an HDMI cable instead. Also, no speakers. That's ok for me, I used my computer speakers. Biggest con, have a stuck pixel near the center left of my screen. I didn't notice it until I was playing Socom and I was playing snow levels. Now, any game that has any bright or white areas, that pixel jumps out and is quite irritating.
Hopefully, nobody gets the stuck pixel as I did.
Overall, a beautiful monitor. I have no issue with the stand since I don't move my monitor. Not bad for the money, and know what you buy before you do (as common sense would probably have it).

I bought this monitor to go in my bedroom so I could watch TV shows at my desk, or in bed. My laptop's built in 17" display just wasn't cutting it. I'm quite pleased with my purchase, and I continue to believe that Samsung makes excellent monitors.

Pros:
*Fast start up speed. My 32" Samsung HDTV in the front room takes a roughly 15-20 seconds to turn on and have a picture, but this monitor turns on in roughly 2-3. It's REALLY fast.
*Some of the other reviews said they had difficulty turning on the monitor and using the buttons on the front. I've found if you swipe your figure over the button instead of trying to "push" it, it turns on every time. It's actually pretty slick.
*I was worried that the "touch of red" was going to be ugly. I like red, but nothing in my room IS red. Thankfully, the red is very subtle, and looks really nice in my room.
*Very sharp quality. I regularly watch HD content on this monitor, and it looks amazing.
*Samsung included all the cables and adapters, and while it isn't a huge deal, it's kind of nice.

Cons:
*When watching very dark scenes, I can see some white bleeding through on the very bottom and top middle. I've only seen this happen a few times, and it was during pitch black moments of a TV show. Even when it's happening, it's not super noticeable, but I did want to mention it.
*I know it's not a TV, but I wish it had a remote, or at least let me buy one separately. It's not a huge deal, but it would be kind of nice if I could turn it off remotely.

Summary:
It does everything I wanted it to, and even though the white bleeds through every now and then, it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of the monitor.

I'm upgrading from a 24" HP monitor with I really liked, but got tired of waiting for HP to release their new 27" display. I resolution on this is really really good. I like the non-glare screen .. Set up on my new HP computer was very easy. I'm a photographer, and can really use the extra screen space the 27" display gives. This thing also looks really cool on my desk. I like the LED on/off switch. Just swipe your finger over the lower right hand corner of the frame and it switched on, then the lights go off and become invisible. I've always been partial to HP products, but couldn't bee happier with this one.

Overall, a very nice and attractive monitor. Works fine as my 'extended' monitor. Only reason I didn't give it a 5 star was that the On/Off switch is not really a switch per sey... instead it is a place on the lower right of the face that all you are supposed to do is 'Touch' to turn on or off. Mine rarely works as it is supposed to. So I just leave it on all the time and just shut the lid on my laptop to remove any image to the screen. Otherwise I might spend 5 minutes trying to "Touch" the right spot with the right amount of tensil pressure to get it to turn on... or not. Can be frustrating. Like I said though... all other features are very nice. Just wish it had a old fashion on/off switch.

Resolution:
For this size monitor, I think 1600*900 is the ideal size otherwise the text size (1920*1080) will appear too small.

Comparing to 2009m:
2009m is the 2009 model. it is not energy star efficient qualified. it is glossy finish. It does not have 100X100 mount. For 20$ more, I would go for 2010i.

Comparing to 2210m:
The 21.5' 2210m is 1920*1080 full HD with HDMI input and is gloss screen. First of all, 2210m is a great monitor if you like gloss screen and are used to relatively small character size. However, if I have extra cash and if I like glossy screen, I would go for a larger screen such as 2310m or 2509m since the character size is simply too small for me on 2210m than that on 2010i.

Comparing to Samsung 2333SW
I also own Samsung 2333SW. Even if it is full HD, the color is so weak comparing to HP 2010i. The most important thing is that I always feel eye strain on the Samsung 2333SW. I just feel so comfortable working on the HP monitor.

Character size:
The character size appears larger on this monitor than that on Samsung 2333Sw 23"(1920*1080) monitor and that on 2210m. You may like this if your eyesight is not as good as before.

If you are looking for a budget monitor best used for online browsing, text editing, movie playing, and photo editing, this would be a great buy.

About HP consumer monitor 2*** model:

Have been doing research on hp monitor for a while. I went to Costco to check also. Personally, I prefer the 'i' version to the 'm' version since I don't like the glossy finish. Even with the anti-glare coating, I still see things or myself clear on the screen. I feel eye strain too (the most important thing). I wish they had a bigger screen model. Unfortunately, they don't have the corresponding 2310i, 2510i, 2710i in US(only available in UK). They do have the 2310m, 2509m,2710m in US, but they are glossy finish. the only downside with the i version is there is no hdmi input.
