Is a great all around lens for a 1.6 sensor.
It took decent pictures but nothing that will take your breath away.
It's a great kit lense replacement.
My aperture ring is now stuck. after more than a year and around 20k shot's

I'm not satisfied with that failure so soon.
I always take good care of all my equipment, the camera has at least twice that amount of shots (xti) and is working great with the 18-55
A camera failure at this point, will be more close to failure (getting to 50k shot's) but not a lens, or not this one at least.
(Update)The repair by a canon authorize center, is $180.00 , they will replace 2 parts as they said is necessary in order to avoid future problems...
It will take almost 7 weeks to get it done.

This has been one of those lenses that stays attached to my Canon 40D almost 90% of the time. Takes sharp pictures and does a good job eliminating camera shake. USM adds great focus ability and really fast. Nice hefty and solid feel to it without being so heavy that it hurts your hands/wrists after a few hundred shots.

I purhcased this lens to replace the one that came with my EOS 30D camera, and I was indeed impressed with the significant improvement of picture quality.

I made my purchase based on others' reviews and they were indeed accurate and helpful. This lens definitely worths keeping as the new default lens for my 30D. I am not a professional and was only trying to shoot sharper and more color-rich images of my kids and landscapes, and it seemed I did reach my goal with this lens.

I'm not going to go into too much detail other than to echo the others who are disappointed with this lens. I have an XSi and this lens isn't much better than the kit lens. The problem is that I paid $400 for it.

My issues with it are mainly in image quality. Wide angle shots are usually soft, even taken on a tripod. Other shots have been soft also with aberrations, poor contrast, poor saturation and there is dust in my lens like a few others have mentioned.

I knew going in that the lens wouldn't be fast or very good in low light, and I have other options for that anyway(Mark I 50mm f1.8, Tamron 17-35 f2.8-4, Tamron 70-200 f2.8). Don't expect the IS to make this equivalent to a faster lens that doesn't have IS. Just doesn't work that way.

I just received my Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 today and cannot wait to get out and give a try. This will hopefully replace the 17-85 as my walk around lens.

The very best advice I can give anyone who is looking at Canon mid-quality lenses such as this one is to check out the Tamron equivalent. The photos I get from my 70-200 are stunningly good and I can go to 2.8 where the similarly priced Canon is a 4 I believe. IS and USM aren't that important to me, so the faster Tamrons with their outstanding picture quality are where it's at for me.

This lens just arrived in the mail.

I've had a D40 for about 2 years now, and have been only using the stock 18-55 lens that comes with the kit. The postman dropped off the lens about 30 minutes before we were set to take our little toddler to a children's theme park. Perfect timing.

While I have always loved how my D40 takes pictures, after a few hours with this lens, I don't know if I'll ever use the kit lens again. This lens feels like I have taken the blinders off my camera, and boy now can it breath. With outside shooting, and several of my pics in the upper 200 area - I used shutter priority mode, and set the shutter speed to 1/500, set max iso to 800, and wow was I impressed with the results. I could frame the little guy just perfectly while he was on his little rides, and the photos came out way better than anything I have done before (shows how much composition can effect a photo).

At 300, this lens will only open up to F5.6 - so I would suggest bumping up the iso or getting a tripod if you are going to be shooting in that range mostly.

Here are some main things I noticed about the feel and function of the lens:

1. The lens ads considerable weight to the camera over the stock 18-55 lens (DUH).
2. The zoom is not as smooth, but is still very smooth, especially considering the heft of the lens is so much more than the kit lens.
3. The AF is louder than the kit lens, but is fast and more than enough. It feels like a tank, and when it does AF you can really feel it snap into focus.

Overall, I really really love this lens. I'm not in denial - I'm not a pro photographer, and I never will be. I will alway just be a normal dad that happens to nerd out over his gadgets. But with this lens - I'll blow away those point and shoot photos ... lol.

I wanted to upgrade to a longer zoom from my Nikkor 55-200mm lens, and it sounded like this was going to be a great substitute for the Nikkor 70-300 zoom lens which is way more expensive. Out of the box it looks and feels great, and the magnification is excellent. However, I hadn't realised how much difference the VR - vibration reduction - on the Nikon makes. I take a lot of handheld sports and landscape shots. The sigma lens produced photos that just weren't clear enough for me. There was a lot of blurring, presumably from camera shake. This was unacceptable so I had to return it. I'll just have to spend the extra $$$ on the Nikkor with VR.

Great value, excellent build quality, a pleasure to use in good light. Outstanding in macro mode.

This lens is an excellent example of a high quality product that Sigma is known for, delivered on a budget, and when used within its limitations delivers excellent results.

Ran this lens for 6 months on my Nikon D60 without issue. Now that I have a D300S, this lens remains in my bag. No optical stabilization is a real limitation. You wont be happy with any picture taken with a shutter speed of less than 1/125.

Feels great - the build quality is everywhere. Focus speed is good not great. The focus noise is there but not an issue.

Portraits at 100mm look wonderful on this lens!

Okay, I've bought this lens twice from Amazon. The first lasted a few hours before (when switching from macro to regular mode), the AF simply died. No motor noise after that, no focusing at all! So I've had my new lens (which btw, I had to argue with Amazon on sending out a replacement, they seem to think their customers are idiots and don't know when merchandise is defective) for only a few hrs of shooting. So far, so good.

Yes, it needs a lot of light. Yes, it hunts and misses on focus occasionally, but it's really not annoying. The images, though, are quite good for this price range! I tried a Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF Nikkor SLR Camera Lens, and omg, what a piece of plastic junk that is! In comparison, this is a sturdy lens that produces images that are occasionally soft, but nothing like the oatmeal mushiness of the Nikon images!

If this lens lasts, I'm sure I'm gonna love it; it lets you get those shots from afar for a very reasonable price!

I'll keep you posted on whether this lens holds up!

I've read the reviews from 1 to 5 stars and can't see how anyone could give this Sigma lens below 4 stars; baring damage or factory defect. Some of the complaints that I've read; too heavy, too noisy, astetics are poor, poor focusing, poor fit, etc, etc. I've had this lens for about four hours and I've taken 50 or 60 shots alternating between my Nikor 55-200mm afs lens and I must say that this lens is a little "jewel". There is no VR, so a steady hand is required when zoomed out to 300mm(or a tripod). I went to the end of my dock here in Port Canaveral, FL, mid-day, with the lens connected to a Nikon D60 and shot at boats, fishermen, bugs, parked cars, the bridge, signs, screws (macro ), etc - - some fun. I've had a camera in my hands for some 45 years, had many cameras and lenses, taken a bizzilion shots, some good, most not so good but always shooting. All I can say is, for $200.00, you can't go wrong. Get it, knowing that it's not a thousand dollar lens and go have some fun shooting whatever tickles your fantasy (you can get that thousand dollar lens later when you've got the bucks).

This is a good lens for its price. Good image quality even at full zoom, quite sharp at all levels. If you have the kit lens or the 50mm 1.8 prime this is a good complement lens for zoom work. Autofocus is a bit noisy, but it is fast enough for non-pro work. the IS helps, so that is a plus. Quality of materials is not stellar, but for this level of price is quite acceptable. Highly recommended.

Another great deal from Amazon along with my Canon T1i Rebel SLR camera. You can see the feathers on the birds. I also took photos of the ocean crashing against rocks and they are so clear you can see the outer water droplets. We also bought a High-speed SD memory disk which could have helped with the photos. I would recommend this lens. My wife and I were recently on a trip along the Mississippi coast and to view the Giant Redwoods of California. We bought this lens to go along with our powershot camera. Some have said they could not take action shots with it but I have great photos of sea gulls in flight and the waves as they crest, curl, and crash on the beach.

well the question of is this an ok lens yes and no. i did 3 events where i needed long focal length and this thing crapped out on me at 300mm/ no flash/ iso 6400/ at f5.6 - 1/150 which gives super blurry pics... and don't think of moving the shutter speed this thing looses so much light. but ok i tried it outside in sunny conditions, well it was super dark as well shooting RAW, adjusting exposure in post shows to much grain for an outdoor picture... in all i was not pleased with this lens and opted for the 70-200mm f2.8 yes it is worth the 2k price but you get what you pay for...
when it comes to a lens on't be cheap or you won't be happy....

Very nice lens I've taken a number of wildlife photo's with it and I can honestly say I have never seen a bad pic. come out of the lens, I can't see paying a lot of $$$ for a 300mm lens. The lens is very simple to use, the lens focuses right in and locks. I'm very happy with the lens. Keep in mind I don't think Canon is going to sell a lens that doesn't work or isn't compatable with a Canon camera( I have a Canon rebel xt). All in all I'm very happy with the lens.

I bought this lens about 6 months ago to use with my 50D...I had people tell me that it was a waste if I upgraded to full frame and that spooked me for a bit, but I bought it locally and tried it out and was INSTANTLY taken and have never looked back...
I will wait out the great debate over crop vs. full frame...all in all this is a beautiful lens that has shown it's value over and over.

I am currently searching for an ultra-wide lens for my 7D. I read reviews far and wide and found this Amazon pool of reviews. I became very enthusiastic about this lens while reading all these extraordinary high praises and reviews people gave. Then I looked at all the pictures supposedly taken with this marvel, and what a disappointment! None, I mean NONE, of these pictures had a 'wow' factor that made me say, "Oh My God" I gotta have this lens! Most of these pictures are uninspiringly dull, off-color, out-of-focus, you name it - none that I could associate with a high-end camera. My point-and-shoot camera can take way sharper and brighter pictures than those samples given with these reviews. I'm sorry if all ultra-wide lenses take these kind of pictures, I'll stick with my current lens and post-process my pictures using panoramic maker software on my computer!

The single most important reason to get this lens is so that you do not limit your creativity.
Yes, with this lens you will find new ways of shooting that you could not do with any other lens that is not a superwide angle lens. You will see a whole new perspective thru this lens unattainable with a longer focal length lens. You will be able to have near, middle and far objects/subjects in sharp focus all in the same frame. It will allow you to compose shots not thought of before, because you were not able to do it, without this lens. You will open up a whole new vista to your creative vision.

Side note: Be thankful you have a smaller sensor camera because the lens equivalent of this focal length lens on a full size camera is the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L ll USM at a price of $1,400., double the price. If you factor in the cost of a full frame camera $2,500., that's a lot to pay for creative vision.

I usually keep the Tam 26-75mm on my cam, but since getting the 10-22, the Tam is gathering dust. At 22mm the lens gives a normal perspective, you just gotta get a lot closer to the subject than you would with a normal range zoom. As you go wide, you also find you have to get closer to what you are shooting than you are used to. Once you figure out how placing the horizon affects the pic, you can be at 10mm and really not get much distortion; or how to use the distortion effect to get that cool wide angle look. You don't need a hood (not really sure how you would keep it out of the scene and have it blocking light anyway), you have to work to make it flare. I don't see any CA in normal full screen viewing. Deep rich color, sharp. When I first popped it on my cam I thought it was defective because I could see "stuff" in the viewfinder; turned out the lens was resolving the dust on the mirror. Did loads of research on the Sigma and Tam (the 22-75mm f2.8 is a real good lens also), I really don't see how you could do better than this lens, and yes, you pay for it. I read one review that consisted of "just buy it", pretty much sums it up.

1. There appears to be a loose part inside both copies of lens. There is a very small movement with clicking sound when i shake it "very very gently". Is this normal? Are you guys experiencing this on yours?

I agree with the general sentiment out there about this lens: solid construction quality, as lightweight as you could expect, and very easy to use. I find that it's not the sharpest as 250mm (even with VR on when applicable), but you always need to compromise with such super-zooms. I took this lens with me on a 2-week trip to Italy where it experienced a wide range of temperatures (20-80 degrees) and conditions. It performed admirably on my Nikon D90, taking about 400 pictures a day. At one point I had some problems with it maintaining a good solid eletrical connect with the body of the camera, but that problem eventually disappeared. This is my favorite out and about lens and I highly recommend it. Also good to know: This lens AND autofocus will work with Nikon's D3000 body, though the camera is dwarfed by the lens.

This is a pretty good lens for the price. This lens is for Canon EOS DSLR cameras with APS-C size image circle.

Pros: Super-Sharp Images, Compact Design, Light weight.

The Lens Construction has 11 elements in 9 groups. The biggest thing I like about this lens is the wide angle of view of 75° 20' - 27° 50' - That's pretty wide and real useful in taking indoor face shots or getting the whole group shot in frame.

I am not a big fan of AF on this lens or most of Canon lens. It seems to work too slow vs kicking it in manual and just doing it myself.

The one and only con I have is working in low light with hi ISO settings, this lens craps out sooner then the other lens I own.

All in all if you have an Canon EOS DSLR i would defiantly have this lens in your photo bag.

Like just about anyone out there, I got this lens along with my Canon XSi, thinking it'll be a good starter lens to practice. And it was. But shortly thereafter I got the Canon 50mm 1.8, since it was so cheap, and pretty much never used 18-55 after that.
The only time I'd use it, is indoors, where 50mm was just too wide. But even then, although having 18mm helped, having f3.5-5.6 certainly did NOT, making this lens too slow for indoors even on a reasonably bright day, and forcing me to use a flash (read: you might want to buy extra batteries and invest in a Canon 430 EX II, which is about $250, so you're likely not going to save much money by going with 18-55). Plus, its 18mm end is a bit too wide for a pleasing portrait...

So, if I were to do it all over again, I'd pass on this lens. Right now, the difference between buying just the body of XSi and buying XSi+ this lens is roughly $50. You can find a 50mm 1.8 for about $100, $90 if you wait a bit, $80 if you go used or get really lucky. So, if you get the body sans this lens, all you need is another $50 or less to get a prime lens. I think it's very much worth it. Sure, with a prime, you miss out on the versatility of the zoom, but you'll get a faster lens and a better lens.

If you absolutely feel that you need a zoom, I would strongly recommend checking out Tamron and Sigma. I do not own one myself (and generally prefer primes), so I won't go recommending any one in particular, but it sounds from some reviews that they are at least worth considering.

Finally, just wanted to mention: I'm trying to sell this lens right now, and unlike the 2 other lenses I have (one of which was 50mm), it's proving difficult. No surprise here, given that everyone buys one, so there must be tons of them floating around. Just saying - do not look at its $170 tag and think that you can sell it for a generous profit later, when you outgrow it (which, if you're any serious about photography, will happen soon). The used ones on Amazon go at $92, which is a steep price drop for a lens, you usually do not expect to buy a used less for nearly 50% off. And there are 30 of them (used) on Amazon at this time. Also a large number, compared to other lenses. So, I think you'll be lucky to get $80 for it when you sell, which means you'll make a whooping $30!

For the most part, I love this lens and have gotten really good close up/people shots with it, but if you are looking for landscape/far away shots, this lens isn't as great as others. This lens includes some really nice features like image stabilizer, which makes the pictures come out more clearly, as well as automatic focusing, which is necessary if you are a beginner. This lens really appeals to the beginner and makes learning so much easier. The detail and shadows are amazing, and you can notice every blemish and hair strand if you zoom in on the screen after you take the picture. The speed is a little slow if you are trying to take consecutive photos really quick, you have to wait about 5 seconds between photos to allow the lens to adjust as well as process the image. I know its not bad and if you are a photographer you are probably patient, but if you are trying to get action shots where you don't have much time to wait, it can be a little annoying. If I'd have to say the best things to take pictures with this lens, its close up shots of people, close up shots of pretty much anything, photos of buildings and scenery that isn't really far away when the lighting is above average, and indoor shots where lighting is average. Under low lighting, this lens isn't as high quality, but it can pull some good ones off. Mainly this lens if for taking pictures of friends and outdoor closeups. If you are looking for a lens that can take better action/far away shots, look for some of the bigger, more expensive lenses by Canon. You will be satisfied though, I used this camera to take photos for the yearbook, and they all came out really professional, and looked much better than photos taken from regular, non SLR cameras. The quality of these photos even looked better than some of the photos taken from lens of the Sony Alpha lens, which is the equivalent to a Canon XS.

This lens came with my Canon Rebel T2i and it was an excellent beginner kit lens. Sure, it may not be as 'fast' as the more expensive lenses, but it is a great lens to learn the camera with. I have taken a few great wide-angle landscape shots, as well as some great close ups with the telephoto end.

If you are looking for an easy to use, kit lens or beginner lens, than give this one a shot.

This lens is a must have for indoor low lit areas or night time photography. The kit lens on my D40x is the 18-55 which is nice but due to it's high f-stop is bad in low light. The 35mm 1.8 is amazing. It removes the need for a flash in most circumstances. I'm still going to buy the SB400 flash soon but this lens is perfect for what I need right now.

I purchased the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 lens as the primary lens for use on my new Nikon D5000 12.3 MP DX Digital SLR Camera with 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD (Body Only). The lens is amazing (and so is the D5000). The sharpness, contrast, and color fidelity for this lens makes it seem like a much more expensive lens. The lens is very bright and focuses quickly. There is very little to dislike about this lens. But there are a few minor things that need to be mentioned. The lens has a bit of barrel distortion, which is somewhat surprising for a standard focal length prime lens. I included two photos of Montreal's Notre Dame Basillica that shows the effect in the user photo section of this Amazon page. It is simple barrel distortion, and Nikon Capture NX 2 Full Version will automatically correct for it (or for any other Nikon lens distortion or vignetting). Supposedly, there is some minor vignetting with this lens, but I have never been able to see it. In truth, the barrel distortion is usually not visible to me. BTW, Capture NX2 is a wonderful piece of software for working with Nikon NEF files. Between correcting for aberrations of all Nikon lenses automatically, providing easy tools for working with Nikon controls like Auto D-lighting in software, and providing a pleasing assortment of very user-friendly pixel-tweaking tools, this software is the perfect accompaniment to Nikon hardware.

The second limitation with this lens is its inability to shoot macro photographs. The maximum magnification is 1:6.3. I'm not really into macro photography, so this was not particularly important to me. If you are more devoted to macrophotography, though, you should be aware of this limitation. If you like to shoot macro without a tripod, you will also miss the lack of VR on this lens. I can't imagine it would be of any value in any other context with a lens this short, though. So I don't consider the lack of VR to be a flaw in this lens design -- it is an appropriate cost-savings of an unnecessary feature. I would much rather have this lens at $200 than a VR version of it at $400.

The third limitation is that there is no distance scale for the lens' focus. This makes it almost impossible to get an accurate sense of where the hyperfocal point should be using this lens. You just need to "eyeball it" and hope for the best.

Finally, the lens is a "G" type lens, so it does not have any way to set the aperture manually -- you need to use the camera's aperture controls. Personally, I am fine with that approach. But it may be an irritation to some people.

When I bought the D5000, I bought it without the kit lens because I wanted to use this as my main "walking around" lens. I am very happy with that decision. I have acquired the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR [Vibration Reduction] Zoom Nikkor Lens for telephoto, and am about to buy the Tokina 12-24MM F/4.0 Pro II Zoom Lens for Digital Canon SLR Cameras for wide angle. But this 35mm is my main squeeze with this camera, and I am delighted with it. If you looked at the Notre Dame pics, you have some idea of how good this lens is in very dark circumstances. Between the low-light performance of the D5000 and this lens, I really feel that there aren't any conditions under which I would want to take a picture but would be limited by my equipment. There are still shots that exceed my skill, but not my equipment.

I wanted to like this lens. The quality just wasn't up to par. Actually, it was pretty horrible. I am a professional just starting out, and thought I could cut corners and save a little cash with an off brand lens. However, after trying out the lens for one event, I had to return it due to it's very disappointing quality. Zoomed in, the pixels look muddled, and at times, the shadows look... choppy. I don't know the best way to explain it. If it helps at all, my camera is a Nikon D300s. I have never seen the type of results this lens produced from any other images/lenses.

I've learned my lesson. I invested in a more expensive, Nikon lens. The quality problems have disappeared. Save your money or look else where if you are anything more than just a hobbyist.

I'm not sure if the lens that I got was just defective or representative of the product as a whole. I will say that this lens is in the process of being returned and replaced with another brand. It was nice to think that one lens would answer all of my needs but there is a reason to go with a DSLR and that is the ability to change lenses for varying circumstances. This lens performed average at most focal lengths but as I approached 200mm the quality dropped off to a very unsatisfactory level. I will put in a plug for Amazon, they worked with me to return the product within their return policy so when I ordered another lens I went back to Amazon.

I love this lens for what it offers, taking a variety of great photos with out having to change anything out. I do a lot of hiking with this and it's great for that variety, either wildlife out in the distance or a great shot of a mountain view. The only thing I find a little annoying is the lens not being able to 'lock' to stop the expansion while your walking. All in all though this is a great lense that I have some fantasitc photos from.

Like most people here I'm very pleased with this lens, and if you stop down even one stop its really sharp. Slightly soft at 250mm, so I avoid that, sweet spot aperturewise is about F8 to f14 but having said that it does a decent job at any aperture. A great all in one lens that eliminates dust issues because I never have to change i! One small problem is the "zoom creep" when the lens if pointed down. In my case its more like "zoom fall". I wish the zoom were a little stiffer, but I avoid this by keeping the lock on when I'm not using it.

Because of sturdy build quality, solid performance, and value, Tamron has become my current favorite non-Canon lens manufacturer, for my EOS system SLR's. Having had great results with Tamron's 17-50mm, and 28-75mm Di LD zooms, I had no reservations about choosing the Tamron 18-250mm zoom (F3.5-6.3), when I needed a general use lens for travelling. Thus far, this superzoom has proved to be a versatile performer, that provides good results across a wide focal range. An excellent choice as a walk-around or travel lens. With this one lens, you can easily shoot decent quality landscapes and scenic shots, or get in close for basic portraits.

The housing is primarily plastic, making the weight very manageable. The 62mm lens is well constructed, and compact, measuring 3.5 inches high, and 6.5 inches fully extended. There is a nice wide rubber grip circling the barrel. Autofocusing is reasonably fast, smooth, and silent, with minimal vibration. As you might expect, the lens is subject to some lens creep, but there is a lock button, to keep the barrel from extending when not in use.

While you probably will not achieve spectacular results across the board, you can probably expect images that while somewhat soft, still look reasonably sharp, without excessive distortion. As the barrel extends, weight should not be a major issue, but holding the camera steady becomes more critical, as the lens does not have image stabilization.

Besides generally good performance, the convenience of this lens is another of its major attributes. As Canon does not manufacturer a lens in this focal range, you will be looking at a non-Canon lens. At this price level, you probably won't get much better performance. Buying from Amazon, you have the opportunity to try out the lens, and return it if it does not meet your expectations. And Tamron lenses are covered by a six year factory warranty.

This is the lens that I now leave on my camera. If I had one regret, it is that I should have purchased the 18-270 zoom. I was a bit apprehensive about buying a lens other that Canon. I wouldn't hesitate again.

My two cents' worth--I recently purchased thisCanon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens for Canon EOS SLR Cameras lens, primarily guided by Gustavo's review, since I like to do a lot of investigation, and simply didn't have time; I found he had already done the work for me. So, how's the lens? WOW--I'm impressed! Yes, as some reviewers note, there is a little noise from the stabilization, but I have not had it bother any wildlife I was attempting to photograph yet. And yes, the lens does get longer as it zooms, but compared to the price to step up to one that doesn't I'll happily deal with it; just requires paying attention. Some mention it's a bit heavy, but I don't find that to be a problem at all. The ability to shoot at full magnification with the Image Stabilization managing camera shake is amazing--got some shots of twin fawns on the dark edge of a woods while just resting my elbows on my truck--these shots would have been IMPOSSIBLE without a tripod with my old non-stabilized lens. In this situation, I really got the 3 stops of improvement they advertise. While nowhere near the build quality of my (really) old FD lenses [yes, I'm old too, just like my lenses :-)], this lens's quality is a step up from the less expensive (half the price)Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer Telephoto Zoom LensI was considering, which is similar in quality to the 18-55 that came with my T2i. I'm glad I spent the extra money. In short, I would highly recommend this lens. BTW, in my opinion, if you can't afford the extra bucks, don't be afraid of the 55-250; should last a long time if you don't abuse it.

One note: there is an older Canon 70-300 lens, which brings much poorer reviews--don't confuse the old one with the current one.

I was debating on weather to get a regular SLR or to get a super zoom camera. I liked the quality of the SLR better but still wanted to get the super zoom capability. I love that I can get the close ups now of my kids in sports and in a program that they are in without having to sit in the first row.

This lens is a great all around lens. It takes excellent still photos and it does a great job on action shots like at my kids softball games. We went from a 18-55mm zoom lens and could not believe the difference. We looked into some of the cheaper lenses like Tamaron and some of the others but heard some things about them that changed our thoughts and made us go with the Canon brand. I dont regret it for a minute. I only wish that Canon would offer this lens STANDARD with the lens hood.

The only negative I have noticed so far is that the zoom barrel does not turn as easily as I would like (like the kit lens does in the Canon Rebel XSi). I do not know if this is a design feature to prevent gravity from rolling the zoom barrel out or not. Sometimes I have to look at the zoom barrel to see if it's not moving because I'm at the end or because I just didn't turn it hard enough. I would rather not have to look ever.

The IS is amazing... if you take several shots rapid fire at a really low shutter speed, you can still get one that is sharp. I find that after the first few shots, my hand gets steadier.

Everything else seems great!

This does not have to do with the lens specifically, but for those wondering how far a 300mm lens can go - For small animals like tiny birds, you can't be too far away or they will just be too small. If they're perched on a second floor balcony and you are on the ground about 15 feet away, you can get them to take up a good amount of the picture but you can't zoom in on their eye or anything. If you like to zoom in really close to small animals that are skittish, from what I've heard, you can probably get away with using a 400mm lens without a tripod, I would recommend that.

Also 70mm is a little too zoomed in if you want to use it also to shoot your friends that are hanging out with you in a room. If you move like 10 feet away, you can get a picture, but I felt like I had to back up a little too much. It's still possible though. It made me start thinking about getting an 18mm-200mm to get the large range. Changing lenses is a hassle :)

There are good lenses that you like, and then there are good lenses that you love. This one is love. Of my growing lens collection, this is by far my favorite. Its best qualities are incredible sharpness and color, even at the smallest of ranges. This is also the only lens that I don't feel is overpriced at all. The fact that it doesn't have IS is barely noticeable. If you're thinking about buying this lens- buy it!

I do a lot of small product photography particularly of watches and I was in the market for a good macro lens. Everywhere I looked seemed to say this was the lens to get and it does not disappoint. I'm no expert pro photographer but the image clarity is truly fantastic and it works as a good portrait lens as well. I will definitely find more uses for this one than I had originally planned.

There are a couple of downsides: 1.The lens is heavy. I don't find this to be a major problem but it is worth mention. 2.It can be a bit difficult to use without a tripod. In low light conditions and at macro distances I find it is really difficult to get a clear picture without using high iso speeds, but I don't have the steadiest hands. This is not really a flaw in the product and I was expecting this. It does not have image stabilization but it is about half the price of the image stabilized version so it is an ok compromise in my book. However if, for some reason, you absolutely must be able to take handheld photos in low light or at macro distances I would look for something else. Overall a great lens that does everything it is supposed to do.

I bought this lens after going through many reviews and mainly used this with my Canon Rebel XT, this lens is very good!

Though it's a macro lens, I have used this for portrait photos and it works like a charm! I have yet to test this on my new Canon t2i. I am sure this lens will give me better pictures with the new camera.

This is my first macro lens so I don't really have anything else to compare to. Regardless, it has been wonderful to use. I have been taking many pictures of plants, flowers, and bugs and getting some beautiful shots. The colors are crisp and the images clear. The only drawback I can think of is its weight in relation to the Canon Rebel body. The lens is made mostly of metal while the Rebel's body is made mostly of plastic. Because of this it seemed a bit awkward to fit the lens onto the camera body at first. All of that set aside, I would highly recommend this lens to anybody who is working with a limited budget.

I recently upgrade from the Canon 50mm 1.8II while it has its obvious upgrade (1.4, USM, better builds etc.) I dont find the pictures that much different besides flare resistance. overall its a good lens and a good value

Like I said if you're on a budget get the 1.8, or if you have the cash or are planning on keeping this lens for 2-3 years just get the 1.4.

The EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is a reasonably well-built lens and offers commendable optical quality. The focusing is quick and quiet in spite of the low cost micro-USM motor. The bokeh quality is excellent, and the full-time manual focusing feature becomes very handy when the camera picks the wrong focus target at a shallow depth of field. Many users regard this lens as slightly soft when the aperture is wide open, but for low-light settings, sometimes the only choice is slightly soft or entirely unusable, and being able to stop clear out to 1.4 is then beneficial. The use of a 58mm filter ring ensures access to a wide range of quality filters at reasonable prices.

In most respects the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is worth the upgrade from the EF 50mm f/1.8 II, which begs the question of why Canon designed the front element to travel outside of the lens barrel during focusing. That sort of cost-saving measure is expected on a $100 basic lens like the EF 50mm f/1.8 II, but not on a higher-end prime costing over $300. Fortunately, the moving front element does not rotate on either of these lenses, so position-sensitive filters such as circular polarizers and partial-gradient ND filters will not be disrupted by focusing operations. However, other popular mid-grade Canon primes have no external movement, including the EF 20mm f/2.8 USM, EF 28mm f/1.8 USM, and EF 85mm f/1.8 USM.

A first-time dSLR user would be better served with the 50mm f/1.8 II, and higher-end buyers would be better served with the 50mm f/1.2L, if for no other reason than to delete the external travel on the lens barrel. For everyone else, the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM is an essential part of any well-rounded camera kit.

Listen closely, you will NOT be able to replicate the same type of images with anything in this price range. Its perfect for bday parties and low light situations. An aperture of 1.4 allows you to completely own the low-light hours while producing tremendous bokeh behind your subject. I've compared images against my 24-70m 2.8 at 50mm at 5.6 (where the 50 prime is the sharpest) and its comparable everytime. Any photographer will tell you to keep a handful of primes in your bad for best image quality when "zoom" is not available. All for 369 dollars! You cant loose- buy it!

I bought this lens tempted by Amazon's price drop on it. I have to respectfully disagree with other comments that compare this lens with the L line. Just out of the box I could feel the cheap construction, mostly made of cheap plastic. The focusing ring feels inaccurate and loose, with a short play before it takes action. I returned this lens immediately. I wish Canon was more straightforward about informing customers that everything that is not an L line lens (although some L zoom lens may be questionable too) is just hopeless toys for the unaware or under demanding amateur. Serious photographers beware. This lens is NOT an upgrade from the already crappy (but at least justifiable for the price) EF 50mm 1.8 it's the same type of construction and it is not worth around [...] at all. Honest and reputable retailers must receive a lot of heat and returns of this lens from unsatisfied customers. Don't do it. Save your money for the EF 1.2 L.

I took the lens with me to Gettysburg, Lancaster and Williamsburg. I got some wonderful pictures. The autofocus work perfectly even at the highest setting 300mm. Also the VR is a must. When holding the camera and lens I was not as steady as I would have liked so with the VR the lens took care of that. I also took pictures from a moving train. They also came out good. I would recommend this lens.

Great telephoto for the price.
Works fine on a small format sensor.
The VR works great - I use it without tripod and the pictures do not come out blurry.

I use this lens with Nikon D5000. It compliments Nikon 18-200 VRII lens. I had initially bought 500mm lens but that turned out to be too heavy for me. So, I went with this 300mm. It's fantastic for wild life photography and is a good option if you want to get a taste of telephoto photography. It works brilliantly well with Nikon D5000. I'll post some photos soon. I think other reviewers have listed its pros and cons. What I found really good is that it does NOT have a creep problem. It takes a little more effort to zoom in/zoom out and that prevents lens creeping. As an aside, I bought it from amazon with a 67mm UV Filter, but the filter quality is rather cheap. But the service was great!

I build a lot of scale models and needed a lens of this type to get in nice and tight and show off a lot of detail. I don't have a lot of time to be a professional shutterbug---all I want to do is take great pics of my work without attaining a Bachelor's degree. This lens really gets it done. Beautiful, detailed shots that are crystal clear. I had a hard time coming to terms with paying almost as much money for the lens as we did the camera, but it's worth every penny and more. I have the standard 18---55mm, and 75---300mm lens that came with the camera and they're "ok", but there's a reason those lens were packaged with my camera for $679...you get what you pay for!

Buy a better lens that suits your needs and don't look back!

I originally purchased this lens for portraiture, specifically newborns. I was also looking for a macro lens, and a bit frustrated with some of the limitations from my 50mm.

This lens, in my opinion, is underpriced for the quality of images. Amazing DOF, soft bokeh, incredibly sharp focus. Highly recommended. This should be a staple in every photographer's camera bag.

Used now 0ne month. Fast on focus, reliable. On Rebel Xsi, gives 35 mm equiv.96 mm--mild telephoto. OK for some landscape photography: mountain from 10 miles, barn in field at more than 100 yds/m, flowering plant at 10 paces. Landscape photo near Cannonville Utah, using tripod and 2-sec delayed release, was pin-sharp corner-to-corner, near-to-far, on 13" by 19" print. Could identify flag on butte-top, about 4 mi distance.

Have tried macro mode. Copying 8.5by11" documents at 5 ft--good results. Tried on 1" flowers at about 1 ft--too close, unsharp (my Canon 18-55mm can handle that).

Have done merged panoramas with excellent results: tripod, 2 sec.release delay, manual exposure on same setting, of Lower Calf Creek Falls, Escalante Utah; height of falls and pool 150 ft, from about 150 ft. Combined a number of photos to get composite on Photoshop Elements 4.0, seamlessly for a great photo!

This is a great lens which produces sharp and colorful images,
although it broke after 5 months (~6000 pics) after I shot at f/32.
It gives the Err 01 (communication between camera and lens is faulty),
which is caused by the aperture malfunction.
The lens is still on warranty but not international,
which forces me to pay 1/2 of its price for reparation.
If I would have to buy another lens I'll choose the same one.

I took a few pictures as soon as I received this lens and was immediately impressed. I has always loved taking close up photos and intimate portraits and this is the lens to do that with. It is no Canon L lens but it is just fine for what I need it for. I highly recommend this lens for someone who wants to get into macro photography, take amazing portraits or use it as a general everyday lens.

I agree with the other reviewers who give this lens a poor rating because its mount becomes loose and also breaks so easily. I've had two of these and BOTH had both problems! The last one broke when I had the camera around my neck and jumped down from about 3 feet. The simple jolt was enough to snap the lens off!! Even before that, and again for both lenses, the mount had gotten loose (after only about a year of off-an-on use) so that the electrical contacts didn't always work so that I would have to hold the lens against the camera body and twist it a little to make it work. We are very disappointed with this lens.

Picture quality is great, but what use is that if the lens breaks?

If you get one, treat it gently...

I had this lens for 6 months, paired with my d5000. This is my first Nikon lens (having shifted from Canon). For the price, focal length, built and image quality, its just right for an enthusiast. I used to crave for longer focal lenght but have realized that most of my shots were never past 100mm. This lens surely fits the budget and I am planning to buy a 35mm 1.8 as a compliment to this lens.
During my recent trip to HK, I was able to take great shots with this gear and I'm very happy and satisfied with it!
If money is not an issue, an 18-200 would add more versatility though but the only advantage of it is the extra long end (as I have compared pics using my friend's 18-200). Quality wise, performance, reliability, they are pretty much the same.
Now with the plastic mount, its not really an issue for me. SInce I'm not a pro, a little distortion and light falloff is acceptable. Both this and the 18-200 has these imperfections.
Overall, this is a good buy!

I bought a D5000 that came with the 18-55 but I thought it was way too wide even at 55mm. A month after buying the camera I realized I was never using the 18-55 so I sold it and bought the 18-105. The 18-105 not only has a serious reach advantage over the 18-55, but also allows you to manually focus without flipping the focus switch to manual. It's also just a more convenient and sturdy lens. The 18-55 is sharp and all, and if you're certain you don't need the extra reach then it might be the way for you to go. But for nature and many other kinds of shooting, I want the most reach I can get. This lens + my 70-300 VR is all I need for my nature shooting. You can generally get both of these lenses for about the same price as the 18-200, but with the two lenses you get 50% more reach and sharper images. The convenience of one lens is nowhere near enough of a reason (at least for me) to sacrifice reach and sharpness.

So even though review sites are more critical of this lens than they are the 18-55 and 55-200, I think it's one of the best in Nikon's DX lineup. I just wish I would have bought this from the get-go with the D5000 body-only instead of getting the 18-55 kit lens. Oh well, I'm good now!

I upgraded to this lens from a the kit 18-55mm DX (non VR) lens that I had with my D40 (which I sold). I needed a short range lens for my D90 and read good reviews about this lens.

The portrait and lanscape clarity and image quality is on par with or a little below the 18-55mm. The principal benefit here is the extended range.

I most shoot pictures of a perpetual motion machine, my border collie, and I have yet to get action shots that I am consistently happy with. If I think I am going to shoot an action shot, I need to put on the 55-200mm DX lens, which is an outstanding budget lens.

If I had it to do over again, would I buy this lens? I am not sure. If I shot more DX, I might investigate 16-85mm Nikkor lens. But I shoot mostly FX on big bodies with pro lenses, and the D90 is a just a walk-around for me.

So when I am out wiht my D90, it is the 18-105mm for portraits and landscapes and a reluctant switch to the 55-200mm for action. I had hoped to get more of an all-in-one for the 18-105mm range, but unfortunately it didn't turn out that way.

For people who are primarily shooting landscapes and portraits, I would give this lens 4 stars and recommend it. For those like me who are more concerned with action photos, you might want to investigate some alternatives before settling on this lens.

Of the dozen or so Nikon lenses I've owned, this is the first I've been unhappy with. Features vs. price isn't a problem, but quality of materials has turned out to be a huge issue. To save money or weight (or both) Nikon has used thin, cheap plastic instead of metal for the bayonet mount. I didn't notice just how thin and fragile this plastic was until shooting in 28 degree weather last month, when the lens literally fell off the camera body as I was zoomed in on a subject.

Inside the body I found a tiny shard of black plastic that turned out to be all that ever held the lens on the body. Comparing the shard to the remainder that had NOT broken off the lens, I was shocked to see just how thin this very important of plastic had been on the day the lens left the factory -- what I mean is, I wasn't looking at a mount worn thin by repeated use: this was original material and workmanship with no signs of abuse or wear in the 10 months since I'd purchased it new.

The lens is on its way to Nikon repair now but the only thing I fear more than them NOT fixing it for free is that they'll replace it with another poorly-made lens that's going to fall apart on me in the middle of an important shoot. I don't "baby" my equipment but I do take care of it and I expect it to last for years as a result. This used to be what Nikon stood for and I'm still using Nikon lenses purchased over 20 year ago. Corners were obviously cut to produce this lens cheaply and in looking at how it's made, I'm not surprised it fell off the camera body and into a snow bank during normal use. This lens does NOT represent a commitment to quality. Unless you plan on never removing it from the camera body, I would look elsewhere...

This is the BEST lens i've ever owned, definetly the Canon 24-70L.
I use to shot with two cameras and 2 lenses on my bag, depending of what i want to do and light situation I am in, they are:

* Canon F1,4 50mm
* Canon 28-135 IS
* Canon 70-300
* Sigma 10-20mm
* Fisheye

Depending on the light i only carry around this wonderful lens attached to my Canon 5D MarkII and 2 lenses on my bag, this lens is like having a prime lens at all focus lenght, and the best... is very fast... F2,8.

I love this lens it was great for walking around at a wedding. The F2.8 is great for the low light situations at the reception. It was also great outdoors at the actual wedding. Price is high and IS would have been great but would recommend this to anyone.

I've been using this lens for a while now and have come to find a few things to be true.

1. Sharpness. It is tack-sharp. 'Nough said.
2. Focus. The focusing is quick and silent.
3. It isn't as heavy as people claim. Yes, it is just over 2 lbs, but I really don't know what people expect when they buy an L-series lens. The glass quality is what makes the price and weight go up. I think the weight and construction make my 5d mkII feel very balanced.
4. Zoom. This lens is great for landscape photography on the wide zoom and just right for portrait photography on the narrow zoom. Throughout the zoom range, there is virtually no loss of sharpness or vignetting.
5. The hood and lens go hand in hand, more so than other lenses and their hoods. When you are at 24mm, the lens is fully extended and near the edge of the hood. As you zoom towards 70mm, the lens pulls in, backing deeper into the hood. This helps maximize the shade for the glass. It works quite well.

NOTE: When on a full-body sensor camera, like the 5d mkII, the lens will only take one filter, any more than that and you will see it at 24mm.

This lens is a keeper. Once in your collection, it will be used time and time again as a reliable, sharp, quality lens. You'll get new camera bodies, but you'll still enjoy this lens.

First impression: I was expecting this lens to be heavy because of all the whining about how heavy it is. It's not heavy. It's not even close to heavy. What's heavy is this lens, with a 5d-II body, a battery grip, a 580-EX and a light sphere. And a second 5D-Mark II body with all that, plus a 70-200 2.8. That's heavy.

If you are not prepared to do whatever it takes to get the best image possible, perhaps you should rent this lens first and see what you think of it's weight. If you're a pro, you know that pro level equipment is heavy because it is done right, and you're used to dealing with that fact in the quest for image quality.

I'd like to address another point I see in the previous reviews. If you are a hobbyist or an amateur who is only thinking about buying this lens because you can afford it... don't complain when you can't use it with your on camera flash. It's not designed for use with an on camera flash. It's a professional lens, and professionals rarely if ever use an on camera flash. Why? Besides being sorely underpowered, an on camera flash is too close to the lens and gives horrid lighting and shadows. So if you get this lens, expect that you'll be either using available light, or a real flash.

Okay, on to my review.

Well, it's surprisingly light for all the complaining I read about it being heavy. I'm not a very big guy, either.

It feels solid, but don't equate that with "heavy". Focus ring and zoom ring are very smooth on mine, but the 24-28mm range seems a bit more resistant. I am finding that it's confusing to me which ring is which after using the 28-135 for so long because the focus ring is where the zoom ring used to be, and the zoom ring is significantly smaller. Now the zoom ring is close to the camera and smaller, and it's slightly awkward to zoom. I used to be able to hold the camera body with my right hand and hold the lens with my left, and zoom from this position. Now I cannot zoom from a lens holding position (beneath the lens) and must switch to an overhand position to zoom, which defeats the support and puts added stress on my right wrist and forearm. I'm sure I'll get used to it, but that's probably going to smart once I start shooing weddings again.

Indoors, I was getting shots I simply could not believe using my standard wedding photography settings - not because it was so sharp (more on that in a bit) but because these settings produced EXACTLY what I saw with my own eyes, in camera, regardless of light. I mean EXACTLY... even when I was shooting a window in a dark room. Even when I was shooting in the dark room with nothing bright in the scene. I was stunned, because usually I have to constantly fiddle with the exposure compensation to get this result. Somehow, this lens paired with this camera body seems to be more intelligent with regards to this consideration. It does require some fiddling occasionally, but a standard -2/3rds compensation seems to work wonders indoors with no flash -- perhaps it's just that this lens isn't struggling, as my 28-135 used to.

It quickly became apparent that I have a sharp copy because even magnified as much as my camera can magnify, the results are noticeably sharper than my best day with the 28-135. I can count blades of grass across the street, see power lines in the distance that escape my eyes, differentiate the stones in a wall a mile and a quarter away, and read the labels of small bottles across the room, by ambient light.

Testing showed that this lens resolves such fine detail that ISO really affects the sharpness of the results. I'm shooting at 2.8/ISO 2000 in this dim room, and it's bringing the IQ down to about the level of my 28-135. However, when I use my 580-EX II with a light sphere attached, I can see the pores on people's faces clearly in the resulting images shot from several feet away. Individual eyebrow hairs are also clearly present and separated from each other.

Out in the garden, shooting in overcast conditions, I set my camera to 1/80th, Tv, auto-ISO and a -1 exposure compensation. The resulting images are so vibrant that I can't believe my eyes. Saturation, contrast and color accuracy are insane. It chose an aperture of f/4, though, which didn't give me much DOF to work with... but wow. I then turned my attention to a car a block over, and was able to read 4/6ths of the license plate letters in the magnified image. I could not even see the license plate with my naked eyes (and with glasses, I have 20/20 vision)!

I spent many years wishing I could afford an L lens. Now that I have one, I have absolutely no regrets spending that kind of money on this lens. If I didn't want the best, I'd have bought something else. Now I can rest assured that any mistakes are mine, and not the camera or the lens. It's going be good for keeping me on my toes.

Auto focus is very fast and very accurate, nearly instant but not necessarily dead-on. What I mean by that is, it jumps to the focus point and then makes one minor adjustment. This all takes about a fifth of a second in most lighting conditions. Focus is very accurate as far as I can tell so far. It managed to find focus in about half a second in a room that was darker than I have ever been able to focus in by ambient light, on a dark subject. I'm impressed!

Image stabilization: It would be nice, but I'm not missing it. I only used it on my 28-135 when the lens was unable to keep up with lighting conditions, an I don't see myself having too much trouble with that. I shot some portraits by ambient light in a dimly lit restaurant and was doing spot on exposure at f/3.2, 1/80, ISO 2000-3200. Not the largest DOF, and not the least possible noise, but the shots are quite usable. It seems that this will allow me to work in most situations without having to use a flash, as long as I am careful about the plane of focus and the DOF.

So far, I am very impressed overall, and I can feel myself falling in love. The real test will come when I have more time to hammer this baby and see what she's really capable of, and when I have had some time to do that, I'll update my review here.

So far: 4.9 out of 5 stars. (I'm finding the zoom ring placement isn't quite as easily accessed as I would like right now.)

I sat on the fence for about a month battling between the 24-105mm L and the 24-70. After countless hours of deliberation, I came to the conclusion that the 1 stop was def worth it over the additional 30mm. I was also concerned, that I had spoiled my self with my 50mm 1.4 I'd been shooting with (exclusively) since I purchased my 7D. I cannot make it any clearer that the difference in contrast, saturation and clarity are night and day compared to my prime. Get this lens, you will NOT regret it! The moment your images start to hit film, you'll be floored how truly "special" these L lenses are!

I was looking for a really sharp all around lens with image stabilization. This lens fits the bill. I consistently see great results in my photography; better all around sharpness and color. My only complaint is the lens could have been cheaper.

I just love my new toy, a 24-105 F/4L lens. I am new to photography and I really had to learn about upgrading equipment especially lenses the hard and expensive way. I started out last December 2009, purchased a 500D/Rebel T1i with a kit lens. After a month, I sold my kit lens and got my self a 28-135 IS USM. After a month, sold that lens to get a 17-85 IS USM. After another month, sold the 2nd lens to purchase an 18-135 IS lens. And then after another month, sold that lens to get a Tokina 28-70 f/2.8. Think of all the money I wasted.

I started to read a lot of reviews concerning Canon's L series lenses and found this one (24-105L) to be a great general purpose lens for new hobbyists like myself. So I sold my Tokina and finally decided to (bite the bullet) purchase one yesterday. Oh boy! this lens just rocks! I love the following:

1. Picture Quality (colors are so much more defined)
2. Build Quality (it's built like a tank and is weather sealed)
3. Mid-range weight
4. Mid range zoom
5. IS and USM of course
6. The large hood (included)
7. The pouch (included)

To me, the only things I ranted about is the lack of additional f/stop (2.8) for low light conditions and the steep price.

So please learn from my experience, stop wasting your money on mid-level lenses if you plan to purchase an L lens someday. Just save up, practice on your kit lens and a 50mm prime f/1.8. If you've saved up enough, go and get this lens, or any particular L lens that you fancy. BUT, nothing, I mean nothing can match the versatility of the 24-105mm F/4L lens.

Canon, thank you for making this lens. =)

Strong, heavy and feels solid. Can take good portrait pictures with clean subjects. wide angle can get a little skewed, f/4 all the way to 105mm is an advantage. I am considering a larger f stop to go with this one, preferably at 50mm or so.

I use it with 40D and I like it.

The hood can cast a shadow on the pictures if not careful.

I have been using canon equipment for donkey years now and was just about to buy this lens when a very helpful staff in my usual photo shop told me about the problem with the diaphragm. It very often gets stuck, but not within the first year of use, sometimes in the second or after the second year of use (when you have no more warranty).I then went to the repair centre and spoke to the head engineer and he confirmed the problem. What do you do when this happens? YOu need to get a new diaphragm - usually out of your own pocket. Canon has apparently addressed the problem and came up with a new diaphragm, but the engineer said it was only better than the old, but still not perfect. Apparently these 'new diaphragm cameras' are mixed in with the old ones and so there is no way of knowing what you buy. the dealers don't know either which is which. Now, this put a big damper on this lens. No matter how good it is when it works, it is only as good as its weakest link. shame on Canon! I just had a problem with my 5D mirror. In the hot desert of India, it just fell off.... the nearest repair centre was a night's train ride away once you got to a train. IF this happens with the lens, I don't want to think about the consequences. Does Canon think one should carry around 2 of them, so one has a backup lens? Very disappointing.

I bought this lens as my first "upgrade lens" following the purchase of my Canon T1i. I researched for quite a while and rented a few lenses. I would have liked the 24-70 f/2.8 since it is a faster lens, but didn't want to give up the IS feature to do so. Also, the 24-105 is a bit shorter making it easier to walk around with. In the end, I'm happy with the lens at the price I paid for it.

Folks,

After much research and review reads, purchased the Pentax DA50-200mm F/4-5.6 ED WR Lens for use with Pentax K7 DSLR.

Both items were bought from Amazon, and the service, shipping and quality were excellent, as has always been my experience.

Now to the lens, lens is perfect for use along the Gulf coast in the high humidity, heat, rain environments. The lens is weather resistant, well constructed and sealed against the elements. Displays very high build quality overall and has excellent optics.

This is a good lens for the K-7. Focus is good and fast enough for me. I have had the lens/camera for 4 days now and have taken 1300+ shots. Many of those were with this lens. I bought this lens earlier this month with the K7 kit through Amazon. I have used the lens several times already at my sons football games. The lens coupled with the K7 takes very sharp jpegs with good color. It focuses very fast too. I've got some excellent action shots with this lens. The lens is also very compact and light considering its zoom capability.

This is the kit lens that came with my 50D. At least half of the first 2,000 photos I took with this camera were with this lens. Many reviews are listed here, so before buying I would recommend looking at a variety of these reviews to see if this is the right lens for your needs. For me, the lens worked pretty darn good under most conditions, but it's by no means the best nor is it a perfect fit for every user. Let me explain why.

The Canon 50D is my first digital SLR - I just migrated from a set of 3 film Minolta bodies with several high-end, mostly prime lenses. I've never really liked the picture quality of point & shoot cameras, so the 50D + 28-135mm lens seemed like a good, affordable fit for me. Since I do mostly weddings and portraits, I knew a good portrait lens was a must so at the same time I bought Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Medium Telephoto Lens for Canon SLR Cameras, another well-priced lens.

Within a week we were off for a month in Vietnam and Korea. Been to both before but this time wanted to photograph a lot of memories. The 28-135 is very lightweight and convenient (as is the EF 85mm), so weight or size were never an issue. The Image Stabilization (IS) is nice to have. The 28-135 body is plastic, so the feel is a little chinsy but the image quality wasn't bad. But 'not bad' and 'outstanding' are not the same.

Keep in mind that the 28-135 has a variable aperture, ranging from f/3.5 to f/5.6. If you're ever planning on advancing beyond the symbol icons on the mode dial, venturing into aperture-priority (Av), shutter-prioity (Tv), or other modes, then you're going to need a larger aperture, at least f/2.8 or faster. If you want to use zoom lenses, having a constant, fixed aperture is going to make your life easier and your photos look much better.

It quickly became evident that this lens is what it is. It's an inexpensive kit lens. Does it blow away point & shoots? You bet! Can it take beautiful shots? Of course! But my experience is that stellar shots are more of the exception than the rule with this lens.

Remember that a large part of successful photography is technique. Just having a nice camera or expensive lens doesn't necessarily qualify you to work for National Geographic. The flip side is, if you want pics that are going to knock 'em dead, you have to start with good equipment. If you're going to stick with inexpensive lenses, you're going to have to work much harder (and take a lot more photos) to get the money shots. With good technique and with the help of a few other factors (good composition, appropriate lighting, a tripod, a good model or a beautiful scene, the right weather, plain luck, etc.), it IS possible to get great shots.

However, for many people, sooner or later the day will come when you realize that this lens can't keep up with your skills or photographic needs. For me it was about a week into vacation - about the point when I was familiar with my new camera, and I started to see the difference in the photos I was getting with this and the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 lens.

For the price, the package is excellent. This lens is one of the best values I have seen. There are days when you just want an easy, lightweight, 'everyday' lens that won't break the bank and wont break your back, and you don't have to worry about the lens getting damaged. For a lot of people, this lens will be a perfect fit for many reasons. And I will say it again, you CAN get awesome photos with this lens.

But for more advanced users, this lens will quickly become the limiting factor, the weak link in the chain. Go ahead and buy your camera with this kit lens, get acquainted, and have some fun. But put some money aside for an eventual replacement. Canon provides many options, depending on your specialty. For telephoto zooms, Canon offers a handful of different 70-200mm lenses. The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras sells for under $600 and is the least expensive L-series lens available. A little more expensive but a good high-end replacement for the 28-135 is Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM Standard Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras at around $1300. For wide-angle enthusiasts, try Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens or its cheaper cousin Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras.

You can see the direction I'm going. If you want to move beyond the amateur level and get more control of your images, if you want to use some of the robust features of your camera and get more compliments on your photos, you're either going to need one or more prime lenses, or you'll have to go the route of Canon L lenses. Yes L lenses are expensive, but the color and crispness they bring to your photos is phenomenal. I started with one, then added another. And I still have my EF 85 f/1.8. I've got the tools I need to take the quality photos I want.

As for the 28-135, I can't complain. For the price, the value is phenomenal. It's gotten me some beautiful shots. It also left me with some slightly hazy shots at a wedding and more over-and under-exposed, off-color images than I care to remember. That's why for me, it's love-hate. But like most unsatisfying relationships, the time came when I had to move on. Goodbye 28-135. Been nice knowin' ya. Buh-bye.

Arguably the best Canon walk-around lens for the money if you're not buying "L" series gear. The USM system is fast and quiet, the full-time manual focus is very helpful when re-selecting a macro target, and the image stabilizer makes for better hand-held shots at slow shutter speeds. The physical construction has only one flaw: The lens is heavy, and much of the weight is concentrated in the front element, meaning that accidental telescoping will occur once the mechanism loosens up with use. That's a "when", not "if", so expect it to happen eventually.

That issue aside, it has very good image quality, offers as much zoom range as any hobby or pro-sumer photographer could reasonably demand in one lens assembly, and even produces usable macro shots down to around 1:3 magnification, and possibly 1:2 at long zoom lengths in good light. This is an EF lens, so the 1.6x crop factor on APS-C bodies (pretty much any Canon dSLR except for the 1Ds and 5D series) will limit the effective field of view at 45-216mm, even though the curvature and depth of field will still be 28-135mm equivalents. That's a little narrow on the low end, so the EF-S 15-85mm IS USM lens and EF-S 17-55 IS USM lens should definitely be considered by all APS-C owners before making the final purchase decision, but most shooters won't have any problems with this lens.

The lens has a 72mm filter adapter, so good-quality filters (particularly 72mm circular polarizers) will be fairly pricey. Buyers should budget around $50-75 for a decent circular polarizer and a UV filter/lens protector. Search "72mm filter" on Amazon to see a good selection.

Final note: Don't be fooled by Amazon's ongoing policy of deceptive list prices for SLR gear, which they would never charge and no sane person would ever pay. As I write, Amazon is showing a crossed-out $753.77 as the List Price for this lens, while the inflated MSRP on Canon's own US website is $479.99. Amazon's current "real" price of $359.99 is very competitive, but it is not a "52% savings". I'm disappointed that Amazon's marketing department has so little respect for their customers, but their customer service quality remains excellent, so buy with confidence -- just be sure you know your fair market value prices before clicking through.

I a using this lens on a Canon XSi, and it has yielded fantastic results. The image quality is astounding if properly handled. The auto-focus is very fast and accurate. The field of view is a bit narrow at 28mm though, which is really its only downfall. Its very attractive aesthetically too! Highly suggested.

I did not purchase this lens through Amazon. I cheated. I got it on eBay. I'm sorry. I was drinking. What was I thinking? Anyway, the lens was listed as BUY IT NOW . . . $240.00 (+ $10.00 S&H). Seller wrote that he got it as a kit lens, it was in "Pristine" condition, and he was dumping it to purchase a similar (but far more expensive) L-Series lens. I guess I could have purchased a USED - LIKE NEW for very little more through Amazon. By the way, the eBay prices for this and other Canon gear is usually over priced compared with Amazon.

Anyway, the lens I received was indistinguishable from a new lens. I was lucky.

This is such a nice all around lens. It focuses very quickly, accurately, and almost without any noise. It is sharp enough to make enlargements as large as my printer (Canon Pixma Pro9000 Mark II) can handle. And I mean sharp not only from edge to edge throughout the focal range but even with the lens wide open. I think it may sometimes be too sharp for portraits (unless the image is softened with a photo editor).

The image stabilizer really works. I'm old and a wee bit shaky, but I can shoot sharp pictures with this lens on maximum telephoto for 1/30 of a second. And I don't have to lean up against anything to do it.

Looking very carefully I can see no vignetting, but I use it only mounted on my Rebel XSi camera body. I wouldn't know if the lens has problems on the outer part of the image since all Rebel cameras have a cropped sensor. Maybe that was the problem for the previous owner: Maybe he has one of those expensive professional SLR's with a full size (35mm) sensor - and maybe he sees some vignetting or some other kind of imperfection on the edges or the corners. I'll never know (nor will I ever care).

Whatever. . . I am happy with this lens and I am happy with the price I paid for it. I think it is a really good buy even if purchased at the price that Amazon charges for NEW. It is hard to beat Amazon prices - maybe even risky.

I didn't buy this lens from Amazon but I do own it. It's a great telephoto lens and I've been really happy with the picture quality. My only gripe is that I wish it had a stabilizer. Even with that's only slightly dim, like that of a cloudy day for example, causes the photos to sometimes be blurred because the lens is long and heavy, so small movement can cause blurring. It isn't impossible to use without a tripod, though. It's an extremely good lens for the price, that's for sure. Overall I'm very satisfied with it!

I got it free with my new camera, but I wish I sold it and bought a 55-250mm with IS or a 18-200mm with IS. They are much more expensive, but I hate having to remove it to put on a 18-55mm IS lens for indoor or closer range things. I can't complain too much since it was free. It's just that to fit in my camera case well this must be attached and in most cases I need to remove it and grab my other lens to take a picture. Not a bad lens, but you may get annoyed when you want to switch back and forth like me. Don't let this review deter you from buying it, I just had to put my two cents in.
